Is it realistic to find one babysitter for a 2-year-old and 6-month-old twins?

My husband and I have a 2-year-old boy and 6-month-old twins girls. We have our regular childcare figured out, but we’re hoping to find a babysitter who could watch the kids occasionally so we can have date nights or even just go out for a few hours.

We’re trying to figure out how realistic it is to find one person who would be comfortable watching all three kids by themselves. Our 2-year-old is a typical busy toddler who requires quite a bit of attention, and obviously, two 6-month-old babies need plenty of care, too. I know it’s a lot to manage, and I don’t want to put someone in a situation where they feel overwhelmed or out of their depth.

We’ve considered hiring two babysitters, but we’re not sure how to go about finding two people who would be comfortable working together. Would we just hire two random people who don’t know each other? That feels a little awkward, especially if neither person has worked with the other before.

For those of you who babysit, or parents who have been in a similar situation:

Would you feel comfortable watching these three kids alone, assuming you had the appropriate experience?

Would we be better off looking for two sitters?

If you recommend two sitters, how would you go about finding them? Would you hire one person and ask them to bring a second sitter, or look for a pair who already work together?

Is this something we could realistically find someone for, or should we expect it to be difficult?

We’re not looking for full-time childcare, just occasional help so we can get out of the house together! I’d love to hear honest opinions from babysitters and parents who have been in a similar situation.

Rant Babysitting

So there are these apps that out babysitters into contact with people who require a Babysitter for an evening or more routinely.

I babysit quite often through word of mouth and texts. I have over 30 families ill sit for. I thought I'd try these apps to see if I could get any more work, but nobody responds! What is the point of it 😂

If you're in brum and need a qualified Babysitter.... where do you get them from? Is there a place I'm missing?

Question Travel Babysitter

Hi everyone! I’d love to hear from those of you who have brought your babysitter or nanny on vacation with you! 😊

We’re planning a 12 day trip and are considering bringing a babysitter along. We would obviously cover her airfare and lodging, but I’m curious how you’ve handled the payment side once you arrive.

If you only need help a few hours a day or want to have a date night every few days, do you pay her regular hourly rate for the hours she works, offer a daily rate, or do something different?

I’m also curious what you typically offer for food, activities, and spending money while you’re there. Do you provide a daily stipend, cover all meals and activities, or give her a set amount for the trip?

I want to make sure it’s a fair and generous arrangement while also being realistic about how much help we’ll actually need. I’d love to hear what has worked well for your families, including any tips or things you wish you’d thought about beforehand!

Thanks so much! ❤️

Rant AITA/AIO while babysitting my niece?

My beautiful baby niece was born, and for about 7 or so months her mother (my sister) was enemployed. She got a job and I've been watching her for 5 months (since she just turned 1!)

I want to ask for a break from watching her, but with how everyone's schedules are, it feels bothersome for them. But honestly, I feel sort of overwhelmed and tired of everything going on, and putting a baby in my lap isn't helping. (Don't get me wrong I LOVE my niece more than anything in the world.)

Let me clarify something:

My sister is not mean in the slightest. She's very kind and has a silly personality. It's just that she gets very easily overwhelmed/overstimulated, and cries at least once a week about something, and having that sort of energy around makes your own problems feel like a bother to add in. Especially when it comes to the baby. It feels like I can't say "I need a break from watching her", cause it's almost disrespectful? Like I don't have the right to want a break considering her own mother doesn't get a break.

Here is a list of my issues:

  1. She used to get dropped off at 7 and get picked up at 2:50 by her dad, but he started picking her up later and later, and the regular time turned into 3:30. He doesn't show up in his uniform from getting off work anymore, he now shows up in his normal clothes, and tells me he took a nap. Yesterday, he picked her up around 4:17.

  2. I get paid 10 dollars for one day, for watching her 7+ hours. I watch her 2 days a week, and 3 days every other week. The babies grandma from her other side watches her the rest of the week. But she gets paid more by my sisters fiance (her son)??

