Do not solicit legal advice. This is not the right sub for it.

Despite what our sub’s called, we cannot offer legal advice here for a number of reasons. Any posts that breaks this rule will be deleted without reason. If you message us on why your post is deleted, it would be ignored just the same way you’ve ignored our sub’s rules. Please see our sidebar for complete rules.

Also, it’s not a good idea to solicit legal advice from random strangers online, despite what you may find elsewhere on Reddit. We do not know all of the facts of your case, and are likely not licensed in the jurisdiction that you’re in. A real attorney worth their salt will not comment on your specific legal predicament on an anonymous forum.

If you need legal advice but cannot afford it, there are legal aid societies that may be willing to assist you. Lots of them are free and/or work on a sliding scale fee. All you need to do is look up “legal aid society [your location]” on Google.

If it’s a criminal case, public defense attorneys are some of the best attorneys out there and they know the criminal system in your city/town better than anyone else. They’re just as good, if not better, than any private criminal defense attorney.

If it’s a tenant rights issue, lots of cities have tenant rights unions. You can look them up the same way as the legal aid society by looking up “tenant rights union [your location]” on Google.

Otherwise, the best way to find an attorney is through word of mouth from friends and family. If that’s not an option, your local bar association will be able to help by looking up “attorney referral [your location] bar association”.

If none of these are relevant to you or you’re unsure of what type of attorney to look for in your situation, you’re more than welcome to post and we’ll help.

Also, any attorneys who wish to participate in discussions are free to do so as long as it doesn’t break our rules (mainly providing legal advice).

If you’re a licensed attorney that isn’t flaired (and therefore verified to post comments), please see our other stickied post on how to become verified here. You can also send a mod mail to become verified. I trust that any attorneys here answering any posts will follow these rules and not offer legal advice and run afoul of our ethical obligations.

Thanks to all for understanding.

Buffy: the vampire slayer- who is liable?

In the final episode of season 4, the mayor has his ascension to demonhood at the high school graduation ceremony. He becomes a giant snake demon. He does kill a few in the process. While buffy has gotten the whole graduating class to partake in defending against him, there is no damage done to the property. When she runs into the school and lures him in, he destroys a TON of property. Walls, the library, etc. Then Buffy and Giles blow up the school/library to kill the demon mayor.

My question is: who is liable? Who would be getting sued? Would it be the town, since it's mayor is really the one who instigated the whole situation? Or would it be buffy and Giles for blowing up the place, despite that they were trying to save the entire graduating class, and probably the world? Or perhaps the school committee for allowing the ascending demon mayor to speak at the event in the first place?

Question to US lawyers. Isn’t it illegal to call yourself a lawyer if you have not passed the bar exam?

Hi.

I recently saw a video of the new white house press secretary Katie Zacharia claiming she is a lawyer but she has not passed the bar exam in any states. She has referred to herself as a lawyer/attorney in many social media posts . Isn’t that impersonation? Isn’t it illegal?

I’m not from the US. Just confused.

Edit: hi i think she got fired

Well I’m fucked

Location: California , The purchase. May 28, 2026, Winnetka DMV field office
I bought a 2019 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG from a private seller I found on AutoTrader. Because of the amount, I refused to do it privately and insisted we complete it at the DMV.
We went to the counter together. The seller's title showed a lien from Carvana/Bridgecrest. He handed a signed lien release on the title page directly to the clerk — I never saw or held it. I asked the clerk specifically about the lien and she told me it was released. She processed the transfer. I paid him in full in cash at the DMV that day.
DMV then issued me a California Certificate of Title in my name with no lienholder listed. From that date forward, DMV records showed me as sole registered and legal owner with no lien.
The car had engine and cosmetic issues. I did the work myself over the next three months. Purchase plus parts and labor, I'm into it for about $58,500.

I purchased full coverage insurance on the car.

