Megathread - Pricing Pricing Megathread Weekly

This megathread is dedicated to "how much should I charge?" type questions. Any posts of this nature outside of this thread will be removed. Please provide enough information for others to help you. here are some examples of what you could provide:

- Post your example images for sale in the comments
- Post a visual commissions price list / potential offerings in the comments

More info to post:

- Product type: (eg. Commission)
- Target audience: (eg. Young people who like fantasy art)-
- Where you are based: (eg. USA)
- Where you intend to sell: (eg. Conventions in USA and online like VGEN)-
- How long it takes you to make: (eg: 10 hours)
- Cost of sales: (eg. £20 on paint per painting)

Is this a one off piece, something you will make multiple copies of, or something a client will make multiple copies of: (eg. The client is turning it into a t-shirt and they will print 50.)

Everyone else can then reply to your top level comment with their advice or estimates for pricing.

If you post a top level comment, please try to leave feedback on somebody else’s to help them as well. It's okay if you aren't 100% certain, any information you give is helpful.

This post was requested to be a part of the sub. If you have ideas for improvements that you would like to be made to the subreddit feel free to message the mods.

Mod approved post Images are disabled in posts

Hi everyone, we had to disable images in stand-alone posts because we were being flooded with "what do I price my art at?" and "is my art good enough to sell?" posts. It is difficult to give people advice on how to price their art, and many of the comments reflected that. They were very much self-promo as well, sometimes masked by "I sold my first painting" or some such. We just aren't the subreddit for that, historically.

Many of the other image posts were really good, like the art market set ups, but sadly we were just unable to moderate the flood of the pricing/pseudo-promo posts which were taking over our subreddit.

There is a megathread for pricing but people just don't seem to use it very often, or if they do, others do not comment. I am not sure what the solution is to this.

There is another subreddit, r/ArtistAlleyConnect , where you may post your market photos. For now we are keeping this subreddit discussion based only. You may still leave photos in the comments of course!

If anyone has a solution to this let me know!

- Management

Advice [Financial] Need advice for my father, he is a 59 y/o artist.

Hello guys, first of all sorry if my english is not perfect.

I really need help and an advice for my father, he is a 59 years old artist who worked for almost 35 years as a graphic designer. Sadly, he lost his job 2 years ago, in my country is very difficult to get hired if you are old, we haven't been lucky with this situation till this day and economic problems have become very serious.

He is very depressed for all this situation and it truly breaks my heart to see him this way, that's why I'm writing this post to get some advice on how to sell his work on the internet and maybe getting him an online job (maybe fiverr?). I am putting some of his paintings here so u can recommend options based on his style.

I truly love him so much, He's such an incredible father, painter and human beign. I will always be his #1 fan.

Thank you very much in advance.

Discussion [Recommendations] What is your preferred illustration software?

I had free access to Illustrator when I was in college, and I thought it was pretty good! But that was quite a few years ago now, so I wanted to shop around a bit before signing up for a subscription myself. I’d love to know what other options are out there, and if there’s any software more suited for book illustrations?

Pricing [Financial] Comic pricing

Hi this is my first time asking something on Reddit in a while. But I was asked to be the artist for a coworkers comic. Him and I work at a dispensary, he is willing to pay me whatever my prices are. So I know he isn't low balling me. He has a comic series he's working on where each book will be released months after the first for example. But each book is only 12 pages.

I think its a good starting point, this would be my first ever comic. But I also want to charge fairly for it. I think the guy makes like 16 an hour, he's a single dad. He's a great guy. Love this guy fr. So just taking into consideration, it's not a studio or something. It's just a passion project.

I don't want to underprice myself either. My graphic design teacher recommended 50 per panel. I think that's too high. I am considering 50 per page (3-4 panels) and only 12 pages per book. So that would be around 600 per book.

I can't tell if thats too much to ask of him specifically? Or if it's reasonable. My counter point is I'm also a tattoo artist and I charge people 200+ daily for tattoos at the shop. So I feel like 600 may be reasonable? What are your thoughts?

Discussion [Recommendations] Pottery studio owners: how do people in your neighborhood find your classes?

For those running in-person pottery classes or workshops, what actually brings in new people from the surrounding area?

Have you tried printed flyers or postcards- putting them in nearby businesses, handing them out, or mailing them to local households? How did that compare with Instagram, local Facebook groups, Google, or word of mouth?

Would love to hear what you’ve actually tried and what brought bookings.

Product and Packaging [Suppliers] Custom wooden keychains?

I'd like to get custom shape and color print on wooden keychains, instead of acrylic. Preferably with an option for a white layer underneath or customisation of the edge color (so no natural wood color would show around the design).

I'd like to avoid vograce and wooacry because tarrifs and shipping costs to get these to EU are bonkers and can cost even more than the products ordered.

