Application Before you ask if you will get in read a little more of the Reddit.

Howdy Folks,

Seems that the question comes up again and again if people have a chance to get into BYU with a GPA of X and a SAT of Y and extra circulars. The student experience on here is going to be varied and you are probably going to be able to hear a lot of "Yes, but..." answers. There was a great post on here a couple months ago about admissions that you should read before before asking your questions and it will give you a good idea of your chances. The linked post below is a great one on how to stand out and how to improve your chances to get into school but you're going to hear the same answers again and again. We don't know because we're not the admissions department. There is no shame in reaching out to them and asking about your chances and you might even be able to network and find a way to tweak your application to get a better chance of going to BYU. That is important and will help you build confidence for future job interviews and other professional experiences. SO read below for ways to improve your odds of getting into the Y and know that the answers you'll get will still be "Yes, but..."

Do we think BYU’s med school will have a daycare?

Pretty much just the title. I’m not going to med school, but I know several parents who are premed.
It’s not uncommon for undergrads to have kids, so I’m guessing it’ll be fairly common for med school students to have kids.
Graduating without debt seems doable (25k/year for LDS) if a student’s spouse is working.
However, this would also leave many parents needing childcare.
The plans for the massive med school building could surely hold a daycare, right? And BYU is pro-family, so surely it would be a priority to support families, right?
I know childcare can be a hot topic in this sub, but what do we think? Could the med school help push BYU to start providing free/reduced childcare, even if just for med students?
EDIT: Last I checked, no daycare was mentioned on the website. They do say they’ll support families, but there’s not a lot of specifics there.

Affordable private housing near BYU for Winter 2027?

Hi everyone! I'm an incoming transfer student starting at BYU in Winter 2027. I applied for a private room at Wyview Park but got waitlisted, so I'm exploring off-campus options.

I'm looking for a private bedroom, ideally around $450–$500/month including utilities, though I can stretch to $550 for a good place. I'd prefer somewhere close to campus or easily accessible by public transportation.

I'm also planning to stay in Provo during spring and summer, so year-round affordability matters.

Does anyone have recommendations for apartments with reasonable rent and good management?

I've looked at a few places but noticed that additional fees and utilities can make the actual rent significantly higher.

I'd appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences. Thanks!

Do kids actually not drink there or have s*x?

Ofc im not talking about ALL the kids at BYU.
But i just watched the roca news video (I don’t live in Utah and know nothing abt BYU btw or Mormonism) and it seemed so wholesome and I really respect that most of the kids said they didn’t need alc to have fun! I completely agree. The sx thing i was also curious about, because obviously it’s college and college kids are “horned up” if you will. Is it actually that wholesome and innocent there?

Question to all of you when you applied as freshmen: Did you guys submit your applications early by November? Do they give more scholarship consideration to people who submit it by then?

Wymount Noise Reduction

We recently moved into South Wymount. From our bedroom we hear EVERYTHING that happens in the neighboring unit’s bathroom. Yikes! I’m not seeing this being talked about anywhere on here yet… has anyone had this experience with their more ancient housing units, and if so was there anything you did to help mitigate the noise? I wanted to set myself on fire after the neighbor’s shower turned on an hour before my alarm clock went off this morning. I’m not even joking, it is SO loud.

I’m thinking of trying sound-proof paneling or sleeping with earplugs. For the love of all things holy, I am in desperate need of you guys’ suggestions.

Edit: it is a two-bed, but the other room is already occupied by an infant and I would rather poke my own eyes out than have that baby woken up early.

Thoughts on my Winter 2027 schedule and professors?

Hey everyone! I'm an incoming transfer student at BYU for Winter 2027. I've registered for 16 credits and wanted to get some opinions on my schedule and professors.

  • MATH 112 (Calculus 1) – Robert Snellman | In-person
  • CS 260 (Web Programming) – Lee Jensen | In-person
  • STAT 121 (Intro to Statistical Data Analysis) – Tiffany Hilton | Remote
  • HONRS 120 (Interdisciplinary Introduction) – Eric Dursteler | In-person
  • REL C 200 (The Eternal Family) – William Duncan | Remote
  • STDEV 120 (International Orientation) – Robert Llewellyn | In-person
  • CS 191 (Exploring CS) – Daniel Zappala | In-person
  • SWELL 191 (Weight Training) – Sydnie Martindale | In-person

How does this schedule look overall, especially in terms of workload and difficulty? I'd also appreciate any experiences with these professors or suggestions for changes.

Thanks!

