I'm reading Berserk for the first time, and I just finished the Conviction Arc. Holy shit, what did I just read?
This arc was genuinely legendary. The storytelling, the atmosphere, the details, the worldbuilding… everything was so beautifully done. I especially loved following Guts on his journey to find Casca. After everything he's been through, seeing how desperately he searches for her and what he's willing to go through to reach her was incredible.
The whole Albion storyline was amazing too. The Tower of Conviction, the Inquisition, the torture chambers, the religious fanaticism, and the way everything slowly builds toward that horrifying climax… it was so dark and disturbing, but I couldn't stop reading.
I also really enjoyed the characters surrounding Luca, especially Nina and the other girls. Luca was such an interesting character, and I loved seeing the different ways people survive in such a cruel world. Even the smaller details made the whole place feel alive.
And that ending?! Griffith returning to the physical world was insane. Miura really knows how to make an arc feel like an entire journey while setting up something even bigger.
I do have two questions that confused me, though:
1. The child
Is the deformed child Guts and Casca's child? If so, how does Griffith's reincarnation connect to him? I remember the child looking like Griffith in some ways, and I'm confused about whether that means the child is actually Griffith's or if there's another explanation. I might have missed something.
2. Nina
Nina was clearly very sick and terrified for much of the arc, but by the end, she leaves with Joachim. Does that mean she's recovered, or is there more to her situation that I haven't understood?
Please keep the answers spoiler-free beyond the Conviction Arc! I'm experiencing Berserk for the first time, and I really want to discover the rest of the story naturally.
Overall, what an absolute masterpiece of an arc. I'm genuinely excited to see where the story goes next.

It perfectly shows how Griffith thinks about guts after the torture and blames guts for his own conditions WITHOUT using any dialogue and only using 1 page and 1 small act. It's the perfect example of show don't tell.

Griffith being mute forces the story to use these kind of techniques to show how characters feel instead of telling it with dialogue Which is a good storytelling technique it may even one of the reasons why miura choose to cut out Griffiths tongue

I was thinking wow this is the sharpest blind character ever! His senses are amazing. He could climb steep narrow mountains and sparred with Guts without eyesight. Amazing.

Anyway I still like him even knowing he is not blind 😂

I’ve been thinking about an interesting Berserk what-if scenario involving the duel between Guts and Griffith, right before Guts leaves the Band of the Hawk.

We all know how that confrontation ended, with Guts defeating Griffith and walking away. But what if, instead of leaving without explaining himself, Guts turned toward Griffith as he lay defeated on the ground and repeated the exact same words Griffith once used to describe what it means to be a true friend?

“In my mind a true friend never relies on another’s dream. The man, who would be my friend, must have his own reason for living, beyond me. And he should put his heart and soul into protecting his dream. He should never hesitate to defend it, even against me. For me to call a man my friend, he must be equal to me in all respects.”

Imagine Griffith hearing his own philosophy about friendship repeated back to him by the very person he desperately wanted to keep by his side.

How do you think Griffith would have reacted in that moment? Would hearing his own words from Guts have forced him to reconsider their relationship and recognize Guts as his equal? Or would it have made Griffith feel even more humiliated, betrayed, and determined to regain control?

More importantly, could this single conversation have changed the entire course of Berserk? Could it have prevented Griffith’s downward spiral and the events that followed, or was everything already inevitable at that point?

I’m also curious about how this would have affected the relationships between Guts, Griffith, Casca, and the rest of the Band of the Hawk.

Do you think Guts repeating Griffith’s own words back to him would have fundamentally changed their relationship and the direction of the story, or would things have ultimately played out the same way?

I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this scenario.

So when TheAllMightyLoli's Big Berserk Video was up , (it got taken down) there was this awesome clip of Guts killing demons in the Eclipse with this dialogue, Yesss...Rip them to pieces...TAKE YOUR REVENGE!! DESTROY THEM! MUTILATE! VENGEANCE! FINISH HIM.....Yessss...KILL THEM!.

And it ended with the beast of Darkness' eye. It was in the 1997 anime.
