Heath aster thoughts/experiences

I have a front corner of lawn that needs something white and I'm considering heath aster (the flowers are cute and I think there's a cultivar that is more of a ground cover). Alternatively, I could put some in rock garden in the back yard. If you have it in your garden, how's it done for you? Hard to control/too aggressive? My other thought for a bit of white is to seed lazy daisy (Aphanostephus skirrhobasis) from native American seed (already have blackfoot daisy but don't like how unhappy they get after heavy rain).

More stuff in pots -- fertlizer?

So I've done some shifting of things and put out some more stuff, just wondering what I should use for fertilizer. Sun is still going to be an issue, but can't stop trying.

Currently planted (growing): 5-7 bags of Japanese sweet potatoes, 1 bag of 1.5 Pequin pepper plants, 1 bag of 2 Thai chilil peppers (just transplanted) and 1 mibuna plant (transplanted) and Italian flat-leaf parsley (same)

Seeds: Multicolor blend and Detroit dark red beets, Watermelon Radish, Italian arugula, Bok choi, Long Island Mammoth Dill, Chives, Rainbow Swiss Chard, 2 types of cilantro.

To plant: More Italian flat leaf parsley, romanesco bulbing fennel, thyme and oregano.

December: Hopefully harvest the sweet potatoes and plant 3 types of regular potatoes

Next Spring: Holy Basil/Thai Basil and other stuff.

Where can I get small/starts silver ponysfoot?

I want to try to have my paver patio fill in with ponysfoot (full sun west facing). I wanted to get some pretty small plants due to the limited space between the pavers. The ones I saw at natural gardener were pretty limited and sorry looking. anyone know a better spot?

also feel free to tell me if this is a dumb idea, very open to that haha

my husband picked these up at NG last week and got them planted this weekend. they looked a little scruggly when we got them and now that they’re in they look worse. The leaves are pretty crispy but the branches are still flexible and green. we have some mulch to add. I also know that the deer fence is wishful thinking. Well probably fix it eventually haha

Week 12 banana update

Post image
55 Upvotes

My dwarf Cavendish bananas are now in their twelfth week and are starting to loose their sharp edges. It shouldn't be too long before they are ready to harvest! For the past three chilly nights, the bunch has been covered in a paper shopping bag covered with a black garbage bag. The plastic bag was opened at the bottom so moisture didn't build up inside. I'm not sure how much warmer the fruit was inside the bags, but I wanted to protect the peels from any cold damage. Going forward, this week's weather should be perfect to help the fingers plump up.

Non Native Lantanas: Remove and Replace with Natives or Keep?

Thumbnail

Hello! I have an ever increasing group of these lantanas growing in my yard. I know they aren't native, that they spread over time, etc. But they seem to attract both bees and butterflies, and they look fine with zero care or watering. I didn't plant them, a volunteer popped up in 2013 and it just kept expanding its territory...

What is the guiding wisdom on this matter? Keep them? Remove them and plant something new?

Thank you!

Question Garden in Minutes System

Hey anyone tried the Garden in Minutes irrigation system? I just replaced my 1/4 rainbird lines in one bed and am now looking at replacing another cause they are clogged from hard water.

My question is do they work and how long do they last? Also do you mulch on top of the system or below. Something I read said you can’t mulch on top cause it will interfere with the water coming out but if you mulch below then a lot of your water is going to be absorbed by the mulch.

FAQs:

1) Are you willing to lower prices if I'm super nice and will take good care of the plants? Yes.

2) How did you measure the size? Size was measured from the most extreme dimension of the plant/pot I could find. For example in item #2, I measured height from the lowest the plant dangled up to the top of the plant. I may be off by quarters of inches here and there.

3) Will you deliver to me? Sorry, no I can't do that.

4) Will you help get the plant/pot in to my car? Yes. I have a hand truck/push dolly that can help move the heavier plants. For some of the big plants (the agave, peach, plum, bay laurel, bird of paradise, etc.) I may need your help in lifting it into your vehicle. Let me know via direct message if you have any physical concerns with transporting the plant and I'll see how I can make this work.