The repossession — August 17, 2026
Between roughly 5 and 11 PM the car was taken from Santa Monica , friends house, while I was asleep. Swift Recovery Group took it, acting for MVTRAC, acting for Carvana/Bridgecrest. No court order, no notice, no contact with me before or after. Santa Monica PD declined to take a theft report. LAPD later took one and classified it as "theft by trickery," with me listed as the victim.
What happened upstream
The person who sold me the car had obtained it from Carvana using another individual's stolen identity. That individual is a genuine victim who had nothing to do with selling anything to me — she filed her own report in June, before my car was ever taken. I'm now in contact with her directly.
Swift told me the repossession authorization names the previous registered owner as owner, and Carvana as lienholder. That's the exact title configuration DMV superseded on May 28. So on the day they took it, they were acting on a lien the State had already released, naming as owner someone who was no longer the owner of record.
The insurance denials — three of them
Comprehensive coverage was in force. Denied August 31, upheld September 10, upheld again September 22.
In that third letter they conceded, in writing: the title identified me as registered owner with no lienholder; I completed the purchase in good faith and followed DMV procedure; they do not contend I participated in or knew of the fraud; and the question of whether the seller held void or voidable title is not resolved on the record.
Then they denied anyway, using a structure I can't get around by argument. Exclusion 13 is conversion. Exclusion 15 is repossession by a party acting on behalf of the owner. Their position: if Carvana owned it, it's excluded repossession — if I owned it, Carvana's taking is excluded conversion. Excluded either way, so they say they don't need to resolve who actually owned it.
They also admitted they possess none of Carvana's transaction documents, payment records, repossession authorization, or repossession report, and never obtained the Sheriff's report. Their entire account of Carvana's role came from a verbal summary a detective gave them over the phone.
The DMV voiding — last week
DMV voided the title they issued me, on the basis that the seller's documents were “suspected to be forged”. They also acknowledged the forged document passed through their system and was processed.

Called 30+ lawyers, no one will help.

What the fuck do I do.

Free trials from US- and Germany-based companies, used repeatedly with virtual cards - legal risk if I visit or move there? (I'm not from either country)

I'm not a citizen or resident of the US or Germany, and I want to understand my legal exposure.
Two online language-learning companies, one US-based and one German-based, offer free trials that require a payment method. I've been signing up for multiple trials with different email addresses and disposable virtual credit cards, so I'm never charged when the trial ends. In some cases the name on the payment info was only my first name. The goal is to get free language classes. The teachers are paid by the platform for those classes, so the platform loses money, not the teachers.

My questions:
Is this likely to be illegal (e.g., fraud) in the US or Germany, or just a terms-of-service violation?

Does it matter that the payment details were incomplete or the card couldn't be charged?

Does the scale matter (a few trials vs. dozens)?
If I later visit the US or Germany, could I be detained, questioned, or have problems at the border?

I may emigrate to Germany in the future. Could this affect a visa, residence permit, or my record there if the companies reported it?

I understand this probably breaches the companies' terms of service. I'm mainly asking about real legal and immigration consequences. Thanks!

Voter Fraud?

I will admit, this is a weird one even for me, and I am not even sure this is the right place to post this.

Long story short, I work in an industry where most of my coworkers are Republican-leaning white men. Well, this week during a conversation, one of my coworkers casually said, "X admitted to voter fraud."
He then explained that he knows this person—along with one of our clients—voted using their children’s mail-in ballots while the kids were away at college. Apparently, they even joked on the call that their children would be pissed if they knew their parents voted for Trump on their behalf.

I am 99.9% sure I can get the recording where all of this was shared. But I can’t stop thinking about the matter-of-fact way my coworker shared the news. It was almost as if it was common knowledge that a lot of Republican parents did this while their kids were at college.

Is this as rampant as I am now learning? Is this truly just something parents do no matter what side of the aisle they sit on? I feel like this is finally me understanding what Republicans are always screaming about when they talk about cheating... they are doing it themselves.

I don't know, maybe I'm just an old man yelling at clouds, but I cannot shake this feeling of sickness knowing that some terrible people (my coworkers, not Republicans in general) knowingly broke the law.

I won my small claims case, but during the appeal, the judge barely questioned me and mostly listened to the defendant. Should I be concerned?

I had filed two claims against an ex-friend and was awarded with $21,000. The defendant appealed and made his case yesterday. During the trial de novo, he was making false accusations, attacking my character, just putting me in a negative light to make me look like an untrustworthy person.

