Announcement What’s New in r/ArtAdvice (and What’s Next)

Happy Friday! We've been hard at work behind the scenes and are excited to share a number of updates we've rolled out to improve the community for everyone.

A Fresh Look

With a new logo and color palette, we wanted to make this space feel more recognizably "us," drawing inspiration from redline corrections seen in constructive critiques, and pairing it with a dark blue background that is easier on the eyes. (A special thanks goes out to a friend in the graphic design industry who helped make this design possible!)

Automod Update

We previously tested an Automod feature that reminded users to include context in their posts. This ended up causing confusion and was mistaken for a warning or removal message, so we've axed it. (See: "In Progress and Coming Soon" for what we're trying next.)

Crossposts

Crossposts have been disabled to keep context easily accessible without extra clicks. Since making this change, we've already seen an increase in engagement and traffic, along with less spam. Woo!

Post and User Flairs

Starting May 1st, post flairs will be required to submit a post. For now, flairs are optional to help users get used to selecting them before posting. We want to keep the subreddit organized and let users filter out content they're not interested in, especially Commissions and Pricing. (The "No Commissions Posts" option is available in the sidebar or top bar on mobile.)

Most users seem to have a solid understanding of the flairs and are applying them well. Here's a quick breakdown of what each one means:

Post Flair Description
Critique Ask what to change or how to improve.
Techniques and Tools Ask how to do something or what tools to use.
Commissions and Pricing Ask about pricing, selling, or managing commissions.
Discussion and Theory Discuss ideas, concepts, or "why" questions.
Resources and Tutorials Ask for or share learning materials.
Social Media and Growth Ask about growth or visibility.

Please keep Rule #5 "No Self-Promotion" in mind when using the Commissions and Social Media flairs.

Some of you have noticed our user flair 🧑‍🏫 Community Mentor! It's our way of celebrating users who consistently engage respectfully and help others grow through thoughtful, constructive feedback. We appreciate you helping keep r/ArtAdvice a supportive space!

So, how does someone actually earn the Community Mentor flair?

  • Provide feedback that explains what works or can be improved in an artwork.
  • Offer applicable and practical advice.
  • Be consistent in giving constructive critiques.
  • Avoid aggressive communication, and always follow the rules.

The Community Mentor flair is assigned manually by moderators. There is no formal application process, and users cannot request this flair.

Note: This flair does not mean the user is a professional artist, or that their opinions are authoritative. It also does not mean they represent the moderation team.

Have ideas for new flairs? Let us know in the comments!

Rule Updates

As previously mentioned in our Community Feedback & Suggestions announcement, our rules have been updated to better reflect the purpose of the subreddit, which is to give and receive art advice. The core principles remain the same, but they have been expanded to better address common ambiguous issues that tend to arise in Reddit communities.

In Progress and Coming Soon

  • A new subreddit banner is in progress.
  • Our community wiki is currently in the works as we await Reddit's system migration. This will become your go-to hub for information on rules, flairs, policies, resources, and more!
  • More detailed policies, especially regarding AI, will be added soon.
    • In the meantime, please refer to Rule #4 "Keep Art Human" for a quick rundown of how r/ArtAdvice handles the topic of AI.
  • We're working on implementing an Automod response triggered by keyword phrases that automatically provides a list of resources, allowing users to focus more on anecdotal or specific feedback.
  • As the sub continues to grow, we plan to reopen mod applications in the coming months. Those who are active and engage with the community will have our focus.

Community Initiatives

There's something exciting brewing in the background! Along with all these changes and updates, we're planning on:

  • Developing structured guides exclusive to our community.
  • Hosting AMAs and/or interviews with working artists to share their insight into what has or has not worked for them in their process.
  • Involve members to contribute to the community wiki to help curate a reliable set of resources.
  • Contests and giveaways to help growing artists thrive in their career or hobby. (We just need to dust off the old law book to make sure everything is in compliance before moving forward.)

We love hearing from the community, so if you have any feedback on these changes or suggestions to share, please leave a comment below or send us a message via Mod Mail!

I’ve never gotten much feedback & rarely use references, so i was wondering if there’s anything i’m not noticing is consistently “wrong” in my art. is the coloring, anatomy, bg, perspective, etc repeatedly being drawn weirdly? As of now im working on bg and objects so tips for that would be appreciated.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to digital art so I'm trying to learn the tools in Procreate but I'm having a hard time figuring out which tools were used, and how I would try and go about it.

‎Critique - No Drawover Help me achieve "atmosphere" in my art renders?

Thumbnail

My art slide 1 - credited artists in slides 2-4

I've been very very happy with my art as of late, but I feel like it's flat and lacks atmosphere. I haven't had much luck with using different colored overlays to "unify" the palette and colors, as it just always still looks flat to me, just in a different hue. I feel like there's not enough dimension or unity in my art once it comes to rendering, and I'm not sure how to achieve that.

