Hello all,
We have long since gotten a lot of requests asking for help on where to start with Bob's music on the sub from folks who are new to Dylan's music.
Seeing this as something we could all solve as a community, I created a post asking for feedback to make a master post about the different ways one could go about discovering Bob's music. And I want to once again thank the community for their outstanding feedback in the creation of this post.
I knew beforehand that there was no right answer, but this further illuminated how rich Bob’s music is and the multitude (pun fully intended) of ways you can go about seeking out his music.
So, what this post will attempt to do is take all of that community feedback and the moderator's thoughts on the issue to help guide prospective BobCats through Dylan's career.
This is not to say what is posted here is the definitive way to do it in any respect. To each their own. This is just meant to be a guide.
Here are the different ways to go about exploring Bob's music. From greatest hits, to playlists, to roadmaps, to chronological order, it's all here.
THE ESSENTIAL BOB DYLAN
If you want a smattering of Bob across many eras, "The Essential Bob Dylan" released in 2014 does a good job of covering songs through his 60 year career. Based on what songs you like there, it will allow you to jump in at whatever era you like the most.
THE OFFICIAL r/BOBDYLAN COMMUNITY STUDIO ALBUM PLAYLIST
Our Community Playlist is our sub’s attempt at a best of compilation. We allowed the community to vote for their favorite song in a poll off of each studio album. The two songs that received the most votes from each album were added to the playlist.
The moderators also added a couple of songs off the album, Side Tracks, that aren’t on the Bootleg Series or any studio album. Call it executive privilege.
We'd like to thank u/bbsez for organizing and recording the results from the majority of these polls in order to construct this playlist.
You can find the playlist here:
CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER
Here is a list of Dylan's studio records listed chronologically if you'd like to go that route. Many members of our community have said that this approach has worked for them.
THE BOOTLEG SERIES
Here is a listing of The Bootleg Series which many would consider essential records.
These contain outtakes, unreleased tracks, singles and live performances across the many facets of Dylan’s career. One could argue it is better to listen to these after you’re at least a little familiar with Dylan’s work.
*** indicates there is a special edition of this release available as well with more tracks than the standard edition.
THE OFFICIAL r/BOBDYLAN COMMUNITY BOOTLEG SERIES PLAYLIST
Our Bootleg Series Community Playlist is our sub’s attempt at a best of compilation for Bob Dylan's venerable Bootleg Series. The poll is currently ongoing. We allowed the community to vote for their favorite song in a poll off of each Bootleg Series. The polls are currently ongoing.
Due to the volume of songs on the Bootleg Series records we have had different criteria for election to the BS Series playlist (top 2 songs from each disc for each volume with the exception of BS Vol. 4 which only has 15 songs).
Find the playlist here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/66P3b9uwFGpJfOsUn4sAaB?si=rD6sXiZZTaWGkHQkyw37Ug
LIVE ALBUMS NOT INCLUDED IN BOOTLEG SERIES
*- Includes the Manchester performance which is The Bootleg Series Vol. 4, but also includes every live performance with The Band from that year.
** Includes all songs from The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 (all songs from BS Vol. 5 have been remixed), but there's a lot on this record that isn't included on BS Vol. 5.
FILMS
BOOKS WRITTEN BY BOB DYLAN
The roadmap includes each album, album highlights and covers every major Dylan release including the Bootleg Series.
Once again, the roadmap acts as a recommended guide. It is not meant to be an authoritative stance on Dylan or his music.

Here is the link to the roadmap to be viewed on its own page. The R/BobDylan Visual Roadmap

EDIT: ALL DONE, thanks u/Spare-Jellyfish4339
Early one morning the sun was shining
He was lying in bed
Wondering if she changed at all
If her hair was still red
And her folks they said their life together
Sure was gonna be rough
Never did like mamas homemade dress
Daddy's bank book wasn't big enough
And he was standing on the side of the road
Rain falling on his shoes
Heading out for the east coast
Lord knows he paid some dues
Tangled up in blue
He was married when he first met
Soon to be divorced
Got her out of a jam i guess but he used a little too much force
And they drove that car as far as they could
Abandoned it out west
Splitting up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best
He turned around to look at her
She was walking away
Saying over he shoulder we gotta meet again someday
On the avenue
Tangled up in blue
Way up in the frozen woods
Teardrops touch the sky
The leaves are falling one by one
And the moments passing by
Sometimes I get so tired
Sometimes im getting away
Lucky you found another
Tomorrows another day
And all the while I was alone
The past was close behind
Seen a lot of people but
She never escaped my mind
She just grew
Tangled up in blue
Things were gettin’ to cost too much
Love had slipped through my hand
Certain truths are dancing
I never did understand
You bury the hatchet
You put her to bed
Sometime you go for a ride
Nothing ever looks the same
After you've been on the other side
It turns around watch it disappear
Whatever i was looking at
He never did find it here
Neither did you
Tangled up in blue
She lit a burner on the stove
I prayed to the dust
You look like someone i used to know she said
Someone i used to trust
Then she opened up her book of poems
That she left to you
Memorize those lines she said
They glow like _______?
Every one of them words rang true
Glowed like burning coal
On and off of every page
Like it was written in my soul
From me to you
Tangled up in blue
So now im going on back again
I've gotta get to her some how
All the trees? are dead and gone
Tomorrow might as well be now
Some of them went on the mountaintops
Some of them down in the ground
Some of their names were written in flames
Some of them just left town
Me, im still on the road
Headed for another joint
Well we always felt the same
We just saw from a different point of view
Tangled up in blue

