Question What am I doing wrong with Speedball C-series nibs?

Currently I am doing blackletter calligraphy using Pilot Parallel pens. I was tired of relying on ink cartridges, so I bought a set of C-series nibs from Speedball to use with the inks I use for copperplate. I think I cleaned them well, I used soap, hot water, a sponge, and finished with rubbing alcohol.

The ink appears to wet the nib evenly, but when I first press down on the paper (watercolor paper, which worked very well with my copperplate work), the ink flows out so fast that basically all of it is exhausted just on the first line that I make. I've tried with both Pelikan 4001 and Rorher & Klingner Salix, and the same thing happens to both.

What could be happening here?

Hi all,

Hope you don’t mind my sharing very early experimentation. I’m trying to conform to classic Copperplate. The last sheet was a mix of “freehand”.

Until this point I’ve been writing with fountain pen more in the style of “Practical business writing” by GC Grenne.

I need to work on spacing and consistency. Just ordered an Ames letting guide to help setup quicker. Image No2 is with a 3:2:3 ratio and I think I’m going to switch to a 1:1 at 5mm and see if that’s more comfortable.

Oblique nib holder, the basic cheap one off eBay.

Thanks for taking a look!
Cheers.

My first time creating a fully flourished piece like this! It took me almost an hour to figure out how to make the flourishes flow together naturally without looking awkward. I still have a lot to improve, but I’m happy with how it turned out! ✍️

Written in 35 seconds. By Charles W. Ransom. (Source: Penman's Art Journal, Nov 1895.) Portrait and ad are from circa 1910. Ransom was President of the Ransomerian School of Penmanship, in Kansas City, Missouri.

Critique 加油 (jiāyóu)

加 (jiā): to add; plus; to increase; to augment
油 (yóu): oil; fat; grease; petroleum; to apply oil, paint or varnish; oily; greasy
。
加油 (jiāyóu) translates to “add oil; to refuel; to accelerate; to make an extra effort; to cheer someone on”. The internet tells of a historical account tracing the origins of the phrase to Tsinghua School (now Tsinghua University) in the 1920s, evolving from cafeteria slang where students originally used it to ask for more sesame oil on their vegetables or pickles. Other theories attribute the phrase‘s roots elsewhere, such as a Qing Dynasty official adding lamp oil for late-night scholars, or as a 1960s Macau Grand Prix racing metaphor for stepping on the gas. Whatever the origin, you’ll likely hear it often from Mandarin and Cantonese speakers, encouraging and supporting you to keep going. 加油!