  3. I want to get back into school. I'm not enrolled I guess? I've expressed that I want to be, but my mother keeps pushing back the date of getting enrolled and forgetting to help me/arguing with me. I think my mom wants me with the baby instead of pursuing school and I HATE that.

  4. My brother is the only other person athome, and he hates me and I hate him, but I have to suck it up around the baby so theres not tension around her, even though, trust me, I have reason to HATE him, and don't even want to speak to him.

  5. I have chores I need to get done around the house, everyone is at work and I'm sitting at home ALL day, but the days that I watch her exhaust me a lot. I forget to eat while I'm watching her, and I get so tired by the end of it that I feel like I'm not able to do anything else, even things I used to enjoy doing.

  6. Her grandma who watches her on the days I don't takes a lot of sick days, or even just says "I'm too tired to watch her", and my sister is REALLY bad at planning, she I just wake up one day with a baby on my chest saying "hellooo", and my sister leaving for work saying "sorry, sorry, I forgot to tell you she canceled", and it just feels really short notice.

  7. I have 1 online friend who ik irl, and don't always get to hangout at the times they want to cause I'm either watching the baby or just got done watching her and have no energy left.

All of these things could come off rude or like I'm complaining too much, so I don't even know how to bring them up or if I should. I want to just do everything I can for my sister, since I love her, and want to keep playing with my niece, but I'm so tired.

Also for age references, I'm 17, sister is 24, her fiance is 24, and her grandma from the other side of her family is in the low 40s

Feedback appreciated!

Question How do I professionally set boundaries with a babysitting client who cancels last minute?

So I babysit two girls (6 and 8 years old). My rate is $15/hr for both girls or $10/hr for one(I’m not advocating for unfair wages, I’m just PERSONALLY okay with that rate since I’m still getting some financial support from my family), and I’ve been having some frustrations with their mom.

She recently became widowed, so I’ve been trying to be as flexible and understanding as possible. However, I’m also trying to be mindful of my own time. There have been times when she’s asked me to babysit and then canceled, but fortunately, most of those cancellations have been within 24 hours.
Last night, I agreed to watch one of the girls because she was sick. I had watched them the day before, and she definitely seemed sick and complained about not feeling well, but she was still acting like her usual self, playing around and getting up without any problems.

Her mom told me she wasn’t entirely sure whether she would need me yet, but asked me to be at her house at 7:20 AM. I woke up and got ready, only for her to text me at 6:55 AM saying she wouldn’t need me to watch the girls after all.

At this point, I was frustrated. I completely understand that sickness is unpredictable, and if her daughter was sick enough to need someone to watch her, I would need to be awake and ready to come in. However, I had just lost out on money I was counting on, and I was up early for no reason. I also take Adderall, so once I’m awake, I’m awake. I can’t just go back to sleep and get those hours back.
Luckily, she ended up changing her mind, so I was still able to watch the little girl. However, this situation made me realize that I need to figure out how to handle last minute cancellations moving forward.

For some context, I’m in college, and babysitting is my source of spending money. My mom covers my rent, so I’m not relying on this money to keep a roof over my head, but I do use it for gas, groceries, and other personal necessities. I can’t always afford to lose out on money I was expecting to make, especially when I’ve already set aside that time to work.

How can I bring this up to her professionally without coming across as insensitive to her situation? I want to be understanding of what she’s going through, but I also need to be mindful of my own time and finances. I’m not sure what would be a reasonable boundary to set in this situation.

What do you charge for two kids & what kind of tasks are you doing?

Hi all! I have been working as a nanny/babysitter for the past seven years in the LA area. I have worked for a family friend for the past 3 years, they now have a 3 year old and a 1 year old. It started to be casual date night babysitting, but their full time nanny has quit and they are asking me for more hours (not a complete nanny role), just to be there when they need, a handful of times a week. I am an online student so my schedule is pretty flexible but I do have other families. My time there usually looks like: picking up the three year old from school, taking him to the park, playing, making both the baby + toddler dinner, give both baths, and do bed time. Sometimes I have them in the morning too, running them both around to appointments and then school. I guess the only things I do not do are the families dishes and laundry... I am wondering what you are charging for one kid and what you are charging for two? Thanks for your help in advance:)

Is this a fair payment?