5) Will you throw in something for free if I buy something? I just may do that.

6) When and where can I pick items up? I live in 78756 and can share my exact address to people that want to pick up an item. Generally, I could be available most of the day Sunday 10/18, and much of the day during 10/20 - 10/23. Send me a DM and we can arrange a time that works for both of us.

7) Are you plant IDs accurate? I think so. I included a question mark if I wasn't sure.

Native Plant Society of Texas Native Plant Sale on Sunday 10-2pm

[11:30 update] There is no line and plenty of amazing plants available! Come drop by before 2 pm and find the perfect plants!

Are you looking for native plants for your garden, yard, patio, school, or natural area? We have plants for you! We offer plants that are native to Texas and the Austin area. They will do well here because they are used to our weather and our soils! They support our wildlife, like birds and pollinators with food and habitat.

Date: Sunday, October 18

Time: 10AM to 2PM

Location: Native Prairies Association of Texas
Dowell Ranch
301 FM 1626
Manchaca, Texas 78652

Our sale will include a variety of native plants that may not be commonly found in local garden centers.

Are you new to planting native Texas plants? We'll have people with expertise available to help answer your questions and give recommendations! Bring a box, wagon or cart to help transport plants. Plants will be arranged into plant type categories (grasses, groundcovers, herbaceous, shrubs, trees, etc.) and then by alphabetical order by scientific name. Please do not bring dogs to the preserve.

More information, including our plant list: https://www.npsot.org/chapters/austin/plant-sale/

We are introducing a 2 1/2 inch pot size with a lower selling price than the 4 inch plants.
Seed list:

Bluebonnets, Blue Curls, Clasping Coneflower, Cowpen Daisy, Maximillian Sunflower, Texas Paintbrush, Narrowleaf Purple Coneflower (Black Samson), Antelope Horn Milkweed, Butterfly milkweed, Whorled Milkweed

For this sale, we are introducing 2.5" sized pots and for a lower price than the 4" pots. These pots have a smaller base and may tip over a little easier than the 4" pots. We think they are worth it, but also be gentle carrying them to your car.

We have an extra special treat for you this sale! We have invited Andrea Delong-Amaya from the LBJ Wildflower Center to come and sign books. You can purchase her book at the cashiers table for $24.99 and then take it to her table to get it signed. I highly recommend this book. The photos are gorgeous and there is so much to learn about native plant gardening and on each Texas native plant.

One last thing is that we typically do have a line to enter the plant sale. We open up to everyone first come, first served, so please be patient. We limit the number of people within the sale area so that it does not get dangerous or too crowded. This helps everyone to have a pleasant shopping experience. Everyone working at the sale tomorrow is a volunteer, so be sure to be kind and give them a big thank you! This sale wouldn’t happen without our awesome volunteers. A big thank you to Dowell Ranch and the Native Prairies Association of Texas for hosting us, as well

See you there!

Could y’all help me identify this wildflower? I picked and pressed it this past spring, and I looked through the Lady Bird Johnson wildflower center database and couldn’t find a good match.

Thanks for your help!

Dilemma with Aloysia gratissima and plateau goldeneye

So I had bought an aloysia gratissima and planted it, but then another plant was growing right with it in the same spot. I wasn't sure what it was so I let it grow and it grew really big and was blocking out the bee bush. Plant apps were telling me sunflower, but it never bloomed, so maybe camphor weed but that didn't seem right. I cut it back a lot and now it's blooming and it's plateau goldeneye. Should I try to dig these up and separate them? Or just keep cutting the plateau goldeneye?

Any luck with Japanese Maples?

I want to plant an Orangeola or Crimson Queen. The spot I’m planning on gets a little morning sun, but plenty of afternoon shade. Anyone have any luck with either of those two?

I have a Bloodgood in a different spot and it got beat up by the summer heat and dryness, even in nearly full shade. It’ll be fine at least. I probably also under watered it.

Originally asked for identification here

Folks asked for an update on the bloom and here it is! She was pretty ravaged by the wind from the cold front that blew in the other day - lots of broken branches but at least she bloomed beforehand.