OCTOBER 17, 2001 - Two security guards were sacked after refusing to allow Bob Dylan into his own concert. Dylan who had demanded that security on his "Love and Theft" tour should be tighter than ever didn't have a pass when he arrived backstage at the Jackson County Exposition Center in Medford, Oregon.
It wasn't clear whether the security guards, all in their 30s, recognized Dylan.
But even if they knew who Dylan was, the guards had strict orders from Dylan's security director that no one was to get backstage without an official credential. "He said no exceptions," Borovansky said. "Absolutely none."
So when a slight, wild-haired man tried to walk through the checkpoint, the guards stopped him. Dylan was surprised, and a brief scene ensued. One of the guards put her hands up and gently stopped Dylan. After his security director came over, incensed, both he and Dylan demanded that the guards be thrown out. Borovansky complied, although he said, "We prefer the term 'relocated.'" But he said he later told the guards they did "a great job."

I'm starting a new listen through of Dylan's complete discography including bootlegs and rarities. However, I did the same thing about three years ago and these were my 10 favorite outtakes from that listen through. You can watch video of you want to see reasoning but here were ten I chose.
900 Miles from My Home
Mama You Been on My Mind
Abandoned Love
Tomorrow is a Long Time
Series of Dreams
She's Your Lover Now
Lay Down Your Weary Tune
I'm Not There
Farewell Angelina
I'll Keep it With Mine
I already know that Red River Shore or the Girl from Red River Shore, or whatever it's called will be on the next iteration as I have fallen in love with that track. And yes, Blind Willie I do like, and it just missed the cut.
What b-sides, outtakes, rarities etc. should I be listening out for this listen through that are on your top 10?

Many thanks to Graley Herren for helping me to appreciate the sexual innuendo in "Highlands". For full details, see his book Dreams and Dialogues in Dylan’s "Time Out of Mind."
Some six minutes into the song, Dylan's narrator stumbles into an empty cafe, leering at the waitress, with no idea what he wants. She looks at him dismissively and says "You probably want hard-boiled eggs," as in 'you have no huevos and you need to get some'. When he agrees and asks for them, she says nope, you won't find your manhood here. She also says "you picked the wrong time to come," suggesting premature ejaculation.
The waitress then demands that he perform as an artist, by drawing a picture, but the narrator protests that he can't do it, so she gives him a napkin and says "You can do it on that." In other words, he might as well masturbate if he can't perform.
The narrator then protests that he can't find his pencil, as in he has no balls and also no clue where to find his penis. Apparently, the waitress has been keeping it behind her ear so she hands it to him. Doing his best with the borrowed penis, the resulting performance is disappointing: "That don't look a thing like me."
The song reminds me of the sexual innuendo in "Ballad of a Thin Man," but now Mr. Jones is played by Bob Dylan. There are also a half dozen jokes in the song about how old the narrator his, and a few references to other Dylan tunes, like "Man in the Long Black Coat".

From Bob Dylan's Interview for 20/20 (1985) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjRNZaeRt88
“I want to figure out what’s happening. I did look into it. It didn’t necessarily make life easier, but it definitely made it clearer. Again, a lot of things, really—hard to say in a few words what I gained from it. But it’s always easier if you understand something than if you don’t. If you don’t understand something, you’re just tossed about. If there’s a storm coming up, it’s always much easier on you knowing that it’s only going to last a certain time.
Is there another world after this one? This is a testing ground. This is a place you have to work certain things out. You have to work out where your place is and who you are. But we’re all spirit—that’s all we have. Just walking, dressed up in a suit of skin. And that we’re going to leave that. You make of it what you make of it. Nothing’s forever—everything is temporary. You don’t leave any nice place behind. You just have to have some kind of focus on what you need and what people force you to need. It’s only your work you’re leaving behind.
At a certain time, all the people from history will stand up. I believe in the resurrection. There are certain things—certain knowledge—that I’m not sure is available right now on a mass level. It may be sometime, because some of it is a little extreme. It might go against what a lot of people already think. A lot of what’s happening today throughout the world operates under something like a spiritual religious order, but it’s actually happening more in terms of a financial empire. And this is from what I can see—it has nothing really to do with spirituality or the next world, or the soul—the trip that the soul’s on. I could go deeper, but I’m not sure how much of it I want to state right out and say, because I’m not sure how much of it applies here. Oh yeah, sure—I think this whole thing’s got to end. Well, there’s a messianic kingdom that would be coming in. When it comes in, some people say tomorrow—I don’t particularly think it’s going to be tomorrow, but I believe it’s going to happen.”