I was working at a daycare where I had to look after 16 children with a wide range of behaviors. Some of them were extremely difficult to manage. I thought I had been hired, but the owner told me that she wouldn’t need my services for now and that she might call me occasionally next month, although I’m not sure if she really will.

Since I really need a job, I found this opportunity to take care of a 1-year-and-5-month-old child for R$1,600 a month. I would also have to clean part of the house and iron clothes. The working hours would be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a two-hour break.

Do you think this is a fair job offer or not?

Babysitting app problems

Has anyone had issues with Bambino booking requests?

I’m a babysitter using Bambino, and I’ve had repeated booking requests from the same parent account despite declining them multiple times.

I reported the issue to support, and they told me the account had been removed. However, I’m still receiving requests associated with it.

Has anyone else experienced this? I’m trying to understand whether this could be a technical issue with account removal and whether anyone has found a solution.

I’d appreciate hearing from other sitters who’ve dealt with something similar.

Help Needed Babysitting for a 2 year old

I’m a teenage babysitter with very little experience (I’ve watched a 10 year old and thats it) and someone reached out to me asking if I’m available to babysit their son who is 2 years and 7 months old. I was only planning on babysitting children ages 3-10 but I haven’t had much luck finding jobs/clients so I’m wondering if I should just take the job? I’ve done training so I’m sure I can handle it, it’s just a little nerve racking to be babysitting a 2 year old for the first time. If anyone has any questions that I should ask the parents to help decide if I should take the job please let me know. I also am not sure if he’s potty trained and is it weird if I ask? I’m not sure please help!

Late payments

I don’t know how to follow up with parents that even wait 2 days to pay me and need a reminder. it’s really frustrating and i feel like i’m crazy for expecting to be venmod right at the end of my shift? i showed up on time and provided care. it feels unfair to make me wait and have to chase you down for payment. when is too soon to follow up? usually i wait 2 days, right now it’s like 32 hours after my shift and still not payment.

Help Needed advice (non verbal kid)

I’m new at babysitting and i started babysitting 2 kids, one independent 8 year old girl and a 7 year old autistic non verbal boy. I need to be around the boy at all times and the activities we do are limited, he always wants the tv on and all he really wants to do is sit on the couch and hold his toys. The girl is always on her tablet watching YouTube videos (usually minecraft). Like for hours at a time and i’m just not sure what things I could do with them. And also how much screen time is too much? I feel like im neglecting them- im always with them, but the girl wants to be on her tablet and the boy can’t tell me what he wants to do. Like sometimes for hours we just sit on the couch, the girl on her tablet and the boy watching tv and just sitting down. Barely talking too.

Does anyone have any experience with babysitting a non verbal autistic kid?

How much screen time for this situation is too much?

Should i just let them do their own thing? And is being silent for a while okay?

I love kids and want them to have fun!! But it’s hard with an independent kid and a very dependent kid to know what to do. What things could i bring for us to do? I’ve brought lego but 1000 pieces ended up being flown across the living room by the boy lol

Screen time

I'm a babysitter and babysit a 3 y/o girl from 8:30am-6pm every Saturday. Her parent wants no screen time and I've tried to keep her busy and not have the tv on but she always gets bored so quickly, we've played hide and seek, colored, made cookies, played with building blocks and more in 3 hours and there's not much else to do besides let her sit bored or put on the t.v. She's also really energetic and rarely takes naps. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to keep her busy and engaged?

Help Needed He hit my 8 month old daughter

I sometimes babysit my nephew for my sister in law, he’ll be turning 5 in 3 weeks.

This kid as a lot going on, his parents are split, his dad just welcomed a new baby. His grandmother who is the primary babysitter had a baby last year, and his uncle (my husband) has an 8 month old. (My daughter)

His mom is almost never with him, always working or school. I watch him the few times his grandmother can’t. I should mention his mother lives with us and he has a room at our house as well.

