Meta New Rule: Budget Must Be Chosen

Hey all,

Thank you all for continue flagging over-budget decks. We’ve done two things that should help make this easier going forward:

• There is an “Over $100” flair. This is intentional. If someone chooses this, the post will be automatically removed. The hope here is to teach people this is budget brews under $100.

• The flair “Deck Help” has been removed. This will force players to choose a dollar tier for the deck, and should help where people try to submit decks which are over-budget by classifying it under a non-dollar flair.

We have had discussions over the years whether we want to allow more expensive decks, but time and time again the community has said no. So until we decide otherwise, these steps should help to protect our community with under $100 budget decks.

Meta New Rule: No Promoting or Advertising

I, like many of you I imagine, am tired of seeing posts with half-baked apps and websites for Magic stuff. So I’ve decided to make a new rule that I think will go over well with you all: No promoting or advertising of apps or websites unless staff decides to make a prior exception. If someone violates this rule, they will be instantly banned. And if you made one of these things and want to share it, do not bother asking us for approval, because I’m done granting it for very meh apps and websites. If we want you to showcase it, we’ll let you know. (Manatithe as the lone exception comes to mind.)

Note that a deck being shared and just mentions it was built using a tool is fine. But the “I built this app” or “this Magic website is great for the following five reasons” will result in a ban.

Please, keep flagging problematic posts, and we will deal with them! Thank you all.

$100 Brew Looking to de-Snail my deck.

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I, like I'm sure many others did as well, hopped on the bandwagon when Salubrious Snail made a video about his Radha deck. I used it as inspiration for my [[Susan Foreman]] and [[The Tenth Doctor]] deck.

For anybody unfamiliar with the video, the idea is to play a 2-cost mana dork commander on turn 2, followed by a 4-cost ramp spell on turn 3. This gives you 6-7 mana to spend on bombs on turn 4 onward.

I've had a lot of fun with it, but I wonder if there's something else that I can do with this concept. I've found that I enjoy taking game actions. This deck, however, only allows for one per turn. Maybe lowering the curve to allow double-spelling earlier and/or focusing on more exile synergies.

Which brings me to my question: has anyone built this style of deck without focusing on 6-7 cost cards?

Hey everyone, i'm looking to make a budget (€75,- according to moxfield) 'cedh' deck for Dihada to play with my friends mostly. ofc everything is on the table with the only limitation being budget. I've made a decklist after looking at some other decks online hoping to understand the Dihada stuff that is possible. i do however have no real experience with cedh, so i'd love to get some advice on the deck overall and things to consider going forward. this is probaly not the final decklist but i'd love to get any input at all so everything is welcome. (i've tried to assemble a primer mostly copied to give some insights aswell)

$50 Brew $35 Budget deck upgrade help!

Hi everyone! Me and a couple if buddy's of mine decided we would all make $35 max budget decks just to really have fun since a lot of power creep has been happening at our lgs. I decided I was gonna throw together [[Mm'menon, the Right Hand]] deck because she is by far one of my favorite looking arts from all of EoE, and I feel like she deserved it.

She kinda turned into a toolbox commander (more like a junk drawer), and I would love people's help to really fine tune her into an absolute beast!

Thank yall in advance!! :3 ~~ The deck :3

$100 Brew Mono Red Budget Deck - Open to suggestions

I have a friend who recently built a resilient mono white blink deck for around $75. I've been thinking about building a mono coloured deck for a while now, and I am taking this as a sign of inspiration to get it started!

I'd like to go budget friendly (like my friend), and also since my other decks have all been a bit more expensive. I am leaning towards choosing red simply out of curiosity. I've had lots of exposure to green and black, and something about mono blue just doesn't seem fun to me yet.

I have yet to settle on a commander, so I am also open to suggestions. After some brief looking, I think I want to make a deck that centres around playing cards from exile, or maybe making copies/copying spells. I don't want to have a game plan to heavily reliant on the commander, and something that is flexible would be fun.

Above all, just hoping to hear some fun thoughts about mono red, any specific commanders that left you with a story to tell, and of course any deck building suggestions on a budget.

$50 Brew Looking for some deck suggestions (3+ colours)

Over the last few weeks I’ve been posting a bunch of decks and have gotten comments and messages with some great suggestions. Extremely happy with how the decks play, probably more so than I was before I switched to budget magic if I'm honest.

My goal at the beginning was to have a set of decks that I could use, but that could also be used as a contained, semi-balanced set of duel decks when we have beer and pizza style game nights. I have some friends who will play mtg but have no interest in buying or collecting and I’ve done a similar thing in the past with pauper decks. It worked really well so I think this should too with some effort.

