nux9 1.4.0: a console Linux distro with no GNU anywhere (musl, NetBSD userland, Limine)
Hey, I'm one of the author of nux9. I just put out 1.4.0, so I figured it's
time to show it to people who might actually care about this stuff.
It's a small console-only Linux distro with no GNU software in the base
system. Linux 6.18 LTS, musl libc, NetBSD's userland instead of
coreutils or busybox, Limine for booting (BIOS and UEFI), runit for
init, mdevd for device management, doas instead of sudo, OpenSSH, and
tcc as the compiler. Packages are handled by xpkg, and there's an
installer called xsetup. The whole ISO is about 285 MB and boots to a
plain console.
The idea was to see how far you can get with a base that has no GNU
parts at all and is small enough that one person can read through it.
The NetBSD tools turned out to be a good fit for that: the code is
clean and the tools behave predictably, though some scripts and
software written for GNU assumptions need a bit of care.
It's still rough in places and x86_64 only for now. If you want to try
it, the ISO and checksum are on the release page and the docs are on
the site.

I'd like to hear from people who use NetBSD tools daily: is there
anything obvious We are getting wrong on the userland side? And what would
you want from a distro like this before you'd bother installing it?
