What are we all putting for our OOO message (if any) while on strike?

Sorry just need to complain about something not RTO related. Does anyone have a coworker who expects everyone to handhold them through every customer interaction? I have a coworker who does this exact thing and this person has worked at my place of employment for close to twoish years now. It’s extremely frustrating and they always directly chat me on the side acting as if I am some magic right ball ready to give answers. We have a chain of communication and calendar, but this person can barely understand how this even works. Does anyone have any tips? I know I should talk to my manager but honestly not sure if that would even help given that this individual does not understand anything even if I tell them how to do something eleven different times….i know im not a genius, but i want to scream sometimes working with this person

I'm still trying to figure out the entire state hiring process, which has NOT been much fun! I've learned quite a bit from reading through previous posts here, and I truly appreciate everyone who takes the time to share their experiences and advice.
I passed the Analyst II exam, and now I'm ready to start applying for positions. Before I do, I have a few questions I'm hoping some of you can help with:
I'm coming from the private sector, so this entire process is very new to me. I'm trying to learn as much as I can and avoid making mistakes that could hurt my chances of getting an interview.
Any advice, tips, or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Just got a call from some "scam likely" number (279-399-3907) and it was someone who claimed to be from SEIU. He asked me if i was going to strike tomorrow but i thought it was a little weird. It didn't seem like someone from the union as their voice was pretty flat and it sounded more investigative in nature like "hey r u planning to strike tomorrow". I felt like it was someone from management trying to call around and see which employees are planning to strike tomorrow or not so they can make note of it or something.
Anyone else get a random call from SEIU or am i overthinking this? lol

Just as the title says. My one year probation ends on 10/30. However, I am still technically on probation tomorrow and I'm not sure if being marked as AWOL would hurt my permanency and cannot take that risk. However, I also know how important the strike is. I just wanted to get your thoughts since I'm not allowed to seek advice from management regarding the strike. My previous performance reviews have been really good (either meeting or exceeding performances), if that helps.
Also, if management allows it, would taking time off be allowed, or is CalHR going to rain hell if time off was approved?
Thank you.

So my coworker sent me a link to the purchasing power website and after signing up, you need a member id to unlock your purchasing power. She called Purchasing Power's customer service line and was told that it's your employee id number but that doesn't work! Does anyone know what member id you need to enter and/or where you get the member id number from? Thank you in advance besties 😀

Has anyone else been in this situation and know what the best way to go about it is? 😅 my new supervisor has been at the state for 20+ years and now he’s a supervisor for a completely different department (in which he has no experience in) but he refuses to be taught. He refuses to let me do my job in the way that I’ve been doing it for 5 years, he completely changes the way things have been done, and a couple weeks ago while I was out on vacation he messed up so badly and when I came back and tried to correct it he refused to acknowledge that he messed up! We work in enforcement so if there is a mess up it could potentially have legal consequences. Yet, this supervisor refuses my offers to have a quick chat about certain things or let me teach him so I have no idea what to do. It’s getting to the point where I am just making up conclusions in my head 😂 is he sexist? Does he not trust me because he’s worked for 20+ years and me only 5 years? 🙄 I have no clue but welcome any advice 😂🙏🏽

This is mostly directed at Local 1000 members.
Stop telling your supervisors that you’re gonna be out. This strike is an unfair labor practice and you’re legally protected by the law. This has been said dozens of times. Also stop trying to post PTO too. The point is to walk off and not take any pay.
I’d argue that many of us don’t want to do this, but our hand has been forced.
Fuck your boss, fuck CalHR, fuck Gavin Newsom. Walk off the job and join the picket line. Don’t be a fucking scab.
The state could bargain in good faith, rescind that stupid EO and maybe this wouldn’t have happened. But here we are!

Are you guys making an out of office email for strike? Or blocking off your calendar?

Hello all,
I recently was offered an ITS 1 interview for IT purchasing.
Any ideas what the interview questions may consist of?
Examples would be great. I am extremely nervous as this would be a highly competitive interview so I want to prepare as much as possible.

Curious if the union put out any templates/ suggestions for members who will be participating in the strike tomorrow to use as our out of office message. Last I heard the suggestion was being considered but I haven’t seen anything in the communication that’s been coming out.

I’m prepared to join the strike tomorrow, but I’d like to confirm that I’d be safe to do so. My classification is student assistant, so I’m unable to join SEIU 1000 as a member.
Are there any other student assistants planning to strike?

Email received from my supervisor on 10/19/2026.
“I have some further language on your strike leave request. Please see below:
Unplanned Absence - SEIU
The Department has received information that on October 21, 2026, employees may be engaging in a job action in the form of a strike. It is the State’s position that a job action is not protected activity and is considered a violation of SEIU’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Section 5.1 (No Strike), which states clearly that neither the Union, nor its agents, nor any employee, for any reason, will authorize, institute, aid, condone, or engage in a work slowdown, work stoppage, strike, or any other interference with the work and statutory functions or obligations of the State.
Although the MOU has expired, the clause and the MOU continues to exist pursuant to the provisions of the Government Code Section 3517.8.
As it is believed there is a job action occurring, your request for leave is denied and you are required to report to the office and perform your duties. Failure to report may result in your absence being recorded as absent without leave consistent with your work week group, and you will not be allowed to utilize leave to cover your absence...”
Are we reporting this language to the union?
****
TO BE CLEAR - I did not request leave; just notified my supervisor as a courtesy that I would be OOO for the strike. this was language I received for Caltrans.

Are people putting that they are on strike for an out of office reply or not doing anything?

Hi everyone,
Does anyone know what position you can transition into after being an accounting officer for a year.
From my knowledge, it is either AAA or Senior AO.
Would 1 year as an AO qualify you to move into an associate tax auditor position?

My coworker is not part of the union and wants to participate in the strike with me. Does she need to let her supervisor know or how would that work?

I am proud to be striking as a lot of my fellow unit members are not. I have a good set up and good bosses so I let them know I will be out. I don’t know why I feel guilty. I know I shouldn’t. I am proud to be striking!

Does anyone have info if there will be any picketing in YOLO County? Davis or Woodland? I’d like to join and support. Thank you!

If a California state department signs a federal contract and doesn't follow one of its required clauses what happens? Who enforces it, the federal agency or the state?
Contract value in millions:)

Why is there nothing on the local news about the upcoming strike? Before the other recent strikes (grocery workers, bart workers, teachers unions) it was all over the news. But in the state capital I've seen nothing about the state workers' upcoming strike or even that we haven't had a contact since July 1

It has been communicated by the executive staff via management that there is a mandatory department-wide RTO for tomorrow, the day of the planned SEIU strike. Why would ANY department intentionally, deliberately, and publicly oppose their workforce wanting raises and fair working conditions? Are any other departments taking this type of executive action?

Whether they are genuinely uninformed or actively trying to mislead you, managers should not be advising staff to take leave of any kind. No sick, no vacation, no LA. This is not just about sacrificing a day of pay for a cause. This is about showing through actual, tangible attendence records, how much of an impact we are capable of making if pushed.
I am not a conspiracy person generally, but I am positive that when this is over, there will be some behind-the-scenes calculations of how many AWOLs got tallied. Those numbers may play a part when trying to convince the State to come back to the table. It's a numbers game, and anyone taking leave will not be counted in those AWOL impact figures.

I just wish that State workers could have more and longer strikes to put pressure on the CalHR and especially Newsom. Call in more sick A LOT and spread them out. No Kings! Down with Newsom! You still have a couple of months left, do your job Newsom.