He told the judge that I was in a relationship with him, that he saved me from an abusive relationship where I was doing drugs all the time, that I was an alcoholic, that I was predatory with collecting money because he deemed the demand letter my lawyer wrote as “threatening,” that I was predatory because apparently I had secret meetings with his mother to collect money that he owed, that I was physically abusive and he had to defend himself by pushing me, that the reason I am now sueing him for money is due to intense jealousy, that the video he submitted to the court system shows that I was physically restraining him from moving… It was hard to keep my composure during some of these lies and I probably made a face or two but what really surprised me was when he claimed I was disseminating nude photos of myself to harass his family members and friends and hearing that made me quietly blurt out “that’s not true, I’m sorry, but that’s not true. When I said that the judge looked at me and nodded and then looked back at the defendant to talk. The defendant had the nerve to lie and say that he had proofs of texts showing that I shared my nudes. He claimed that I waived the debt, showing a text between a conversation of his mother and I, claiming that I had forgiven his debts and then lied that I told him in person that I forgave him as well.

The only two questions that the judge asked me was if I had waived the debt and if I was claim-splitting. The judge said she would review my evidence to see if my claims were filed correctly and she allowed me to explain if I had waived the debt.

I said no, I didn’t waive the debt. I explained that I had an agreement with the defendant about the amount and the date he was supposed to pay me, and when it was time to collect, I realized that he blocked me. The only person I knew to contact was his mother (who I was in good terms with) and she was the one who actually insisted that I take her money because she knew that he didn’t have the financial means to do so, and she said she was helping him on his behalf. She agreed to pay me $500 on the first of each month. The statement that I forgave the debt was made in a private conversation between the defendants mother and me. I never communicated to the defendant that I was releasing him from his obligation to repay me. On November 30, 2025 his mother asked to borrow $1000 from me which she repaid the next day on December 1, 2025. But on December 2, she asked if she could pay me $500 on December 6 and at that point I felt guilty because she was asking me for loans while also trying to make payments on her son‘s behalf. I told HER that she no longer had to pay for her son‘s debt because I wanted to release HER from feeling personally responsible. I did not intend to cancel the defendant’s obligation. I never told him that the debt was forgiven.

He continued to say negative things about me in his closing statement. The judge asked me if I had anything else to say. Although I was very shocked to hear everything, I kept my composure and looked at the defendant and stated, “I don’t see how this is related to you requesting for financial assistance, and I lend it to you because you said you would pay me back.” The judge then says “Yes, it is not related but I will review both of your evidences and mail you a decision in 7 to 10 days.”

If the defendant brought up irrelevant information, made personal accusations, or attacked my character instead of addressing the money I claim he owes, how would the judge view those statements? I am afraid that the judge will side with him. The judge mainly listened to hear the defendant’s statements and I was only asked two questions. I am feeling very hopeless that I wasn’t able to defend myself against everything the defendant said.

Ex Won't Pay Me Back and Abandoned Her Cat

Florida— 5 Months ago, my ex-girlfriend moved out of my house. The rules given to her were to pay me back $1,300 after she gives back north (I lived in Florida). She said she was going to come back for her cat that she had chipped and tagged. She has only paid me back $800 of that money, but has abandoned her cat. She says if I try to put him under my name, or if the vet tries to contact her about me trying to put him as my cat, she will try to sue me she says. She is refusing to pay me as well. The thing is, when she was here, she wasnt even taking care of the cat. No food, No cleaning, nothing. I had to do that.

Overtime at a florida restaurant

Is it okay for an employer to spread overtime across a biweekly pay period? I.e 38 hours week one 42 hours week two. Also if they own two different restaurants as separate entities, can they eliminate overtime by splitting your house between the two restaurants?

What kind of lawyer handles this?

Burner account obviously. There are websites on the internet that are able to dredge up old things that have been scrubbed from the internet. I found doxxing information about me on 3 specific websites that has already been removed from its original source. I have submitted a removal request to all three, but what kind of lawyer would I need to send them a letter or at least be somewhat imposing to show them this is a serious matter if they do not remove it. I have no experience with lawyers so maybe this is a very simple thing. No idea. Not asking for legal advice, just asking what TYPE of lawyer I should look for.

