Ugh... Norma reminds me of my sister all the time
A few episodes into Season 4, and I have to admit I love the show but I am finding it harder and harder to watch for several reasons, one of them being how I am seeing so many similarities to real-life people around me.
Norma is particularly unbearable to me, because she reminds me of my sister. Constantly expecting, demanding, constantly whinging when she isn't the center of attention or feels neglected, quickly resorting to yelling when she gets pushback, constantly manipulating people, a completely self-centered narcissist who likes to pretend to have something resembling empathy to get her way but turns stone-cold when it suits her agenda, quickly disappears when she gets what she needs / wants etc. ... Vera Farmiga even looks a lot like her and has the same vocal pitch.
There are scenes where I get so triggered I just suddenly am overwhelmed to the point I lose interest in the show and go to the kitchen and get myself a drink or something to snack, my wife has noticed the connection between Norma's behavior and my defense mechamisms because she sees the similarities, too.
I also always felt very connected to Dylan. A baseline empathic person, constantly trying to fix things, constantly trying to do right in an environment that's unsalvagable within his sphere of influence.
Guess I'm just glad we didn't have a Norman Bates in the family. I wonder if anybody else had similar issues watching the show, too close to home, quite literally?
