Travel & Places Friend missing in Turkey

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

Hey reddit,

A friend of mine has been hiking alone in Turkey and we haven't heard from her for 6 days.

A missing person report has already been filed with the police. I am urgently asking for help to spread the word and reach anyone who might have seen her or have information about her whereabouts.

If you have any information, no matter how small, please contact the Turkish police.

Please share this post widely, especially in hiking, travel and local communities in Turkey.

Thank you

Politics & Governance Böyle bir gelecek mümkün mü?

• Upvotes

Önümüzdeki 10 yıl içerisinde beyaz yakasından mavi yakasına yapılan tüm işlerin yapay zeka tarafından yapılabilecek kıvama gelmesi durumunda çok kritik işsizlik krizleri başlarsa;

Tüm dünya devletleri vatandaşlarına günlük olarak temel ihtiyaçları doğrultusunda yardımlar yapar ve ömür boyu yan gelip yatar mıyız? böyle bir gelecek mümkün mü?

Politics & Governance Which benefits Turkey’s long-term goals more: rising ultranationalism in the EU or good old EU-style liberal-right-wing politics?

As far-right parties that oppose the EU and want to end support for Ukraine are gaining ground in Europe, which political side is better for Turkey?

Culture Turkish vs English

Hi, if someone could answer me this would greatly appreciate:

Is calling a girl hot in turkey received offensively/disrespectfully?

What about calling them sexy?

EDIT: it is not a random girl; I’ve known her a few months. She always takes normal compliments well, like calling her pretty or heart eyes, she just happened to take hot as sexually suggestive. She is also very religious. Istanbul. We have a language barrier as she speaks Turkish, but I speak English and am learning Turkish

Travel & Places Question about Skyscrapers

My norm was skyscrapers being in the downtown and the suburbs being low-rise. But in Ankara this was the opposite considering outer districts and former villages like Beytepe or Dikmen are full of luxury skyscrapers with empty grass plots or sometimes literal farmlands next to it. So my question is that why do people live in very tall buildings far from everywhere?

Language Turkish-English bilinguals needed for research! (approx. 15 min)

Title: Turkish-English bilinguals needed for research! (10–15 min)

Merhaba everyone!

I’m a Psychology Master’s student at Humboldt University of Berlin, and I’m currently working on my thesis about how people experience and interpret emotions across different languages.

One of the things I’m particularly interested in is how emotional meaning is represented in Turkish compared to English and German. The Turkish language is currently underrepresented in this field of research, so we want to change that. Unfortunately, Turkish speakers are often harder to reach in international psychology research, which is why I’m hoping this community might be able to help!

Why does your participation matter?
A lot of psychological research focuses on English-speaking populations. By including Turkish speakers, I hope to contribute to a better understanding of how language and emotional meaning relate beyond English. Especially in times of online and AI translations, this becomes even more important.

What would you need to do?
1. Be 18 or older, make use of both Turkish and English at least weekly, and speak both languages and least at an adequate level.
2. Complete a short online survey (approx. 15 minutes)
3. Read everyday sentences and rate their emotional meaning

You don’t need to be a native English speaker or have any background in psychology!

Here’s the study link:
https://www.soscisurvey.de/vadlang/?upool=tr

Participation is completely voluntary.

I’m especially hoping to reach more Turkish–English bilinguals, so even sharing this with a friend would mean a lot.

Thank you so much for helping a Master’s student with her research! Çok teşekkürler!

Politics & Governance What’s the truth about Turkey’s economy? I just don’t get it

I’m going to Turkey next week, and people keep saying that it’s become ridiculously expensive over the past few years, so I did some research.

The Turkish lira has dropped over 80%, yet GDP has doubled in just 5 years in USD

People’s earnings have also increased in USD

Prices for pretty much everything have sky rocketing

A Starbucks coffee costs 3-4 times as much as it did before COVID.

An iPhone 18 Pro starts at around $2900

I’m confused.

So, has Turkey simply experienced massive inflation while its economy has continued to grow,
or what’s actually going on?