Stalking order

I have a recently termed employee that I was granted a temporary stalking order along with 2 other employees. She violated the order by driving by the office last week. We are awaiting surveillance footage and I was told she will likely be arrested next week for 2 stalking violations. She has a previous felony from 20 years ago, but is on probation for attempting to purchase a gun as a felon. By chance, her parole for the attempted gun purchase ends next Wednesday. My question is if the violations occurred while on probation, but the warrant isn’t issued until a few days past probation- is she in violation of probation?

I have a meeting with a criminal attorney next week to help me navigate the final stalking order hearing. This has just been weighing on my mind in the mean time. I am located in NH. Thanks for your input.

Is it legal to audio record senate representatives?

A representative came to my school and I audio recorded her answers. Let’s just say her answers were pretty hateful and homophobic. This was on a highschool campus, outside while I was walking with her. This is in Pennsylvania. I did not let her know I was audio recording but it was senator for a day and there was a lot of camera recording her and stuff like that so could it be implied consent? I want to see if I can send clips to news departments.

Anyways yeah… she also called me stupid without using the word stupid because I asked her if she knew the difference between gender and sex.

Thanks all.

Final wages CA

I resigned without notice on 10/8/26 in person with my manager. I followed up in writing that same day. When I quit my employer said they would notify me when my check was ready to be picked up.

On 10/14 they notified me that it was ready via email and I responded back that I would be in to receive it. Well when they handed it to me it was on a prepaid wisely card. I told them I don’t accept this. They never discussed this with me and also I never consented to a prepaid card as a form of payment. I handed it back to them and followed up again via email.

They responded that they don’t need prior consent to authorize my funds this way per labor code 212. But everything I read said they do. I responded that they were supposed to offer me an alternative method and they offered me direct deposit. Then they refused direct deposit stating bc the card was already funded.

They acknowledged via email that they still have the card. How should I proceed?

They also still owe me 9 hours of mandatory training that they are refusing to pay me for.

What defines legal advice?

I understand that if Katie Zacharia gives legal advice, that is illegal. But what defines legal advice? Is opining on the law in the official role of Press Secretary an example of legal advice? If Zacharia were to assert something like "The law allows Trump to run for a third term because 22A refers to consecutive terms" during an official press event, is that legal advice?

If she comments something like, "No, XYZ person is not allowed to sue this administration because reasons" in a press briefing then is that legal advice?

Is there any way she might get in trouble if she were to assert something like, "I'm a lawyer, and I can tell you that this is the law..." but then says "Well, I wasn't giving legal advice because I wasn't HIS lawyer"?

Should I seek an Employment Lawyer?

Note to Moderator: If this is not appropriate, please delete....

I am not asking for referrals. I am just asking if I *should* seek one out for my situation.

I am 67 years old in upstate NY. I have been employed at a company for 12 years. Never been written up, reviews have all been above average.

Over the past year my responsibilities have been slowly assigned to others. I was planning to work for another year. My supervisor has his favorites and I am not in his 'inner circle'.

A month ago, my manager asked me "How long do I plan on keep working?"

I told him another year or two.

He then asked me "Think about what kind of package would it take for you to leave. Write up what you want and I promise to talk to HR and to fight for you"

So I wrote up a list (12 months severance, paid 12 months Cobra, stock options vesting.). I used both what I heard others received, as well as I used AI.

My boss asked me to send it via non-corporate channels. So I sent the proposal to him via SMS (in hindsight, that was probably a red flag).

Anyway, He gave notice and left. He told me that he spoke to my new supervisor and Human Resources.

I had a meeting with my new manager, and he stated "So I was told you approached your old boss about a package."

Needless to say, my jaw hit the floor! I corrected him, and stated that no, HE initiated the conversation.

I now how a meeting on Monday with Human Resources, but I fully expect that they were also told incorrect information as well.

My question is, how much did that reduce my bargaining? Should I contact a lawyer? Again, nothing was on corporate channels. I don't want to deal with a 'he said' situation. I do not want to waste anyone's time if my situation does not sound favorable -- I would rather just work there until January, pick up some stock options and corporate bonus, and then leave...