Well, today he was saying some concerning things towards my daughter. He didn’t want her to play in the same room as us. She wasn’t anywhere near him or his things. He just didn’t want her around period.

I put our baby camera in their shared playroom because I had a bad feeling when she went in there to play. Lo and behold I was right.

He smacks her twice hard in the head with his baseball and the kicks her to the floor. She didn’t cry much because she was so scared and confused.

I immediately asked him about it, he doesn’t deny but just starts walking away from me. I called his mom and she didn’t do ANYTHING. She told him to apologize and when he refused she shrugged her shoulders and left it at that.

I’m so frustrated I can hardly think. I understand that kids are impulsive and he’s only 4 but what do I even do about this? I obviously will never leave him alone with her again. How do I approach this with my sister in law?

Question when is it acceptable to send another message?

Full disclosure: I babysit for this family over the summer and at the time we agreed to just pay me on Friday.

Now with the kids back in school, I usually only do occasional babysitting for them. The last two times they usually paid me on Friday despite babysitting earlier in the week which is like fine.

This week I babysit again for the family on Wednesday, and I was like okay I’m getting paid this friday. However Friday comes along and I see around evening times I still haven’t been sent the money. I send the parents a quick message reminding them. It’s now Saturday and I have not received anything not even an acknowledgment on my text. Should I give them till Sunday before texting again or the end of the day today?

Baby sitting rates/ what would be reasonable to charge?

Hello! I recently met with a single mom of two who is looking for a semi regular/occasional sitter for evenings/weekends, and after getting the run down of the job from her, need to get back to her with my rate!
I have a lot of experience house/pet/baby sitting, and a lot of this experience has been with well off families where i never had to decide on a “rate”but knew i would be paid generously.
I am a 20 year old part time college student, part time secretary where I make $20/hr.
The kids are 9 and 1, but she said that the youngest could be with his dad when possible.
I don’t want to be hurting her financially since i am supposed to be helping her you know.
She needs reliability and i need it to be financially worth it to give up my evenings and weekends (they are mostly spent cleaning and doing housework and errands).
Please just lmk your thoughts! You all seem to know your stuff haha. 🫶

Childminding

Hi I’m 19 level 6 qualification and first aid qualification.
I’m wondering how much I should be charging to child mind a 3 year old in a house 20 mins from me and then 7/9 year old in a house 10 mins from me
As I’m not sure what I should be charging that’s reasonable price as I get paid 16.50 where I work. As I know where we are living most people are struggling financially but 15€ an hour isn’t paying bc gas now adays.

Is Care.com worth it? Other successful sites?

Hi everyone!

I wanted to reach out to this particular community because I'm looking for a side hustle/gig as a baby-sitter, house-sitter, and/or pet-sitter! It's something I genuinely like to do, and I feel that I'm good at it.

I came across Care.com, and I'm wondering if it's worth the money? I'm kind of strapped for cash right now. But if it's a platform that has been successful for you, I'm willing to pay for membership. Or if there are other ones that you recommend that have a high response/success rate, I'd be deeply grateful to know.

My thing is, I just don't want to sign up for multiple apps just for nothing to work out, and then I wasted that money (but at this point that just might be the way of the game). The job market is not great in the States, and I'm just looking for any opportunity to make some money on the side on top of the full time job I work now.

Thank you all for your input!

Question Parent removed me on FB with no reply after I declined to babysit their child with a stomach bug. Am I being unreasonable?

I’m a caregiver with over 10 years of childcare experience, and I’m honestly feeling pretty hurt and confused by something that happened with a family I’ve been regularly working with for the past few months. I’d really appreciate perspectives from both caregivers and parents.

I’ve been caring for their infant almost every week/every other week since 4-5 months, and over that time, I’ve developed a really lovely bond with the baby and what I thought was a genuinely good relationship with the parents.

I’ve always tried to be especially accommodating with this family. Despite my usual hourly rate for infant care, I’ve been consistently accommodating and charged them considerably lower than my usual rate. I’ve also accepted last-minute bookings without additional fees and have occasionally held availability for them until the last minute. I genuinely adore their baby and have always enjoyed caring for her.

