Popular Culture/Media/Culture No Asian actors in this year's holiday movies

It used to be a family tradition for us when our kids were young, watching Hallmark Christmas movies through the winter months. Straightforward, feel good and heartwarming (not Oscar-worthy or anything but just fun for the whole family). We got so excited when they started casting more Asian actors in the early 2020s and ultimately culminating into a few Asian-led holiday movies (of course, the story lines were down the middle stereotypes, ie Chinese restaurants but it still seemed like progress). Then with the retrenchment of the past few years, there were still a few Asian actors sprinkled among the casts but this year it doesn't seem like a single holiday movie across Hallmark, GAF, Lifetime, or Netflix has *any* Asian actors in them. Is this payback for making fun of that MJ movie? (/s). Its disappointing to see that the networks uniformly do not see a viable market enough to even cast Asians.

Questions & Discussion Just needed to share about an online interaction that happened.

So I had made a post on TikTok talking about how I was tired of certain items from my culture being stolen and being whitewashed. I’m Indian American, just to clarify.

And the post went viral. And it came with a lot of racist hate. And I mean a lot of shit that I truly did not expect. I turned the comments off soon enough, but one hate comment really really struck me even though I have been trying to process the disgusting hate I faced.

And I think from what I could gather, the commenter was Indian, like grew up in India, so probably using TikTok under a VPN whatever. And basically; I don’t remember every single word, but they questioned me if I was American first, and I said yes, but even though I grew up in America and visited india as frequently as I could growing up yk like summer breaks whatever, I still grew up in my culture because I have traditional immigrant parents. They made sure I could speak my mother tounge and that I had a general understanding of my culture as best as I could without having had grown up in India.

And the commenter was basically saying that yea because I didn’t grow up in India, it wasn’t my culture. And that I’m just a tourist and I’m just acting too woke pretending to care about something that has nothing to do with me. And it hurt so badly, I was genuinely left in shock just staring at my phone.

Like what? Am I not Indian enough all of a sudden because I grew up in America? I mean my parents immigrated because they had the belief their children could have better opportunities here. And I understand I have a privilege because of that, but it’s not like I grew up as some white washed rich nepo baby. I grew up in a middle class family that made sure I did not become white washed since the day I was born.

I mean I always struggled with my identity as an Indian American, but to be told I’m basically not Indian because I didn’t grow up in that country…it left me speechless.

Hopefully my post still makes sense because sometimes in shock I just struggle to get my feelings out and point across.

Questions & Discussion Armenian Americans

My coworker who is of Armenian heritage came up to me (East Asian), and mentioned how it was nice to know another fellow Asian in the office (very white). I went along with her, but I scratched my head a bit. It was the first time I had heard an Armenian consider herself Asian. I’m guessing it has something to do with the “Armenia is in Asia, therefore Armenians are Asian” line of thinking. Idk. What do you all think? It seems strange, since I’m from the US and view things through the lens of race, but logical if you adhere to continental plates determining boundaries (and thus groupings of peoples). I have a hard time adjusting to that, since we in the US view Asians as meaning Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, Malaysian, Laotian, and Filipino. What do you all think?

Politics & Racism After a few years abroad in Europe, it’s time to go. The racism got to me.

I’ve been abroad living in various European countries for a few years. I don’t want to give specifics where, mainly because the hate and racism is basically everywhere. But I’m leaving next month. The blatant racism and more subtle microaggressions is exhausting. I can’t do it anymore. I get it from all ages and genders. In large and capital cities too that claim to be “diverse”. The anti-Asian racism is normalized and even celebrated. It has torn me up in many ways.

I’m not posting this in any expat or travel sub because I know I’ll be attacked… “yeah but XYZ” “You’re too sensitive” “The politics are different. Those comments aren’t offensive like you think they are.” “just ignore it”

It’s tough as I saw myself making my life here. But it got hard and hard to do that dealing with horrible and closed minded people.

I guess I feel sad. Like I’m giving up. Maybe I’ll regret it. Right now though I’m TIRED of fearing to exist.

I wonder if the demonization of immigrants specifically Indian immigrants by the current administration is leading to such violent tendencies being unleashed in impressionable youth.

Politics & Racism People don’t give a fuck

I work at an R1 institution for context. A place where you can assume the vast majority of people are highly educated. A few weeks ago, somebody (non-Asian, thank god) had expressed his opinion that Asian people are not people of color during an event.

When I tell you that not a SINGLE person in the room gave a single shit about what he said or took it seriously, I mean it. Some people even agreed.

Within the first two months of starting my work at this institution, somebody on the street had yelled at me to (and I quote) “open your eyes, you fucking chink”. It took me telling this person about this instance for him to recoil and (hopefully) think about what he just said. And I could have gone on and on about the numerous and monthly instances of blatant racism I experience as an AA. This was not just a one-off event.

Whether we, as Americans, want to admit it or not, Asian Americans just like other Americans of color grow up shaped by racism. Our childhood, adult lives, and our outcomes are shaped by racism. That’s simply how it is for POC. To tell an AA that we are not POC is equivalent to telling us that our lives do not matter. If I was not a person of color, I wouldn’t even have a childhood given racism makes up about 60-70% of my earliest memories and has heavily influenced who I am as an adult.

So, the American education system doesn’t give a fuck about us given the context. White people obviously don’t give a fuck about us (I don’t have to explain this one). Other POC sadly don’t give a fuck about us. American media CLEARLY doesn’t give a fuck about us. So who actually cares? When do AA stand together as a community and declare idealogical war? I’m so sick and tired of having to fight these battles.

Questions & Discussion I’m curious what the East Asian diasporas think about other East Asians.

I’m from Korea. And there is always people in my country that dislikes China and Japan due to our history and politics. I personally met good people in both countries and I am really into their culture so I actually really like them. I always had an impression that East Asian diasporas especially those living in the western countries had more connection and solidarity than us asians living in Asia bc they have discrimination together for being Asian. But I actually saw some other Asian Americans acting hostile to other Asian groups. It makes me curious, what do you guys actually think about other East Asian diasporas?

Questions & Discussion Considering moving from Orange County, CA to Houston, TX - would appreciate opinions

I'm in late stage interviews with a company in Houston and wanted to get an idea from other Asian Americans in the area what it's like to live and raise a family out there.

My wife and I are both second gen Taiwanese Americans and were looking try to find Mandarin immersion schools and the options seem a bit limited.

For anyone who's made the move to or from Houston, any thoughts, suggestions, culture shock moments? Concerns about politics?
