Use this thread to ask general questions that apply to you more than to the region.
For example, what music you like that is acceptable, what quirks or behaviours you have that are seen as offensive, if your music would be appreciated.

Salam alaikum. I am a muslim revert who did a DNA test and turns out, I'm mixed with the caucasus region, about 16%. I was closest to Abkhasian, Adygei and Georgian. I am very inspired by all of the muslims of the caucasus, and being european mixed with russian and the caucasus automatically makes me feel an affinity for this place, especially Chechnya and Dagestan. I wondered what would have happened if my family didn't come to Europe, what would life be like.
It is very lonely as a muslim in Sweden. How cringe is it that I identify with you guys? Not in the sense that I am from your place, but my family came from there and unfortunately left. I feel like I have more in common with a muslim from Dagestan than a non-muslim from my country. I wished I could ask the person who immigrated here why, what happened, but they died before I was born. I long for a culture that was lost because of assimilation. I am greatly inspired by your guys' resilience and strength, like how Imam Shamil resisted for so long.
Love from the north. I wish to visit one day.

I’ve been interested in the history of families in the Caucasus who claim Arab ancestry, particularly those who trace their lineage back to the Quraysh tribe or the family of Prophet Muhammad.
From what I’ve read, these families seem to be especially present in Dagestan and Chechnya, but similar traditions can also be found in other parts of the Caucasus.
I’m curious whether anyone here knows such families, or perhaps comes from one themselves.
I have a few questions:
Do these families identify as fully Caucasian (Chechen, Avar, Ingush, Circassian, etc.), as Arab, or as both?
Do they still preserve stories about their Arab ancestors? How far back can they trace their family history?
Were there any cultural differences in their households compared to other families from the same ethnic group? For example, traditions, marriage customs, religious practices, or anything else?
Did other people in their communities know about their ancestry, and was it considered something special?
Have any of these families taken DNA tests, especially Y-DNA tests, to investigate their paternal ancestry?
Do you know any specific family names, clans, or villages associated with these traditions?
I’m particularly interested in how these families have preserved their ancestry over generations while becoming part of Caucasian societies.
I’d love to hear personal experiences, family stories, or historical information from any part of the Caucasus.

In a lot of western countries blonde hair is extremely popular on women, many women start dying their hair as it gets darker in adulthood. It’s basically been seen as the pinnacle of beauty for years. Many women even report being treated way better with dyed blonde hair than brunette (by men and strangers). Does the same cultural preference exist in Caucasian regions? I’m asking because even in countries where blonde hair is rare it’s still romanticized.

Are you a native speaker of Georgian and willing to help out in research? Please reply to my questionnaire about Georgian dialects!
I'm a Linguistics Master's student from University of Helsinki, Finland conducting a research project on Georgian dialects. My study depends on me getting as many answers as possible, so any help would be greatly appreciated :)
I'm traveling to Georgia (Tbilisi, Kutaisi & Zugdidi) with my research group 17.-26.10., so there's also a possibility for a short 20-30min face-to-face interview if you would be interested!
დიდი მადლობა დახმარებისთვის!❤️

Hey everyone, I'm doing some cultural research and wanted to ask about how traditional Circassian communities in the Caucasus view marriage outside the ethnicity, specifically when it comes to the diaspora.
How strict are families living in places like Nalchik or Adygea regarding marrying outside the culture? And for someone from the diaspora (e.g., in the Levant) who has partial ancestry (like a great-grandparent or grandparent) but grew up entirely outside the culture without speaking the language, would they still be culturally considered part of the community, or are traditional families very rigid about sticking strictly to local/pure Circassian bloodlines?
Also, does a distant or partial bloodline actually affect acceptance for marriage among them, or is the bloodline alone enough to be welcomed by everyone?
Just curious about how strict these social norms actually are nowadays. Thanks!

Hey guys! Random question, but are there any Circassians who are Christian, or does anyone know any Circassian Christians? Just curious if there are any communities out there today. Would love to hear if anyone knows anything about this!

Hi,
Native Georgian speaker here. I’ve been teaching for about 3 weeks now (mostly people from Reddit) and I’m open to new students.
Before that I spent years helping international volunteers and non-natives practice conversation and adapt to everyday situations.
I cover everything from absolute beginner to advanced and always keep an individual approach. Looking to start from zero, improve casual speaking, or just survive markets and taxis, I'm happy to help.
Still keeping prices budget-friendly compared to language apps.
Just message me if you want to try.

Hey. I’m planning on going to Armenia later this fall. I have stamps from Azerbaijan, which I visited this summer, in my passport. Is it gonna cause any problems when entering Armenia?
I was in Azerbaijan only as a tourist.
