I realised this when I was looking to see how I would have to do my son's facepaint for Halloween, not sure if it's been pointed out before. I would say it could just be coincidence but after watching the BTS for the movies almost nothing seems to be unintentional in terms of design choices.
This may also link in with the fact that Payakan has an injured left eye, the left eye being the Eye of Horus representing restoration after damage, associated with healing, protection and rebirth. The Eye of Horus was destroyed as he avenged his father Osiris to restore balance and wellbeing.
If we tie Loak and Payakan to the left eye, we can then tie Kiri to the right eye, the eye of Ra. Representing sun, light and highest strength. Symbolising protection and destruction as a means of safeguarding against threats and evil, which we see through Kiri's ability to call on the warrior mother. What makes this more interesting is Sekhmet, the lioness goddess (which could refer to the feline features of the Navi) is linked with the destructive aspect of Ra's daughter in mythology.
It does all seem to piece together. Would love to hear anyone's thoughts!
Edit: Also interesting that Seth - who damaged the eye of Horus is represented as chaos, destruction, and the barren desert, while Horus embodied sky, kingship, and order. Avenging Osiris meant restoring harmony and prosperity to Egypt.
Seth = RDA
Horus = Loak/Payakan
This would make Jake Osiris and Neytiri Isis so we may as well delve into that!
Osiris is the son of Geb (Earth) and Nut (Sky), brother to Seth who eventually murders him
Isis gathers his parts after he is murdered and restores him, conceiving a son - Horus. Isis is famed for her boundless resourcefulness and unmatched magical skill. Osiris remains after restoration, becoming ruler, Jake remains after restoration becoming Olo-eyktan.
The obvious issue here is the first conceived son is Neteyam, not Horus/Loak. Maybe here we could consider Osiris' sister Nephthys, a more elusive figure, associated with mourning and the fragile threshold between life and death. Nephthys was not simply a goddess of mourning ā she was the goddess of the protective night, the ordered household, the safe passage between worlds, and the resilience that holds families and souls together.
Another interesting titbit I've just seen is once Osiris became ruler of the underworld after restoration - he resided in the Hall of Ma'at. In the Hall of Maāat, the souls of the dead came before him to face the ultimate test. Their hearts were weighed against the feather of Maāat, the divine standard of truth and justice. The Hall of Ma'at, the Hall of Mo'at - the home of the Omaticaya and their spiritual leader.
Edit 2:
Ok so - linking back to Kiri, we talked about the Eye of Ra and the daughters of Ra. We have TWO daughters, Sekhmet and Bastet who both hold similar powers but represent the two sides of these powers. Sekhmet represented plague and illness while Bastet was depicted as protection against contagious disease and evil spirits. What's interesting is these are both feline goddesses who are represented with a round, red crown - just as Varang is. Could be a connection with Varang and Ra there.
There are a lot of name similarities, such as Neteyam and Nefertem, Varang and Ra, Mo'at and Ma'at, Neytiri and Nefertiti
Edit 3:
Another interesting link is the significance of eclipses in the storytelling of Avatar. Eclipses are considered to be signs of danger, and the eyes of horus and ra represent the sun and the moon. The eclipse is the moon blocking the sun.
Okay I gotta go to bed now before I turn into Charlie from Always Sunny š
