Is it just me, or do academic advisors actively try to set you up for burnout? (QCC to Baruch transfer rant)

I need to vent and get some outside perspective because I feel like I’m losing my mind dealing with academic bureaucracy.

Has anyone else ever felt like their academic advisor is completely disconnected from the reality of being a commuter student with a job and a life outside of school?

Here’s my situation: I’m at QCC trying to transfer to Baruch Zicklin. This past summer, I dealt with a personal loss and some heavy life stuff. Because of that, I had to withdraw from College Algebra. Mind you, this was a 5-week summer course that got compressed into 4 weeks. I was literally on the last day of the class when I had to withdraw, but I managed to finish Trigonometry with a C-.

Now, I’m trying to figure out my math requirement for Zicklin. I found out that MA-114 (a combined College Algebra & Trig course) transfers to Baruch as MTH 2000, which satisfies the Zicklin requirement and unlocks Statistics. It’s a single 4-credit class.

But my advisor is fighting me on it. She’s telling me I must take MA-119 (College Algebra) and Trigonometry as two separate classes during the 3-week Winter session because "that's what DegreeWorks says."

She literally suggested I take two math classes in three weeks. I live 40 minutes away from campus. She expects me to commute to school at 9 AM, leave at 2 PM, go home, and then come right back for a 4 PM class? For three weeks straight? That is a blatant recipe for burnout. And I’m paying out of pocket for this!

I already lost my summer to stress and a bad schedule. I am not sacrificing my winter break, my job, and my mental health just to satisfy a glitchy computer system because the advisor is too lazy to file a manual override or substitution form. MA-114 is literally designed to "hit two birds with one stone" and save time.

I’m so tired of advisors preaching about "time management" and "avoiding burnout," but the second you ask them for a workaround that actually fits your life, they just point at DegreeWorks and tell you there's no other option. It feels like academic violence, honestly.

What is your opinion on this? Have you ever dealt with an advisor who just reads off a computer screen instead of actually helping you? How did you bypass DegreeWorks and get your credits to count?

Switch major/withdraw?

I’m a third-year Baruch student majoring in Finance, but I’m getting tired of math and financial analysis year after year. I’m declaring to switch to Business Communication (Corporate Communication) at Weissman.
I’m currently taking FIN 3000, OPM 3000, and ACC 2203, and I’m planning to meet with BOSS soon.
Should I withdraw from my classes or wait until I meet with an adviser? I’d appreciate advice from anyone who has made a similar switch

second semester freshman schedule

i've already taken a look at the degreemaps and have a general idea of what i should take, but can anyone tell me what is the best classes to take as a second semester freshman majoring in communication studies (digital communications & culture)!! if any comms majors can leave their input that would be helpful! i'm relying on the degreemaps/degreeworks but i'd like to hear from people with experience, especially because i havent been able to book a peer advising session due to them being full. :(

my current classes are phi 1500, env 1003, env 1004, eng 2100, fys 1000, mth 1023 (not sure if im gonna pass... theres a reason im a comms major)

currently my general idea for next sem is eng 2150, his 1001, com 1010, mth 2009(unsure abt math reqs??) & maybe a spanish course (i have 2 college creds from hs for spanish, but i've been having trouble getting them accepted </3)

thank you!!

Confused about Big 4/Mid-tier recruiting timelines as a transfer student

Hi guys I'm an accounting major who just transferred to Baruch this fall, and I'm planning to graduate in May 2028. I'm honestly pretty confused about the recruiting timeline lol.

I noticed that a lot of Big 4 and mid-tier firms came to Baruch for recruiting events in Spring 2026, but I'm not sure what they were recruiting for. Were those mostly 2027 internships or full-time positions? And if I attend those events in Spring 2027, would I still have a chance?

I'm also curious about return offers. If you get one after a winter or summer internship, do you usually have to wait another year to start full-time, or can you start right after graduation?

I really want to have a full-time job lined up by the time I graduate, but since I'm a transfer student, I'm worried I might have missed some important recruiting opportunities.

I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences. Thanks so much!

I want to take marketing 3000 and mkt 3520 online but I think Baruch doesn’t have any options for that at the moment the closest thing is hybrid but if it’s possible I would like to take my chances at taking it at another school if it meant I can secure it online has anybody had success getting those courses online at other schools?

Academics If I drop classes now, do I get refunded the tuition?

The title is pretty self-explanatory. I’m having medical issues that have affected my ability to focus on class this entire semester, not to mention I’ve been in the emergency room multiple times. Can my medical situation help me get out of paying full tuition if I drop classes?

What office should I talk to for more clear answers?
