Purdue vs Northeastern (Energy/Renewable Engineering)
Choosing between Purdue and Northeastern for engineering with an Army ROTC scholarship covering tuition at both schools, so cost is completely off the table. My target is renewable energy and grid storage (think grid-scale batteries, offshore wind, electrification infrastructure. Not oil, not nuclear)
Purdue is the obvious academic powerhouse as it's better ranked, stronger research, harder curriculum. But Northeastern has a structured co-op program with 2-3 six-month rotations, and Boston has GE Vernova, Form Energy, Eversource, and National Grid all within 30 minutes. Also I genuinely prefer cities over college towns which probably factors in more than I'm admitting.
I've been told undergrad should be about soaking up fundamentals and research, where Purdue wins. I'm not sure I fully disagree but I also think real industry experience early matters a lot in a field as new as renewable energy.
Questions I have:
- In renewable energy hiring, does Purdue vs Northeastern actually matter, or do employers care more about skills and co-op experience?
- For grid storage or offshore wind specifically, is Boston the right market or are there stronger hubs I should know about?
- Anyone done ROTC alongside an engineering degree, how did it affect your career coming out?
- Does being in a city vs college town during undergrad actually affect opportunities, or is it mostly noise?
- Purdue has 600K+ alumni, NEU has 300K total with 54K in engineering, but does alumni network density in the energy sector matter more than raw size?

Hi there! Can I please have some advice from people who are experienced in this?
Ok, my child just turned 4 in January. He has had an already pretty traumatic life.He was born with volvulus and had to have to very serious surgeries at the beginning of his life which gave me extreme anxiety.I was literally scared to do anything out of fear of him getting sick or hurt. Anywho fast forward he developed a speech delay. He has been in speech since 20 months old. He has progressed but I could tell something was wrong with his mouth. It took me a lot of drs to finally get someone who would listen to me. Come to find out he has a pretty severe posterior tongue tie and he can't touch the rough of his mouth with his tongue causing his annunciation to not be clear. He is scheduled on Tuesday to get a release after 6 months of myofunctional therapy . The thing I am scared of is the conflicting data on tongue ties and all the different information I keep getting from professionals. I can clearly see he has swallowing issues and that he has trouble touching the roof of his mouth etc but the fear of putting him through another procedure and it not helping is overwhelming . He has already been through so much. Anywho does anyone have any experience with this or any advice for me?I feel so torn and I just never know if I'm doing the right thing.

Experts opinion from a Sports Psychiatrist
Hello All
I'm a journalism student in Melbourne, Australia, writing an article about the benefits and downsides of running. It is easy enough to waffle on about the mental and physical upsides, but the downsides are something I am curious about.
I wonder how often a Sports Psychiatrist encounters someone so focused on getting specific running numbers that not achieving them affects their mental health. Obviously, I can't ask about specific people, but I just wanted to ask some questions about that and if it is a real thing.
If you, or someone you know, is a Sports Psychiatrist, please let me know. I would love to set up a quick interview! (Online is fine)
Thanks!

Garage Door Suddenly Stuck
I live in an apartment that the landlords are just complete liars and I don’t want them where I live but everything is broken. Everything breaks specifically tonight all of a sudden my garage door won’t go up. Luckily my car was outside of it already.
I looked up some things I believe it is the motor because it is making the sound wanting to work, but the cable that specifically is attached to the motor that pulls up or lowers the garage door is not moving. I’ve seen a chipmunk and then a mouse running along the top of it in the past and I believe this wire coming out on the side there in the picture (the gray wire ) is new, but I’m not 100% sure.
The springs on the top and the cables on the sides are fine. There doesn’t seem to be anything blocking it and it was just suddenly after three years.
I was wondering if there’s something I could do before having to deal with my landlords to call someone to come fix it. Thank you!!

Doctors, are you open to giving students shadowing opportunities?
Hello,
I'm working on a side project and would love feedback from this community.
The current situation: Pre-med students often resort to cold calling practices, sending mass emails, or relying on personal connections to find shadowing opportunities. Meanwhile, many physicians are willing to host

Is this normal? (I was going to post on r/askdocs but it was removed and I don’t feel comfortable disclosing the information it asks for)
whenever I’m about to throw up or even just feel nauseous i start quickly producing more and more spit to the point where I have to try to swallow it in order to breathe or talk without drooling and the spit is also way less bubbly more round and oddly enough it sticks to my tongue and the sides of my mouth easier. Is this normal? Should I act upon this? At least for me it’s been helpful, but I’m not sure if it’s normal or problematic

