Discussion Weekly Discussion Thread

Hello everyone, welcome back to the r/AustralianPolitics weekly discussion thread!

The intent of the this thread is to host discussions that ordinarily wouldn't be permitted on the sub. This includes repeated topics, non-Auspol content, satire, memes, social media posts, promotional materials and petitions. But it's also a place to have a casual conversation, connect with each other, and let us know what shows you're bingeing at the moment.

Most of all, try and keep it friendly. These discussion threads are to be lightly moderated, but in particular Rule 1 and Rule 8 will remain in force.

I've written a review of Tom Griffiths' book The Art of Time Travel. In it, he examines numerous Australian authors who have written about history, both fiction and non-fiction, and explores the many historiographical tensions that emerged in the discipline during the post-war era. It is a great book about Australia and how history, and the ways in which it is interpreted, fundamentally underpin our identity.

Hasnt been reported in the news so the premiers site will have to do.

The report shows the state recorded an operating surplus of $2.4 billion in 2025-26 – the largest since 2016-17.

This surplus was $1.7 billion higher than the $727 million estimated in the Victorian Budget 2026/27.

Net debt was $4.7 billion lower than estimated in the Victorian Budget 2026/27, with a total net debt of $160.7 billion as of 30 June 2026.

Net debt as a share of the economy was also lower than forecast – 24 per cent of GSP, compared with a forecast of 24.7 per cent
