I had a vivid dream just before waking up, and I’d be interested in hearing how current or former law-enforcement officers might interpret the situation and the emotions involved.
In the dream, my younger brother and I were driving home from a cross-country road trip through Iowa. An Iowa State Patrol vehicle came up behind us with its emergency lights and siren activated.
I was driving in the middle lane of a five-lane interstate and tried to move to the right shoulder, but cars kept passing me on the right, preventing me from getting over safely. Eventually, I managed to pull over.
Despite my attempts to comply, I was arrested for felony fleeing or eluding. I invoked my Fifth Amendment rights and began paying attention to the officers’ names and badge numbers because I felt that I was being treated unjustly.
The dream continued with me being transported in a windowless bus and eventually learning that my bond was $80,000. I became increasingly angry and started thinking about holding the officers accountable through a lawsuit.
To be clear, this was entirely a dream. I haven’t experienced this incident in real life, and I’m not asking for legal advice about an actual case.
I’m curious about a few things from a law-enforcement perspective:
1. Traffic stops: If a driver is attempting to pull over but traffic prevents them from reaching the shoulder, how might an officer distinguish a genuine attempt to comply from deliberate evasion?
2. Officer perception: If an officer mistakenly interpreted that situation as fleeing, what kinds of observations would ordinarily help clarify what actually happened?
3. Emotional reaction: In the dream, I became focused on recording the officers’ identifying information and seeking accountability. Does that resemble a common reaction people have when they feel they’ve been treated unjustly or lost control of a situation?
I’m especially interested in how officers might interpret the scenario, rather than assuming the officers in the dream were acting maliciously.
The strongest emotions I woke up with were anger, a desire for accountability, and a feeling that consequences should follow if someone abuses their authority.
Have you encountered real traffic stops where a driver’s difficulty pulling over was initially misunderstood?