Can anyone help me?
I went to an ER on Sunday, March 2nd, 2025 around 4am in extreme pain. After a few hours (without any pain meds) and a CT, the ER doctor assigned to my case decided that since I have a history of PCOS, that my enlarged ovary, shown in the CT, must be the cause of the pain, and it was likely just a PCOS flair up, considering me to not be in an emergency situation, and to follow up with an OB. I didn't receive pain meds till 15 minutes before they discharged me from the ER. I followed up with my OB as soon as possible, the earliest I could be seen was Tuesday, March 4th around 9am. The OB looked at the CT from the trip to the ER and came to a very different conclusion, thinking the pain was from Ovarian Torsion (which is definitely emergent). She sent me immediately to a different ER for a follow up ultrasound and most likely surgery. The ultrasound confirmed Ovarian Torsion, and based off of the timeline, the OB was highly suspecting me to be necrotic and prepared me to lose my ovary, which I did. Had the the original ER Doctor believed me when I told him that the pain I was experiencing was not normal PCOS pain, and had he investigated further, he could have saved my ovary. I have reached out to multiple Texas law offices without any luck on pursuing a medical misdiagnosis claim, but staff at the original ER keep recommending legal action. Any advice on if I should keep pursuing this or just give up?

I can't find work in the field I've studied in and I'm loosing moral. I need the honest opinion from someone working in web development.
Hi, so before the pandemic, I've graduated from college in multimedia and web development. During the pandemic, I went back to college in a different field, because I couldn't find work at the time.
I've graduated from the second program last year and did an internship for a few months at a company. My internship has ended over 3 months ago and they didn't have any position opened for me to stay.
Now, I'm looking for a job in web development, but every job offers seems to wants someone with a degree in computer science or knowledge in specific framework that I haven't had the chance to see during my time in college.
I no longer have any portfolio ready, with all the data on a damaged drive I have to send to data recovery. I need to rebuild myself a new one from scratch, but can't find the motivation to. My parents are breathing down my neck and by the time I actually got a bit of practice with any tools or framework needed for the position, applications are already closes. All this really builds up on my stress and anxiety and saps me of all energy.
What I learned in college about web development :
- HTML
- CSS
- JavaScript
- PHP
- mySQL
What I'm currently self-learning:
- Node.js
- React
- mongoDB
Do I have enough to at least have a chance ?

a laptop question
I don't really know any of the basic knowledge of hardware and stuff so I need some advice.I got my laptop cleaned (physically) the other day and when I went home and opened it, the wifi was one bar and so slow, I used it for a couple of hours thinking maybe it'll speed up later but it was still slow. I tried restarting my laptop, going back to a previous restore point but it didn't work, it was still one bar. I went back to the place I got it cleaned, they unscrewed and open the laptop, I saw them detach something that was probably the cpu? and clean it a bit and reattach it and some other stuff, now its constantly 2 bars and still super slow.
PLEASE GIVE ME A CLUE WHY ITS SO SLOW
Additional stuff: I ran an mbps test and it barely cleared 20 mb download and 9 mb upload, it was WAYYYY faster than that before the cleaning

Nuclear fallout radius and mushrooms that absorb heavy metals
Okay hiiii, I’m writing a short novel based off of a post on tumblr about fae folk hating iron cause it’s a stable element and loving radioactive things for the opposite reasons. This has led me down a few rabbit holes. i would love if someone with a special interest in either of these or a job would give me some answers :)
One) for a 9-megaton nuclear bomb, how large on average would the fallout and radioactive contamination zone be, knowing that the burns would be around a 20 mile radius? Because I’ve asked google and it’s being really vague saying “quite large if blown by winds” like give me numbers! Or even estimates of numbers! How much of a city would be fenced off after a 9-megaton bomb? How hard would it be for you to access the city and would neighboring cities/towns be evacuated?
Two) this wasn’t on purpose but I fell down a bit of a rabbit hole and discovered that mushrooms can absorb heavy metals from their soils. Such as iron. Of course, I—very reasonably—decided that this would mean the fair folk would surround their barrows so that people who tried to get in using iron to protect them would get absorbed into their giant magic fairy circles. Do mushrooms actually absorb iron? Also, if you wanted to kill mushrooms, what would you use, my current fix is a mix of magic and real life fungicides: salt (to strip moisture), vinegar (heard it works) as a powder/distilled, clove powder (kills mould), and some plain old fungicide from a grocery store. Is this at least a little grounded in reality, I need somebody to validate its reliability.
Three) realistically, how many people could you fit on an electric scooter/moped? Currently I’ve got three teenage girls and a ten year old, all about to fall off, is this stupid?

Doctors/Nurses/Paramedics - Questions about cardiac arrest and follow-up treatment
Not looking for pressing medical advice! Just a writer trying to wrap their head around a scenario they built into a story.
- What time frame can a teenage patient be reasonably expected to stay unconscious after successful defibrillation from an in-hospital cardiac arrest incident? How much would this differ from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest incident?
- Would something like this prompt you to put such a patient on IV nutrition and/or urinary and rectal catheters? If it would take some amount of time to determine these as necessary treatments, how long would that be?
- Would a patient being unconscious change whether or not ice packs are used to reduce swelling around broken/bruised ribs (from CPR)? If they are still used on an unconscious patient, how often would they be changed?
