Firstly, thanks to everyone for keeping this sub tidy. We receive a fairly modest amount of modmail that drew manages to smash through fairly easily whilst i go argue with cunts on other subs. But occasionally i do stuff.
As always, please remember to post your budgets as it helps us give you solid advice.
So for starters we're going to start post flairs for your state. Just a very simple way of trying to make things more discernable for your audience- lots of advice, particularly around prices, practices, trade availability and stuff is state dependent. Not mandatory, but feel free to use them.
Secondly, we are appointing User Flairs, so if you are a licensed tradesperson or similar (we have a flair for building surveyors), please let us know if you'd like to get a flair. Unlicensed/unregulated trades, we'll try and figure something out.
And finally, we're as usual interested in taking applications for a couple of moderators to just keep on top of the spam and increasing requests into the mod queue, its not huge work but drew does most of it as i try not to get sucked into reddit too much. So hit us up like a 4/10 tinder match at 2am on a sunday.
Shit a brick, we've gotten over 55k members! So myself and u/drewdles33 have decided we're going to get a dollar from all of you and go put it on the virtual dogs and see how we go, might be able to buy a carpark in inner western Sydney if things go our way.

Give any and all opinions please :) doggo tiles are 20cmx20cm and this is a rough idea of what it would look like. Price not really a factor, located Qld. Would the super 3D tile be more difficult for a tiler to install, especially around the box in the corner (pictured).
Edit - it has come to my attention that AI has messed up the dogs in the image. The actual tile is here lmao https://somertile.com/ProductDetail/FCD10OMD_Oh-My-Dog-934x-934-Porcelain-Floorwall-Tile
Edit 2 - marked NSFW because got dam. I can’t take the main pic down I don’t think. Thanks everyone for the chuckle though. It has been entertaining 😂 perhaps the doggos were too far out there. First attempt at showing some personality through either tile has been firmly shut down ahaha

Jesus wept another edit - PAINTERS DIDNT PREP THE WALLS*** extraordinary that I, a novice, didn’t know that washing walls wasn’t mandatory and that peeping them to paint was a different thing.
My husband and I wanted to get some painting done, MIL offered to come over and let them in while we were away and we’ve come home to a pretty fucked job.
They didn’t wash the walls. The paint is coming off in our bedroom (can scrape it off with a finger nail). There’s other stuff too, but the paint coming off is my biggest concern.
wtf do we do? I don’t particularly want to get them back to do more work because evidently they’re useless. How do we rectify it ourselves?
I’m pregnant with a toddler…so wishfully hoping for a miracle fix
ETA: to clarify I didn’t deliberately scratch it, I was putting a fitted sheet on our bed and my nail got the wall and paint came off. I’ve painted a few times (fairly averagely) and it’s never happened

Found 2 of these babies without their wings lying indoors on the floor next to my front door.
I did a quick search online and it seems like if you have an infestation you quickly know you do (Like dozens, hundreds of these things).
If I just found 2 lying around dead on the floor, what are the odds i have some infestation in my house and they crawled out vs they came from outside flying around and ended up in my house since it's raining and warm?

Had some guys in today to install a new roof space access hatch, ladder, and board over some of our roof space so we could use it for storage. Guys worked hard, were here far longer than they'd said they would be, so no complaints about their attitude.
But - one of our ceiling AC vents, under the area they were working in, is now full of white fluff. Like the stuffing of a soft toy or something (sorry for the awful photo - it's 11pm).
Any idea what this is and do I need to worry about my AC ducts?

Happens during heavy rain, all of the water runs to this area just off my patio and also pools towards the back of the yard.
There is a quite obvious dip on the path where the water pools, would concreting this more level help the issue?