New Podcast Series from BYUradio

Hey, BYUradio just released a new podcast series Dispatches from the Divide in co-production with Braver Angels and Disagree Better. It follows four unique stories of ordinary people caught in extraordinary conflict like the man who showed compassion on the shooters family following a church shooting in Michigan, the politician who faced backlash from her whole community even those who initially supported her and two other high intensity stories. These are gripping stories about how real people responded when they were faced with extreme conflict. Give this a listen and share it with your friends and family!

https://lnkfi.re/DispatchesfromtheDivide

I think this really is an urgent exploration of American polarization and how we can all respond to the conflict we're faced in our own lives. Let me know what you think about it when you have a chance to check it out!

College GameDay Guest Picker Announcement for Week 7 (Steve Young)

Thumbnail

"Steve Young will return to Provo as College GameDay’s guest picker Saturday, putting a Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback and BYU legend on the ESPN set for the first top-10 matchup ever played at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

College GameDay analyst Pat McAfee announced the pick Thursday on his ESPN show, two days before No. 2 Notre Dame (6-0) visits No. 8 BYU (5-0) at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Former BYU coach LaVell Edwards filled the chair during GameDay’s 2009 Provo visit.

The Greenwich, Connecticut, native succeeded Jim McMahon as BYU’s starter and led the Cougars to an 11-1 record as a senior in 1983. He threw a nation-leading 33 touchdown passes that fall, won the Davey O’Brien Award, earned unanimous All-America honors and finished second in Heisman Trophy voting.

Twenty years later, BYU made him the first football player in program history to have his jersey retired, and his No. 8 banner went up on the press box at the stadium hosting Saturday’s game.

Young spent 13 of his 15 NFL seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, winning league MVP awards in 1992 and 1994. He threw a Super Bowl-record six touchdown passes to earn MVP honors in Super Bowl XXIX and later entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005."

According to this release from today, the medical school will open next July and will begin accepting applications within the next few weeks.

Not sure if this had been confirmed previously, but the new building will be constructed following the demolition of the West Campus Central Building currently located next to University Avenue. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, but the release does not say that it will be complete by July.

Best ROC PASS idea I've seen

Saw this idea on Cougarboard and liked it:

Students are guaranteed 3 or 4 games (based on supply/demand) per season.

Everyone who buy a pass gets the same number (whether it's 3 or 4) of guaranteed games.

Students learn which 3 or 4 games they are guaranteed at the start of the season.

Students with more seniority get better seating group assignments for the games they are selected for.

Also set aside a fixed number of ROC tickets for every game that, before each game, are awarded via a last-chance lottery that:
- requires student opt-in each game AND
- increases lottery odds for: other sport/campus engagement, seniority, returning unused guaranteed tickets
- decreases lottery odds for: no-showing for a guaranteed game

Providing students...
> the same number of guaranteed tickets,
> game assignments in advance, and
> a lottery to win/earn additional game attendance based on involvement
would be a massive improvement for all students while still leaving the Athletic Department the flexibility to seasonally determine the ideal number of guaranteed games and lottery tickets.

Application BYU_Provo International Student Application from the Philippines

Hello! Is there a Filipino international student in BYU Provo here who has an experience applying straight from the Philippines?

I would appreciate to hear your experiences and tips during you application period. I’ve read the steps and breaking it down here:

  1. Transcript Evaluation (there are two recommended agencies, which one worked better for you? How did you send your transcript?)

  2. English Test (TOEFL or IELTS, which one did you take?)

  3. ACT/SAT (any tips for this? Which test should be taken, ACT or SAT?)

Thank you so much. I appreciate any responses.

I really need help and don't know what to do

Hi all,

I've posted here a few times before, and you have all been so incredibly kind and gracious.

I'll be frank, I'm really struggling. Like, more than I have ever been in my entire life. I'm taking my last four economics classes (382, 431, 432, 463) before I (hopefully) graduate in December. But my mental health has been compromised so much to the point where I genuinely don't know if I can make it. It's been a constant struggle for about a year now.

I frequently deal with thoughts of running away from home. I even think about suicide on a daily basis. My faith is completely dying and I feel powerless to stop it. I'm right in the middle of taking 4 exams in 7 days and I just feel sick to my stomach.

All this being said, are there any resources for dealing with this? Either on campus or off campus? Are there people or places I can contact to get help?

Any input would be greatly appreciated ❤️

EDIT: Thank you all so much for your kind and thoughtful replies 🫶 I am truly so grateful for your love and support. I wish I had known about CAPS sooner. I'll try to meet with them first thing next week and level with my professors. You all are so wonderful. ❤️