We had another booking scheduled for tomorrow, but tonight (13 hrs before the booking), the mom sent me a message with instructions for the next day and casually mentioned that the baby had been dealing with a stomach bug and will likely have frequent bowel movements tomorrow.

This was the first I’d heard about the illness.
I was honestly caught off guard because I don’t provide care for children experiencing potentially contagious symptoms/illnesses. I regularly work with multiple families, including young infants, and I try to be very mindful of potentially transmitting illnesses between households.

We hadn’t really had an explicit conversation about sick time care (in contagious situations), so I understand that the parents might not have known my boundaries. However, I also didn’t think it was unreasonable to expect a parent to disclose a potentially contagious illness and check whether their caregiver was comfortable proceeding.

I sent a warm, respectful message explaining that I wasn’t aware the baby had been sick and that I generally require 48 hours without vomiting or diarrhea before resuming care. I apologized for the inconvenience and wished their baby well.

The mom hearted my message and then changed it to a thumbs up 10 mins later instead. Since there was no reply, I felt like she was disappointed.
And then a couple of hours later, I discovered that she’d removed me from her Facebook friends. (She wanted to add me when I first started working with them, I do not prefer to add families on FB otherwise)
We had still been friends when I sent the message, so this happened shortly afterward.

I know a Facebook friendship isn’t necessarily a big deal, but given our relationship, the timing honestly stung. It made me feel like months of flexibility, accommodation, and genuinely loving care were suddenly overshadowed by one occasion where I needed to establish a professional boundary.

I’m not upset that she might have been disappointed about losing childcare at the last minute. I completely understand that arranging childcare can be stressful, especially with a sick baby.

What bothers me is that I wasn’t informed about the illness until the evening before, and the message seemed to assume I’d be comfortable caring for a child who might still be symptomatic.
I also feel sad because I’d developed such a strong attachment to their baby, and I genuinely thought I had a good relationship with the family.

I’m now questioning whether I handled this appropriately or whether my expectations regarding sick-child disclosures are unreasonable.

For other nannies/babysitters: Would you have handled this differently? Do you consider stomach bugs a reason to decline care, even if the family hasn’t previously discussed a sick-child policy?

For parents: Would you be upset if your regular babysitter declined care under these circumstances? Would you expect them to care for your child while they’re recovering from a stomach bug?

I’m genuinely interested in hearing different perspectives.

Help Needed Traveling to New Zealand: what to charge

Parents Traveling to New Zealand

Hello!

I have a family who has two cats, two dogs, a 12-year-old and a 16-year-old…. The mom and dad are traveling to New Zealand November 29- December 14. We live in NC. (they also just got a new puppy, but haven’t told me yet I saw from social media.) ( also two days when they get back they are taking the kids to nyc until the 22 for their Christmas gifts…. Money is not an issue).

I’ve babysat for this family on and off as the children have grown up. I regularly housesit/dog sit for them.

While they’re away for 16 Calendar days what do you think I should charge as a flat rate. I have a number in mind however a friend told me be prepared for them to cancel…. Do you think $6400 is too much? I actually think that that’s giving them a great discount. $400 a day….. for two dogs, two cats, two minors, and a new puppy….

I’ve obviously written out a contract but tomorrow is six weeks out so I wanted to send it to them to have them go ahead and sign everything but just wanted some opinions before!

I’ve nannied for over 6 years and I’m a a middle school teacher. I’ll be responsible for all house duties and animal duties. Getting the kids up for school. The 16-year-old will drive himself to school and from school. I’ll be responsible for the 13 year-old getting to and from school as well as any extracurriculars.

I’m literally being a working mom for two weeks.

TIA

How can i make my study notes a game my little cousins can play with me?

Im studying to be a medical coder. How can i make my study notes a game my cousins can play with me? They are 5&6 and 2 , but if i am going to babysit them, i need to give them all my attention. This way im enjoying their company and not just counting the hours until bedtime when i can study.