Landlord said we are violating the lease because we are running the AC at night even though it's 60°F (15.5°C)?

Location: Massachusetts

My BF (22M) and I (20F) are having multiple issues with our landlord.

My main concern is in September, he gave us a piece of mail stating that it is not reasonable use of utility to run the AC at night when the temperature reaches 40°F (4.5°C) (he pays for electricity and lives in a separate part of the house). The mail also claims that by running the AC when it is below 60°F (15.5°C), it damages the property (water damage, mold, etc.). We have ignored such request and continue running the AC and he is now stating that we are violating the lease because he gave us notice. BUT we never signed agreeing to such notice and the original lease only stipulates reasonable use of electricity. Does he have any grounds to argue this?

On top of this, we plan to go to court over him breaking our lease:

  1. He is terminating our lease October 31 because the lease states “within 30 days, the landlord can terminate the lease.” Even though it is an addendum in the lease, we do not think that this is enforceable with our 12-month lease. (We already have another place lined up for October 31).
  2. He has entered our apartment without notice multiple times (once 3 times in a single day). We have video (no audio) proof of him doing so on 3 separate days. In September, he texted “can you turn off the AC off when you are away." Later, he verbally claimed that the text was him giving notice to us that he will enter our apartment to turn the AC off. The mail he gave us in September also does not mention that he will enter our apartment to turn off the AC. We do not think that this counts as notice. The lease says the landlord needs to provide notice to enter the apartment.
  3. He has disrupted our right to quiet enjoyment. He called the police on us because we were running the AC at night, claiming we were trying to start a fire. We have the police record that the incident happened, but no details. We can pay to get the video recording. He also continuously texts us at night to turn the AC off. Sometimes we agree and turn off the AC, sometimes we ignore and don't.

Do we have grounds to sue him on the basis of breaking our reasonable expectation of quiet enjoyment? Do we get our rent back if we win in court for having no quiet enjoyment and no privacy of our apartment? Has he broken any other laws?

He is threatening to evict us if we are still here after October 31. The lease says we have to pay for reasonable attorney fees. Have we done anything wrong that he can fight back with and will we have to pay for his attorney fees?

Edit: The AC is a window unit that we installed with the landlords permission. The AC unit is ours. Also this probably doesn’t change much but we live right next to an air strip so we can hear the airplanes go by. Would prefer not to open a window…

Edit 2: I’m probably not saving this but this is the weather this past week.

Edit 3: We will be going to bed soon so will stop replying. Thanks for all the replies, this has been very informative.

Hello lawyers! I need to interview a (criminal law) lawyer for an assignment. I only need 15-30 minutes of your time.

I AM NOT SEEKING LEGAL ADVICE. I am a criminal justice student and my for Crimj 420: Criminal Law and Procedure class, I need to conduct a brief interview with a lawyer working in criminal law. I have contacted almost every local firm around me for a while and I have not gotten any responses back. So now I am trying here as a last resort. I would really really really appreciate anyone willing to help out! I’ll post what needs to be discussed, as it is just about your education background, career and daily work. Thanks again in advance!

•Where did you go to school for your undergrad and where did you go for law school?

•How did you find the law school experience?

•What was most challenging about breaking into the field?

•What made you want to get into criminal law?

•How long have you been practicing?

•What do you enjoy most about your career?

•Is the career different from your expectations? How?

•What is the most challenging or draining part of your job, and how do you handle burnout or emotional weight?

•What does a typical day look like for you?

•What are some common misconceptions that students or the public may have about criminal law?

Why is it misleading for Katie Zacharia to call herself a lawyer, but acceptable for Abdul El-Sayed to call himself a physician?

Genuine question, not trying to make a partisan point. Zacharia has a J.D. but never passed the bar. El-Sayed has an M.D. but never completed residency or obtained a medical license.

I understand why El-Sayed can call himself "Dr." based on his degree, but isn't "physician" the equivalent of "attorney"? Both have the education but not the license to practice.

Is there a meaningful distinction I'm missing?