I was originally on the fence about completing the full 32 decks (my other set is only 16), but have been enjoying the journey so far, so thought why not? I’m just struggling to pick commanders for a few of the colour combinations. I want each deck to be fairly unique and follow a different strategy/archetype (so no repeating spellslinger, control, discard, burn etc. which I’ve already got represented). Here’s what I was thinking so far:

Bant – Voltron – [[Rafiq of the Many]]

Esper – Dungeons with [[Sefris of the Hidden Ways]]?

Grixis – First one I’m not sure about. Would [[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds]] work as a suspend commander?

Jund – Absolutely no idea. All I can think of is group slug with something like [[Winter, Misanthropic Guide]] or [[Yurlok of Scorch Thrash]] but would that be fun to play?

Naya – +1/+1 counters – [[Tifa, Martial Artist]]

Mardu – Treasures – [[Vihaan Goldwaker]]

Temur – Once again, no idea. I think Temur is probably my least favourite combo, it’s certainly the one I play the least. The only thing I could think of was something like energy, but I played someone’s precon once and wasn’t overly impressed by the mechanic (though that could have just been an issue with that deck).

Abzan – Toughness – [[Doran, the Siege Tower]] or [[Felothar the Steadfast]] maybe? Small rant though. I bought Doran I think a year or so ago and paid fifty cents Australian (that’s like 35c American). Apparently, he’s nearing $8 now.

Jeskai – Lifegain/Card Draw – [[The Archimandrite]]. I like the idea of gaining life, getting a bunch of cards, then that making my creatures bigger, which I use to get more life, etc.

Sultai – Poison Counters – [[Xavier Sal, Infested Captain]] – In my head I have this stupid plan involving Thallids, toxic/infect, and proliferation.

WUBR – Thopters – [[Breya, Etherium Shaper]]

UBRG – Cascade/Discover maybe with [[Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder]]?

BRGW – The only commander I have for this colour combo is [[Saskia the Unyielding]]. Would "encouraging" combat work? Lots of goad, [[Nettling Imp]], [[Thantis, the Warweaver]], maybe a few of those curses that give benefits when someone gets targeted? Once again, is that going to be fun to play?

RGWU – I have [[Aragorn, the Uniter]] and [[Avatar Aang]], I assume they’d be legendary tribal and bending respectively? I’m leaning toward Aragorn because I feel Aang would be a nightmare to get going. The other thought I had was a 4-colour blue deck with cards like [[Swirl the Mists]] to make all of Aragorn’s abilities trigger every time.

GWUB – Superfriends? – [[Atraxa, Praetor’s Voice]] I’ve never played superfriends before, but I kind of want to try it now with the new empower Jace mechanic and all those “Way of the” enchantments.

5 Colour – Five Colour Towns – [[The Wandering Minstrel]] – I was thinking about something that is a bit like a pauper gates deck, only with towns, and the Minstrel instead of [[Basilisk Gate]]

Really just looking for thoughts and suggestions at the moment to help me get started. Especially if someone’s already built a budget deck for one of these cards, I’d love to hear about things that have actually been played and how they went/what worked/what didn’t etc.

Whatever decks I settle on have to be able to be built on a tight budget. Under $50 (card kingdom prices) excluding the commander or basic lands. The majority of those cards under $1, with only a few slightly more expensive (certainly nothing that hits the $2 mark).

Decks so far:

| Ultima, Origin of Oblivion - Tron-esque | Abdel Adrian, Gorian’s Ward - Blink Weenies | Piper Wright, Public Reporter - Clue Affinity | Tinybones, Pocket Nuisance - Discard | Imodane, the Pyrohammer - Burn | Ghalta, Primal Hunger - Stompy | Hylda of the Icy Crown - Control | Lazav, Dimir Mastermind - Mill | Chainer, Nightmare Adept - Self-Discard/Madness | Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss - Dork Tribal | Garnet, Princess of Alexandria - Saga/Enchantress | Akawalli, the Seething Tower - Graveyard | Vito, Fanatic of Alcazotz - Aristocrats | Bruenor Battlehammer - Equipment | Balmor, Battlemage Captain - Spellslinger | Bonny Pall, Clearcutter - Lands/Landfall |

$50 Brew Hidetsugu and Kairi ~$60 Clone Build

Been in love with this commander for a while and just haven't felt like building them due to just, sort of, the nature of what this commander entails, but I bit the bullet and have a build that I'm quite satisfied with, I can ramp into H&K early, and have (I think) enough clone effects to keep going, but I'm still a little worried about the deck "running out of gas" early and sitting around with no clone creatures/spells with a single flying 5/4

$50 Brew Sydri, Galvanic Genius Assistance

Hello all, I have been trying to make this [[Sydri, Galvanic Genius]] list a little cheaper as it's over the approx. $50 budget I'm aiming for. It also feels like I'm simultaneously getting mana flooded and yet not having enough mana to use Sydri's abilities properly... Any suggestions are welcome.

