pure aussie Topicle, the Australian alternative to Reddit I posted about here in May, now has iOS and Android apps
Back in May I posted here about Topicle, an Australian alternative to Reddit I'm building in Melbourne. A lot of you signed up and the feedback in that thread got a bunch of bugs fixed, so thanks. The most requested thing by far was an app, and u/TheSplash-Down_Tiki and u/merriman99 both said to post again when it was ready, so here it is.
Topicle now has native apps for iOS and Android:
- iPhone and iPad: App Store
- Android: Google Play, or a de-Googled APK for phones without Google services
You can browse, post, comment, vote, DM people and run your own communities from your phone. Also:
- Push notifications for replies and messages (opt-in)
- Posts and comments in other languages get translated automatically, tap to see the original
- Dark and light themes, larger text sizes, and tablet layouts
- No third-party analytics, ad or tracking SDKs. Crash reports go to my own server in Melbourne.
A few other things people asked for last time have been added too: profile avatars, Sign in with Apple and Australian English spellings.
Still self-funded with no VC money, and still built and hosted in Melbourne. Mod actions are logged publicly and can be appealed, there's no algorithmic feed, and country flags show next to every post and comment.
NSFW is now supported on the website and the Android app. A few people asked about this last time, partly for the obvious reasons and partly for things like medical and advice communities. It's opt-in and 18+ only.
Separately, Australia's under-16 social media law means Australian accounts get an age check. For most people VerifyMy does it from your email address in the background. On iPhone you can also choose to share an age bracket through Apple, which doesn't share your birthday. If those can't confirm it, VerifyMy offers a face scan, or you can ask for a person to review it instead. You never have to do a face scan or upload ID.
There are communities for Australia, Melbourne, Sydney and the AFL, and you can start your own. It's still a small site, so if you install it, posting something or jumping into a discussion helps a lot.
If anyone has questions, happy to answer, and if something's broken let me know.