In the next slides I include some examples of artists on Instagram I follow that do "atmosphere" in a way I really admire. I'm wondering, as in the last example, if taking a "coloring book" approach with my lineart is ruining my atmosphere: I color in every section of the lineart the "correct" color without shading, light etc taken into account, and then I try to unify it with overlays of light and shadow.

But maybe I should not be focusing so much on using the "right" colours? For example the pink in the character's skin I drew, maybe does not need to be such a uniform color.

I feel like this is a specific enough problem so I'm not too sure how to research it. That's why I turned here :) id love to hear some advice

I have been creating for years (roughly 15), and I have changed mediums, I have narrowed my focus, I have listened to good advice, I have listened to bad advice, and I have been trying for years to not only get better, but just to get noticed.

I am getting so tired of trying to get somewhere with my art, and fighting in general. I just don’t know if my art is any good anymore or if I’m just wasting my time. What do I do?

‎Critique - No Drawover Depth and Shadows

Thumbnail

I’m struggling with how to improve depth in my shadows, whenever I crosshatch it looks messy, even when done at a narrow angle and I don’t understand why the first sketch appears to have somewhat less depth than the second despite it’s simplicity. (I have also tried just compacting lines closer for darker but I find this makes the shadows look inconsistent.

No reference is provided. Focusing on hatching and line technique.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

‎Critique - Yes Drawover How is the anatomy in this drawing? (Warning: suggestive). NSFW

Also, I feel like the line art detracted a lot from the drawing. I feel like the blond guy's back looked better in the sketch.

Mind you all I asked for was "if I were to do commissions in the future what should I price them as?" And I asked not to give me art advice on my drawings so they got mad \:

I just added color for fun, not sure if it turned out good. I actually prefer the manga style without color.

‎Critique - Yes Drawover Using a male figure as a reference to draw a female one... does it look strange?

I'm terrible at anatomy, and to be honest, I don't draw with "realistic" anatomy, but I needed the money, so I accepted a very specific commission. They asked me to use this pose, but with a female character. I'm trying to replicate it, but with a different body type... and somehow it feels out of place. Any advice? 😔

‎Critique - Yes Drawover 100 days anniversary!

hi! It’s officially been 100 days since I started drawing, and this is the artwork I created to celebrate it! I’d like to ask advice about some specific things. things. First up, I’m not very confident in my clothing folds. It just doesn’t feel entirely right, but I can‘t seem to pinpoint exactly what is wrong about it and improve it. I‘ve watched some tutorials and I can draw fabric with 2 tension points or draped over a ball just fine, but translating it to clothing folds has been causing some trouble for me.

the second thing I want to ask about is the focal point. Does this artwork have a clear focal point? My concern is that the focal point might have been lost because I have high-contrast areas in separate parts of the artwork. If the artwork does have a focal point, what creates that focal point? And if it doesn’t, got some advice as to how I can fix this issue, even with this composition? Or is my composition just unsalvageable? Thanks in advance!

Is this type of rendering good for commission, or do i need improvement. I'm going for the painterly slightly messy style, not the smooth splash art style.i did this in mobile using finger.

‎‎Techniques and Tools Best budget friendly laptops?

• Upvotes

I have just started out in art uni and we have been provided with creative cloud (meaning photoshop, illustrator, the entire package).
However, my laptop is old and the storage is completely full which I believe is making photoshop lag to an unbearable degree.

Does anyone have any recommendationd on either a way of fixing this or any alternative (budget friendly) laptops that could run phoroshop more smoothly?

I’m really not good with laptops so I’m not sure if simply offloading the storage (I have been debating buying buying a physical hardrive for all my photos — which take up the majority of the storage) will fix my issue or if it’s simply the laptop itself.

For reference I have the HP 250 G9 notebook and I’m planning on using the huion kamvas 13.

Any recommendations?

‎‎Techniques and Tools How to draw teeth like Gorillaz

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I recently got into Gorillaz and it made me realise how much teeth help a character design stand out. However idk how to go about it. I am aware that i need to study teeth placement the question is moreover how to adapt that knowledge in a cartoony artstyle without it looking odd. I’m mostly inspired by the phase 1 art that managed to strike a middle between drawing each individual tooth while still being simple/not overtly detailed.

‎Critique - Yes Drawover Advice on how to approach value studies?

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Newish artist here who’s trying to drill more fundamentals. I’ve been practicing drawing from reference and more value studies but I find my proportions are always slightly off, and something about my values seems to be set up wrong. If somebody could do a quick draw over/liquify to fix and point out errors that would be cool. Also advice on how to replicate references more closely/get proportions right? I’ve already been using pencil sighting to eyeball rough proportions, but is there a specific trick to get more accurate with this method? Any advice about getting less “grainy” pencil marks would also be appreciated. I’ve been trying to apply less pressure but find it still leaves micro scratches on the paper that create an unpleasant “grainy” look.
