Travel & Tourism Question for foreigners who've been in Ilha Grande or want to visit Ilha Grande

I've been living in Ilha Grande the past two years. During this time, I've had the opportunity to meet a few tourists, and ended up helping them in some way or another. Today, for example, I helped a woman from England that had an issue with her phone (turns out there was no issue, but still), then helped her find the bus to Paraty, find where to catch the bus to Paraty and gave her some tips about "how to be a vegetarian in Brazil" and so on.

I've done similar things a few times now, but it's always by chance. If I happen to be at the same place as them (usually in one of the boats) and notice that they are foreigners (and sometimes seem lost). I really enjoy doing it and getting to meet people from around the world has been a fun little Sidequest in my life.

I was wondering if I should try to do this "officially". Something like an Instagram, where people can reach me if they want to come to the island and need some assistance/pointers. I could check their Airbnb before arrival (I fixed an Airbnb's toilet for someone once, for example, as the host would only be able to fix it in two days), give travel guidance (it can be tricky/confusing to get to Ilha Grande) and just in general someone visitors could turn to.

Now my question: if you already visited Ilha Grande, do you think something like this might have helped you? If you're planning to come, would this be something you're interested in? I'm not even sure I would charge for this, so if anyone has any comments/suggestions, I'm open to hear about it.

It's just an idea that came up today during the couple of hours I spent chatting with the lost tourist...

Travel & Tourism Driving from São Paulo to Itatiba in 2013

Here's a brief compilation of driving clips from our 2013 trip to Brazil. It starts in Zona Sul in São Paulo (Av. Faria Lima) and ends roughly in Itatiba, on the contryside.

I believe I recorded this with a Samsung Galaxy S, specifically the T-Mobile variant (Vibrant). It was shot in 720p at 30 frames per second.

There's no image stabilization in such an old smartphone, so the footage was pretty shaky. I had to stabilize in Kdenlive, but it's far from perfect. Pardon me shakes!

Hope you enjoy the drive :)

Travel & Tourism Solo travel to Jampa or another place in December?

I’m (32F) in Brazil for 3 weeks in December where I’ll visit Rio, Minas Gerais and maybe Sao Paulo for a weekend all to visit some friends. I have 5 days to spare and had originally planned to go to Joao Pessoa as I’ve never been and really wanted to visit some lovely beaches and relax.

• What do you recommend someone do or dine in Joao Pessoa?

• What is it like as a destination for solo travellers?

• Should I consider other places? If so, where and why?

A bit of info about me and what I’m looking for:

My goal is a relatively small and quiet city with an airport in the North East. I’m not interested in Pipa because I’d need to catch a bus. I already have enough travelling in my itinerary. I want to laze around on beautiful beaches and relax and eat good food mostly. Maybe dance some forro.

I speak intermediate Portuguese but it’s improving.

I’ve visited Rio, SP and Minas Gerais before.

I’m not interested in Salvador at the moment as I’ve been before and think it’s better to know someone there.

I’d like the destination to be budget friendly and solo traveller friendly. I don’t typically stay in hostels.

Politics Anyone else had trouble finding Lula or Bolsonaro accounts on Meta platforms?

Hey r/Brazil!

Quick question for you guys: following the court ruling about Meta's algorithm favoring Bolsonaro over Lula, did any of you experience issues looking for Lula's accounts on Meta platforms? Did you run into similar issues when searching for Bolsonaro family accounts?

I'd love to hear from people both inside Brazil and living abroad!

Travel & Tourism What are some "weird" foods in Sao Paulo?

Hi all,

I'm traveling to Brazil soon to Sao Paulo. I've been to Brazil multiple times and have tried many of the foods, especially the famous ones.

This time I want to explore and be brave. I want to hear wildest, weirdest, different foods you ever tasted in this region.

p.s: I don't mean to offend anyone by saying weird. Maybe "unique" would be a better word, keep in mind I love you all <3

News Whistleblower Exposes Meta, Bolsonaro, and Cerimedo Election Meddling Partnership

A whistleblower revealed that Brazil's far-right Bolsonaro family dynasty met with Meta to discuss US plans to interfere in Brazil's election, to prevent Lula from winning.