Are Turkish people actually better off now? Is travelling abroad much more affordable for them than it used to be?

Travel & Places Cappadocia solo exploration advice

Would you advise bus tours, car rental, walking or taxis for getting around and seeing everything in 2-3 days?

Do the tours use the big coach buses or the small shuttle vans?

Any local places to eat that don’t have tourist premiums? Any esnaf locantasis or doner spots to recommend?

Miscellaneous Cansu Dortkose

Post image
0 Upvotes

There used to be one youtuber from Turkey named Cansu Dortkose, who used to make reaction videos on bollywood songs, movies and other Indian content.

As a very curious and good fan of her reactions, i genuinely wanna know why she disappeared suddenly from YouTube?

Anyone from Turkey can tell where she might be or how is she doing in life? Just worried about her.

Her subscribers mostly wanna know about her because she has kept us in dark for so long.

One day in 2025, she posted a comeback post on Instagram and Youtube that she is gonna be back with a video very soon. But today is October 2026, more than a year has passed and again she is nowhere in social media.

If her close friends, well knowers or anyone if knows about her, please tell how is she?

Culture Do turkish people fast in Ramadan?

Hi ! Im not turkish, im arab (not muslim) but ive always heard turks are not religious and they're more secular. However I wanted to know how non religious/secular is the general population?

In my country for example, during Ramadan id say most people are fasting, and eating in public is frowned upon and most kids are expected to fast. Is it the same case in turkey? Or is it more like 50% fasts the other 50% doesn't?

Oh and, are marriages done islamically or just legally? In my country even non religious families do their marriages both legally and islamically.

Oh and, what's the % of women who wear hijab? And is not wearing it frowned upon? Im jordanian, id say in my country aside from Christians maybe 20% of women dont wear it? In richer areas most women dont wear it and in poorer areas women wear it and are generally more religious, regardless tho not wearing it is generally not viewed in the most favorable way.

Thanks !

Shopping & Prices Gold buying in Turkey 🇹🇷

Hi everyone!
I’ll be visiting Istanbul soon, and I’m interested in buying some gold while I’m there. Since it will be my first time buying gold in Turkey, I’d really appreciate some recommendations from locals or people with experience.
Could anyone recommend reputable, trustworthy gold shops or jewellers in Istanbul with fair prices? I’m looking for somewhere reliable where I can be sure I’m getting genuine gold at a reasonable price.
I’d also appreciate any tips on what to look out for when buying gold in Istanbul, especially regarding prices, purity, and making sure I’m not overpaying.
Thanks in advance for your help! I really appreciate any advice.

Personal Issues Looking for someone I met

Herkes merhaba,

Onu nasıl bulabileceğime dair her türlü tavsiyeye açığım. Umarım bu paylaşım kendisine veya tanıdığı birine ulaşır :)

(translated with Google)

hello, everyone

I hope it's ok to post this here.

I am looking for a passanger that was on TK1348 on 9th October (Friday) between 21.30 to 23.30 from Cluj, Romania to Istanbul, Turkyie.

He was a Turkish man, don't think he spoke English, brunette, brown eyes, shaved beard, accompanied by 3 other men (possibly friends). He was sitting on 17C.

He looked at me the whole flight, made eye contact, smiled and translated some stuff from Turkish to Romanian for me. Wanted to reach out to him after the flight, but I got in a different bus and lost his sight. I'd like to reconnect if he wants it too.

Any advice on how to find him helps, maybe this post will reach him or someone he knows :)

Travel & Places Tukish passport, I want to travel to Mexico

I want to travel from Guatemala to Mexico. I read that if I fly with an airplane, I can use the SAE (Sistema de Autorización Electrónica) and I don't need a Visa. But it depends on the airline if they will accept the electronic authorization at the moment of check-in.

Has anyone tried that? This option only applies to Turkish and Ukrainian passports I think. Do you know if Volaris accepts the SAE?

Thank you. Any help is very appreciated. I really want to visit Mexico during the Día de los muertos 🌸