Hi all,
Removed the tiles Infront of our shower and the subfloor has rotted out. After going under the house the damage to the structure is pretty terrifying. Top beam is essentially gone, with the lower main beam having clear water damage.
Stopped and called insurance who said claims related to the shower base failing are not covered. However the shower base itself or pipework hasn't failed, clearly the waterproofing around it has though as it's entirely Infront of the shower
Would I be covered for this? I fear I'm possibly looking at something I can't afford to fix
This bathroom was installed years before we moved in
In Melbourne with RACV

Hi, I recently found a property I absolutely love , but the house is cladded(I think that's the right word?) completely in aluminium weatherboard over the top of the existing wooden weatherboard.
I might be googling the wrong thing but I can't find any information online but am worried about things like rot under the metal cladding as it has been played directly on top of the original cladding.
At best I was able to see into a old hot water cupboard built onto the side of the house where the original cladding was visible and seemed fine.
Is it really that bad of an idea? Is there any signs to look out for or any directions to look for more information?
TIA

Chasing some opinions on an $1100 paint job I had done in my bathroom?
The bloke presented really well and sounded like he really knew his stuff. During his quote we discussed: - We’d had new cornice installed and some of the mitres were not amazing due to out of square walls so he would need to fill to hide. He said no problems you won’t even notice the gaps once he’s done. - There was also quite a lot of what I can only assume was mess on the walls from a bad DIY plaster job from a previous owner. - Overpaint of the waterproof membrane from the tilers not using tape, which he said he would scrape back. - Small gaps behind the gold tile trim due to uneven walls which needed to be filled.
We agreed there was quite a lot of prep work to be done, and he said he would sort it all out so it all looked good.
Photos show the end result. I don’t know I guess for $1100 I was expecting a much better result. But this is the first time I’ve had painting done in a long time, was this price too low for the sort of finish I was expecting? I am very pedantic so maybe I’m being too harsh.
Here’s his messages for what we agreed on:
“Hi mate, was lovely to meet your partner. I gave her the quote of $1000 for the bathroom. That includes all the preparation, materials and labour to the ceilings, cornices, walls, doors and doorframes. I explained we could get this done Thursday if that would suit you guys.
That would be cash price. With GST would be 10% as usual.
Yeah there's a fair bit of prep work to be done. Includes using proper kitchen and bathroom ceiling paint too so it's mould and moisture resistant”

Hi guys. Can someone tell me what’s gone wrong with the mortar colour? There are light and dark sections throughout the wall. Is repointing the only way to fix this? The brickie used wash beach sand to make the mortar. Is that standard practice?

Picked up a couple cypress pine posts from a local timber yard chain store yesterday.
I know they have risk of cracking and splitting if they are not handled well - predrilling etc. But i didn't expect them to be so cracked when i pulled the plastic off them today.
These were dressed and finished pencil edged posts. Supposed to be nice.
There were cracks and splits all over. Some of them look to run almost the length of the post. The are meant for a feature patio cover in the yard. Imo they are not something you want in your line of sight. Every side has
Cracks. The ends have splits and bits even breaking off.
So im going to return them tmrw. Anyone had the same issue?

There is a small (5mm) gap between the floorbaords and the entry to the bathroom. The gap is the width of the doorway. I assume the bathroom was added on seperately at some point creating this gap. The gap drops straight to underneath the house with only some underfloor insulation batts between. These batts probably need replacing as they pretty messed up, so at this point you can definitely feel a draft through the gap.
Would filling with spray foam and then covering with a piece of quarter round work?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

I’m in the process of purchasing this 1940s concrete block property and beginning to think about possible future reno/decor ideas.
The main bathroom has been updated quite recently, however, the previous owners have covered up an old window. On the other side of this window is the ‘laundry’ - a room that was never there in the original floor plan, but previous owners had built a wall between the kitchen/3rd bedroom that was once an open outdoor patio space (hence the window).
Any suggestions on what to do with this window feature? I feel it looks a little out of place, but unsure what to do - any advice or ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Had some built in shelves constructed for a bedroom cupboard, as part of a Reno.
Is this acceptable?