Lula's Facebook and Instagram accounts were censored a few days before the first round of the presidential election.

This had a huge impact on the election, because Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, which are all owned by Meta, are the most popular apps in Brazil, and are hugely influential all across Latin America. (Jair Bolsonaro's son Flávio was declared the winner of the first round of the vote, by a narrow margin.)

Meta later admitted that Lula's accounts had been restricted, but it claimed that this was supposedly due to a "technical error"...

The whistleblower who disclosed this is Nadia Beller, a Bolivian journalist who was almost killed by hitmen hired by Fernando Cerimedo, a far-right Argentine political operative who oversees election interference, bots, and disinformation campaigns.

Cerimedo is closely linked to the US government and has worked for pretty much every right-wing leader in Latin America. He was photographed with Donald Trump Jr. and members of the Bolsonaro family, and he received an award at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida a few months before he was arrested for the failed assassination attempt against Beller, his pregnant ex-girlfriend.

Travel & Tourism Walkable neighborhood to stay in Sao Paulo

What would be a great neighborhood for 3 month stay in Sao Paulo?

Want to be able to on everything on foot: restaurants, gyms, supermarkets and shops.

Last time I stayed near Republica which is nice during the day and super scary at night.

Budget wise I just want it to be reasonable. I def dont want to spend to stay in Itaim Bibi or Faria Lima. Looking for a calm place like Lapa more more walkable.

Thanks.

Travel & Tourism People from Regiao dos Lagos, Rio de Janeiro:

Hi guys, I’m Brazilian living in the US and recently became a Muslim.

I was wondering if someone here is aware of a Muslim community around Macaé/Rio das Ostras/Campos? I’m not sure where else I’d ask for it, but this community is very broad so here I am lol

I’m visiting my family next year and I was hoping I could go to the mosque and find halal meats, but I’m starting to think that’ll be a reach.

Thanks!

(Not really looking for opinions regarding my choice of religion, thank you!)

Events, Sports & Activities Botofogo or Vasco?

I have narrowed down who I am going to support in Brazil to these two teams. Need to be Rio based as that will be my location.

As a Celtic supporter, I want to be supporting a club that is left leaning, working class and a history of being good with minorities.

Which one of these clubs best fits my description?

Moving to & Living in Brazil Moving from France to Brasil - Advice needed

I am (M30) married to a Brazilian. Last week something terrible happened to us and we will move to Brazil for personal reasons.
We had in mind to move to Brasil at some point, but not in three weeks.

Now I am wondering what I should do professionally as I know barely anything about the Brazilian job market.

What I understand :
I can work for a Brazilian company
I can work remotely, whether for myself, as a consultant, or as fractional employee.

The pros :
I have a working visa, and admin already done.
I read Portuguese well, and qualify for a local professional certificate (ANBIMA).
I love Brasil and its people.
More cachaça de Jambu.

The cons:
I see the Job market as hard right now.
I speak Portuguese, but it's more like ok than pro.
I have no network in Brasil, and social capital is very important.
I stayed in São Paulo for six months and I didn't like it much.

What's my field:
I work with financial markets and investments. I worked for central banks and public pension funds in New York where I started my career. I am used to work for institutions having >$1B invested or HNW individuals with >$100M in assets. I specialized in irrational market behaviors and decision-making psychology. I develop robust investment frameworks, asset allocation, diversification, cost control, and decision-making during financial crises. I also work with institutional client acquisition and retention to drive AUM growth for asset managers.
I can works for Investment Banks, Asset Managers, Family Offices and I am open to suggestion, commodities are an important business in Brazil for exemple.

I don't want to turn this post into a political debate. I'm French, so I have no right to speak on Brazilian politics, and we already have enough on our plate back home.

Has anyone else been through this? I'd love to hear your personal experiences on getting started here as a foreigner.

I’m also genuinely interested in your thoughts on what the right philosophy and mindset should be when moving to Brazil.
