I have four childhood friends that I consider close as sisters (we're all 32 or 33F). We live about an hour from each other near NYC, except for one who moved to Europe. I'm the only one not originally from NY, and moved there partially to be closer to them. I'm married but none of the rest have partners or kids.
2019: I invite a bunch of girlfriends to dinner for my 25th birthday. They all say yes. As I'm on the train headed to the restaurant, every single one texts me and says they can't make it. They all have some excuse -- they're sick, they forgot, their dog died, etc. I go back home and cry in my husband's arms. It sucks, but I tell myself this is just some freak coincidence that won't happen again.
We get dinner together a few times over the next several years (except the pandemic ofc), but it's never all of us together. One specific person never makes it and always has some dumb excuse (once she said "I fell out of a chair really hard and my butt hurts so I have to stay home"). I haven't seen her in person since 2019.
2022: My wedding in NY. We postponed for COVID, so they have two years' notice. Three show up, including the one who had to make the trip from Europe, but one says she is sick a few days before and can't come. If you've thrown a wedding, you know last-minute cancelations are a pain because you're paying per plate. We have a great time, but I still feel salty looking at the photos and videos seeing four of us when it should have been five.
2023: Husband and I moved apartments. We each invite a handful of friends over for a housewarming, and buy all the food. Again, all of my friends either say no or cancel at the last minute. All of his friends show up and feel sorry for me. I'm deeply embarrassed and resolve to never invite people to an event again, because it's been too many times at this point and I'm tired of it.
2024: Friend in Europe gets married there. We are told with a year's notice. I offer to pay for everyone's flights and hotels because us all being together is more important than the price tag. They all say no and I'm the only one who makes the trip. She's very happy I came, but I'm disappointed not one other person said yes to a free trip to Europe. (I haven't heard from that friend in a while but last I heard, that marriage was on the rocks.)
Now, to today. Husband and I bought a new apartment and invited all our friends over for a housewarming party. I was very nervous the same scenario would repeat itself, but they all told me they were coming (except the one who didn't come to my wedding, I don't invite her anywhere anymore because I know she won't show up). Over the last couple days, the other two both told me they're sick and can't come. They profusely apologize and offer to send a gift and arrange a time to meet up later.
My birthday is in a few months and they agreed to see a Broadway show with me. This is our favorite show that we all bonded over as teenagers. I picked my birthday because it was the best way I could think of to get them to say yes. But I'm worried they will cancel at the last minute again.
What can I do? I know people getting sick is not something you can control, but this has been a pattern for years and I'm sick of it. It shouldn't be this hard to get together a group of gals who live in the same city (exemption for the one in Europe of course, I don't expect her to show up, LOL).
I'm so jealous of friend groups who get together regularly. If your girlfriends have drinks every month or something, how tf do you make that happen? After all these incidents, how can I ever trust them again?
I've spoken to them all about this and they told me it's not personal, life just happens. So please no comments like "they're not your friend" or "they don't want to see you."