Hoping to get your opinions on how to make this floor plan a bit more free flowing when it comes to entertaining. The current layout is a bit pokey/awkward/disjointed. We’re using the rear bedroom as our main living room (an extension that has a lower roof line than the original house) which also probably doesn’t help.
Looking for as little changes as possible, as we’re not planning on doing a proper Reno.
Some thoughts we had were removing the wall between the kitchen are rear bedroom/living room, but keeping the bench, but keen for others opinions as we may have blinkers on after having lived in it for a few years now.
Budget: $10-20k
Location: Melbourne

I requested a quote from a company via a Contact Us form on their website. Bloke visited today, spent a reasonable amount of time looking at the place with me. He explained there would be a charge but that would be subtracted from the final cost of the work if we accepted them for the job. I said yeah ok, and he went to his car to do the numbers and make some calls to other trades.
When he came back he told me he had 'numbers' and could tell me what the four different options were (for different amounts of work - we may do it in stages). But he wouldn't give me a quote in writing, and said I wasn't permitted to write down the amounts he quoted verbatim (which was weird frankly - like, we're in my kitchen fella). It's a big house and there's a lot to do, and pretty difficult for me to remember a list of options and the costs attached to each. I explained that I thought I'd requested and paid for a quote, and he said no, I'd receive a 'report' detailing the work that needed to be undertaken, but without work details or costs. Only after we'd accepted the verbatim "amount" and paid a deposit of twenty per cent of the "cost" would we get an actual quote (and I presume a scope of works?)
Does this seem arse-about to anyone else? And pointless? I mean I know what work needs to be done - it's literally the reason I contacted them in the first place. The rationale seems to be to discourage me from getting other quotes, but of course I'm getting other opinions and costs like any sane human would. And now I don't have one from them to compare with others. So what and why? Has anyone else experienced this??

Hey all! I’ve asked a wood rot question here a while ago https://www.reddit.com/r/AusRenovation/s/1RxRqjmDd5 thanks for all your responses!
Now it’s all starting to fall off and I want to try replacing the wood planks myself 😂 i think I’ve got the red outdoor paint from the previous house owner, though looks like there’s also a white layer between the red paint and the wood, any idea what it is and where to buy? If you can share some tips for those kind of paint job that’ll be great too.
Located in Canberra and want low spend if possible.
Thanks a lot!

had somebody at my place this morning, installing posts in my front yard (between front garden and verge) as part of a picket fence installation.
he cut through some unknown writing while digging holes. you guys may have about as much of an idea as me as to what these may be (no idea at all) so not necessarily asking for speculation but i'm mainly wondering who to call regarding this? an electrician? western power? someone else?
or if my home and power is seemingly unaffected, shall i just bury it and forget about it?
thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi,
Wanted to get some advice. Got some quote for my house renovation, but all of are upwards of 200K.
I have started to get some other quotes, for the individual things, such as kitchen, bathroom, flooring, painting but many of the builders aren't even keen to do just the kitchen and bathrooms, they want everything.
Based on my estimates there is nearly a 50-60% mark up, from the quotes I have got from people doing the painting and flooring. This makes me wonder if I could try to do the renovation interstate, while visiting using things like the plumbing rough off, water proofing, installing of the fixtures.
Is this remotely feasible? Maybe I get the kitchen, bathrooms done by a builder and then smaller things like painting and flooring I see what I can manage?

I've used Airtasker once to get a removalist, which was really helpful, but we have a bunch of jobs I'm trying to get done that aren't all trade-related. Some are to do with getting our car fixed and specialist people we're trying to hire. Just wondering if either of those tools is going to provide any value there.

Has anyone tried this before? I know that ply in the long term changes colour a bit and might warp etc but I think for a weekend job on a rarely used cupboard, it’s a pretty solid option. Tempted to do it on other cupboard around the house.. kitchen very tempting but I know ply in there might be silly.
3mm general ply from Bunnings $40
2 tins of Kwik Grip
Feast and Watson stain with sanding between each coat. Then painting the edges dark brown to match.
You may notice the ripples on the left door.. where I accident lined up the cladding wrong and had to pull it off before the glue set (Kwik Grip contact glue sets instantly so I stuffed up there lol)
Hope to either inspire people to give it a try, or get some feedback from people that have done it then later regretted.. I know it looks alright right away but interested to know how well/poorly plywood holds up over time

metro melbourne , looking to update kitchen + laundry, pretty much just replace current bench tops and sink, remove a door , install a vanity where there is currently just a sink
most kitchen and bathroom places that i’m finding require you to have a minimum spend in a particular room - i’m NOT handy at all so diy not really an option

Our tiler is supposed to be coming to screed the shower. Is it standard for such large gaps between FC sheeting and the cement floor (floor by builder)? Should the builder have done something different or is it up to the tiller to sort it? And how?