I don't know how to get it in the title while still having a text box, so: https://moxfield.com/decks/_sBnYySIQ063Euj-fUWQOg

(For the purposes of this, I am keeping Counterspell and Path to Exile as I found them for $.30 a few weeks ago, as Moxfield doesn't have the regional pricing of where I live)

$100 Brew Meloku, casual budget combo? (terrible B4)

Post image
1 Upvotes

I need some help from people smarter than me...

Tl;dr: I need a non-turbo, non-landfall gameplan for Meloku until I draw my wincons

Full text:

So, I've been wanting to build a lower to the ground combo deck for a while, because it fascinates me. I got an old and stable playgroup so brackets and all that is pretty irrelevant (mentioning that because event though the deck would be B4 it's still pretty weak)

For now I've got my eyes on [[Meloku]], becuase he has some pretty cool lines that require 3 pieces each:

...

First one would be infinite turns using [[Time Warp]] and [[Mystic Sanctum]] with Meloku:

  1. Play Mystic Sanctum targeting Time Warp
  2. Cast Time warp
  3. Return Sanctum to your hand with Meloku and repeat next turn
  4. Deck yourself with Labman or something, idk

...

The second combo would be infinite Flyers with [[Retreat to Coralheim]] and [[Walking Atlas]] with Meloku:

  1. Put a land on the field using Walking Atlas
  2. Untap Walking Atlas with Retreat to Coralheim
  3. Return the land to your hand with Meloku and repeat infinitely
  4. Swing in with a million flying Illusions

...

While all this seems cool and all I simply have no idea what gameplay I would run up until this point. I'm thinking about utilizing the flyers with [[Coastal Piracy]] effects to draw into my wincons right now, while running some decent control. I'd prefer to avoid turbo because... it's just not what I'm looking for

Does anyone have any (non-landfall, because that would suck ass in mono U) gameplan suggestions for such a gameplan?

Thanks a lot in advance!

$100 Brew Mono Blue Vehicles/Combo advice wanted

Thumbnail
moxfield.com
2 Upvotes

So I’ve been tinkering with this list for a while, and I think it’s finally coalescing into something I’d want to actually build in paper. It started as simply mono blue vehicles, but as I dug into how blue taps for value, it has become more combo focused based on tap/untap synergies enabled by crewing the vehicles.

Here’s where I need help: I’ve never built or even really played a combo deck before. I’d like someone more experienced with this style of deck to let me know if I’m on the right track. And how do you determine the power level of a combo deck?

Main win conditions are enabling an infinite mana loop with [[Freed From The Real]] or [[Pemmin’s Aura]], then drawing through the deck with Unctus’ ability until I find a [[Lesser Masticore]] or similar that can turn that mana into a win. Backup wincon is to pump up my board with [[Steel Overseer]] or [[Iron Spider]] for an on-board threat.

$50 Brew Landsquall, Orzhov Voltron Landfall

Post image
35 Upvotes

Hey all, I'm back with a brew I'm pretty proud of; an Orzhov landfall deck that isn't straight jank. First of all, this commander is absolutely busted and you can do some really nasty locks with [[Accursed Marauder]] and friends, but what this deck wants to do is repeatedly bring back [[Fabled Passage]] or [[Evolving Wilds]] netting up to 4 landfall triggers per turn just from our commander alone.

Some fun things we get to do that usually kind of suck:

  • - Play a bunch of off-color landfall cards[[Ob Nixilis, the Fallen]], [[Dread Presence]], and [[Quest for the Necropolis]]
  • - We are pretty happy running [[Blitzball]] and [[Commander Sphere]]
  • - We feel fine running [[Quag Sickness]]

Evasion and protection is pretty important to prioritize so I have devoted a good chunk of the deck to it. Alseid of Life's Bounty and Benevolent Bodyguard are both 1-mana creatures that can sac to give literal protection which is really nice to reuse if we need to. As mentioned earlier the removal suite of Accursed Marauders can be pretty nasty, so nasty that I might consider powering that aspect down. Initial playtesting is running smooth but it may be nice to include more haste enablers and more ways to fill the yard. But enough rambling here is the list:

https://moxfield.com/decks/ErdmPThunkSobocCdtsO9A/preview

Let me know what you think!

P.S. I am also working on a higher-powered list for this same commander since I was inspired by some of the cool cards that he enables. That version leans more into artifact synergies and ditches the landfall but seems to be very strong. That will be public on my Moxfield once I make the finishing touches.

$100 Brew Kediss and Rograkh Tips

I want to make a voltron deck that sits high 3 with Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar and Rograkh, son of Rohgahh as the commanders. I want a sub theme of boss battles. So I want creatures that will take the focus of my pod. For example Alexios, Deimos of Kosmos along with my main commander Rograkh of course. I haven’t built a voltron deck before and am in need of tips on equipment to focus on and other creatures that would grab attention when they enter and are also Voltron type threats. Thanks!
