No one’s cooler than Pepper Ann!

Daria.

Just from the title alone. I didn't even need the line from the theme song.

What show were they talking about? Pepper Ann?

I’m old, I thought Daria, but I think she was in high school.

I'm old too, thought the same.

Just think, we’ll get our AARP cards soon and get those sweet discounts on 4:30pm dinners…

What a sick sad world we live in when dinner is that late. I need to be in bed by 6 and I need to eat 2 hours before I take my blood dinner medication.

I thought Daria from the title but I knew it was Pepper Ann from the tagline.

Yeah, I mean she's like one in a million

It's like the second line of the theme song.

I liked that show too

I like that we all immediately knew this was about Pepper Ann

A shame it's not available on Disney+ or anywhere on streaming

Someone's been uploading episodes to YouTube though, so there's that.

There has never been a more catchy theme song

I mean it's literally the lyric from the intro.

Sidenote though, this theme song goes way too hard for a Disney show.

So I know this is about Pepper Ann but As Told By Ginger was also (or perhaps even moreso?) Doug for lesbians

As Told By Ginger is where my mind went for sure

Someone once told me the pastry's much softer on your cake day, guy.

Happy cake day, homie

Like not to be weird about it but the relationship between Ginger and Courtney read as VERY gay to me and I don't remember anything like that from Pepper Ann

This has to be Pepper Ann right? Great show, I liked it a lot more than Doug

My old ass looked at this and went "ahhh yeah, Daria."

Same here. Went “Daria” out loud and everything.

I now have the Pepper Ann theme song running through my head. lol

Pepper Ann was definitely better than Doug by a long shot.

I liked it so much I once named a cat Pepper Ann.

"I finally meet someone who's good for me, and it's all this bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch...

I love Pepper Ann."

You know patty and Pepper would be besties

The difference was, that Pepper Ann was occasionally funny, and Doug was an instant channel change

The implication that there is a group for which Doug was a foundational part of their life confuses and concerns me.

Some of these comments speak about Doug like it was terrible. I'm too young to have grown up with it but is there something wrong with it that I don't know about?

The original Doug on Nickelodeon was great. Just a slice-of-life about a kind-of-dorky kid with an incredibly active imagination dealing with kid problems. It was occasionally a little zany but never over-the-top. It was relatable to a lot of us, probably because of its semi-autobiographical nature.

Then it went to Disney and promptly turned to shit. They changed everything just to change it. Roger (the bully) went from trailer trash to rich snob offscreen, thus destroying any sympathy for the character. Patti (Doug's sweetheart) went from looking 90s normal to looking like she drives her son's friends to soccer practice because she has a minivan. They ruined the simple-but-charming music (except Disney's intro was still pretty good, if not as iconic as the Nick one). They even turned the kids' hangout from a burger place to a French restaurant, because that's a place kids hang out unsupervised. Disney moved production across the country, lost a lot of writers and other staff (including Billy West, Doug and Roger's original voice actor), a lot of the remaining voice actors recorded their lines remotely and it showed, creator Jim Jinkins had way less to do with the Disney version... it just wasn't the same show.

It wasn't bad for what it was. It just wasn't on the Core Life Experience level this post seems to treat it as. It was saturday morning cartoon fodder.

So was Pepper Ann to be honest, but Doug's vibe was Standard Suburban Family, and Pepper Ann was Grunge for Kids, so I guess if you were a Pepper Stan of some kind, you'd look down on Doug for being lame.

I was on the Danger Mouse, Inspector Gadget, Black Adder pipeline (when I could con my way into staying up late enough to see it).

u/Quiet_Education5918 9h ago

Any pipeline that goes through Black Adder should set you up for life.

I was an X-Files kid myself. I'd stay up late and watch it with my mom.

u/thejokerofunfic 5h ago

I was gonna say, nothing strictly wrong with Doug but I don't think Doug was Doug for the straights or anyone else by the logic of the post

Loved that show as a kid

Doug sucks, Pepper Ann forever