I find it interesting that people will call Bob Dylan the greatest songwriter of all time, but so much of the discussion outside his actual fanbase seems to focus on early acoustic songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Mr. Tambourine Man.” Those are great songs, but there is so much more to his discography.
He has such a large and diverse body of work, yet I feel like a lot of it doesn’t get talked about enough outside his fanbase. Of course, his electric trilogy gets plenty of recognition too, but even then, the conversation often seems to come back to a handful of songs like “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Just Like a Woman.”
I wonder how many people think they don’t like Dylan because they don’t connect with the early folk material they associate with him. If they listened to something like Nashville Skyline or The Basement Tapes, they might find a completely different side of him to connect with.
There are so many different phases of Dylan’s career that I really feel like there’s something for almost everybody. But unless you already have a reason to explore his catalog, a lot of those albums and songs can go under the radar.

Bob Dylan changed my life. He was my first concert, I learned guitar and harmonica to his songs, I was obsessed in high school to the point where people still associate me with him. I cannot stand “the next Dylan” comparisons. They’re basically always completely misguided and ridiculous, especially considering there’s like 50 different Dylan’s within his own discography! I don’t think anyone is the next Dylan, and I don’t think it’s declared for any other reason than to sell magazines and tickets. Now all that said, I posted this in the Cameron Winter forum and it recommended I post it here to, so I guess that’s what I’m doing?
When I was a sophomore in high school, 2000, I was in honors English and walking to class listening to Dylan's greatest hits volume 2 that my dad gave me, I was still pretty new to him. "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" came on and it stopped me in my tracks, and I just sat on some school steps (so my CD player wouldn't skip), gobsmacked by what I was hearing. When it ended I remember thinking "class has nothing to teach me" cause we were learning Chaucer's Canterbury's Tales or some shit, and I just left school and walked home. It was one of those Wizard of Oz black and white to color moments for me, you know?
I know I've had many of those since, but that one stands out, because I'd never heard anything like it before. Yesterday I was walking in Ralphs looking for cat food and Nina + Field of Cops from the live album came on and I had a similar moment/feeling. Just stopped dead in my tracks, staring at some friskies in a trance, blown away by what I was hearing. I love the album version, it’s one of my favorites and blew my mind when I first heard it. I’ve sung its praises many times here and to anyone that knows me- this one sounded next level, and just knowing how wild it is that the frontman for a band with a whole different sound managed to sell out Carnegie Hall after only a year of a solo piano shows for a strange sounding album, and get a film made and released by PT Anderson…it’s just fucking bonkers. And it isn't easy to let quiet notes linger like he does for some of the songs!
Anyway, just wanted to share that. What’s funny is I am such a massive fan, and I love his live stuff, but it can definitely feel a bit samey. I saw him at the Barnsdall Park theater like a month after heavy metal came out, and was so fucking excited, and I fell asleep during one of the songs cause it sounded too similar to others and the acoustics weren’t great.
So much of the magic comes from the arrangements and quirks, IMO- the song I fell asleep to was (maybe the debut?) of Long Island City Here I Come, which is one of my very favorite songs on Getting Killed, but hearing it solo piano at the time was just hard to hear the lyrics and felt monotonous.
But a year of touring nonstop has shown how much he’s leveled up- this is worlds away from that January 2025 show, and he was fantastic then.
Ok rant over.

The new Dylancentric MOJO has an eye-catching cover-mount CD, subtitled The Men and Women of Rolling Thunder. Its 15 tracks sample what some of the Thunderers got up to before and after their 1975/76 escapade. I’m particularly looking forward to tracks by Scarlet Rivera, Rob Stoner and T Bone Burnett.
I normally bin cover-mount CDs, but this one’s a keeper.

“Honest with Me” is a song from Love and Theft that I think gets overlooked even though it’s a cool, driving blues with great lyrics.
Here’s a live version from 2001, just a couple of months after the album’s release.