I've been looking on alibaba but I struggle to find something reputable and a lot of the listings have a fixed shape. Is there any supplier you can recommend for this or do I have to just get over the higher shipping cost of wooacry/vograce? Thank you!

Product and Packaging [Printing] Which are your favourite POD options for Fine Art prints and merch that are available in Canada?

I am looking to start exploring POD options for both archival fine art prints on canvases and paper, as well as smaller merch items with my artworks on them. I've been researching a lot but mostly mixed reviews about every option. Turning to good ol' reddit for some real opinions! Please and thank you!

Discussion [Discussion] What type of stickers do you think is lacking?

I’d like to start selling my art in sticker form, or maybe even keychains. What do you think is lacking or you’d wish to see more of in terms of themes for stickers.
I am a multi-fandom and creature loving artist! i’m just not sure where to start.
What are some underrated critters that need more attention?
Is your favourite game/film lacking merch of a character you love?
Or literally ANYTHING! Unpopular or not!
Don’t be afraid to comment whatever sparks your interest! And definitely give me some advice if you have any :-)

Pricing [Financial] artist alley pricing?

I plan to sell Prints (A4) , Acrylic Keychains , Acrylic standees, pins , n various odd items that are on vograce (like keycaps, plushie stuff , tapestries, body pillows, etc)
But idk how to go about pricing stuff , I usually see prints for 10-25 but idk if my arts good enough to be above 10? Literally any advice would be appreciated 😭
I was also thinking (once I finish’s them ofc) actually printing my manga into physical copies. For one of them I was gonna do a bundle with 2 manga’s (granted short ones) 3 stickers , a keychain and possibly an acrylic stand. But I’m unsure if it would be too pricey to sell? Usually I’m good at pricing stuff but I see so much variation of it in the artist alley idk what to do😭 ty for reading this:>

Discussion [Discussion] Do you pay state and federal taxes when you get commissioned?

I see a lot of artists post, begging commissions, and stuff like that. I was just wondering, do they save any of their fees to cover applicable sales taxes and federal taxes? I know I do when I sell any of my work. The state and feds remind me every quarter.

Artist Alley [Website] What is the best website builder for artists to sell their art?

To artist selling their art through their own website: What website builder do you recommend or have tried?
I want for collectors to be able to buy from the site, not have talk through the contact page
Preferably easy to build and manage (im not trying to do anything complex just clean)

Product and Packaging [Recommendations] Fine art shipping/courier companies?

What companies do you recommend for fine art shipping (ideally one for both within the EU and global sales)?

I used to ship works via 2-day DHL, but my originals now sell for a lot more money (2500-6000€ range), so I want a quality courier with insurance. Standard shipping companies don’t insure original art.

My work is small (typically A3 or less) and on paper, if that’s relevant.

Most companies I’ve found either don’t have reviews, or ask way too much info just to get a vague quote. Or, they have dropoff locations, rather than pickup (which is something I need).

Discussion [Discussion] painted Christmas ornaments

For those who sell painted ornaments during the holidays, what are you charging and is it worth it to you? I imagine the customer limit would be $20-25 regardless of the artist or style. After your time painting, supplies and packaging it’s not going to net much $. However I was thinking it would be a way for me to grow my business with an easier lower price point purchase. I’m struggling to sell my larger abstract work, which is priced at $1,000 for size 36x36 on canvas.

Discussion [Shop Setup] Have you ever made a profit selling books or publications about your art or your artistic process online?

I'm not asking about publications in partnership with art galleries, but about independent publications where you talk about your own art or your artistic process... Have you received consistent feedback on this? Do you know how it worked? where did it work?

Discussion [Discussion] I have a giant bison skull to paint. I need advice about adding uv fluorescence

So I am hopefully going to start on this bison this winter. I had the idea that I could elements that would light up with a black light. So when the lights are on it looks amazing (I hope lol) and in the dark the beads, embellishments, and details could light up. My husband thinks it's a waste of time. I don't agree but I thought it would be worth asking.

Is this an idea that will pay off?

Advice [Portfolio] Website too eclectic?

Hi everyone! Hope you're well amongst *gestures broadly.*

I (against most advice) have decided to make a multidisciplinary website/portfolio. I work in theatre and in visual art doing illustration commissions, ceramics, and murals. I'm hoping to be able to unite all of these modes of work into something cohesive, but I'd love feedback on if it's just too much (or how to streamline a bit):

Whole website: https://www.nadiyaatkinson.com

Art/design section: https://www.nadiyaatkinson.com/art

Thanks so so much!

Advice [Art Market] Can someone help me on what I’m doing wrong with my listings?

Ive been using ebay to try and sell my art for the past two months, and Ive only sold one thing for like a $1. I have multiple listings and I try and keep them updated and post new listings but i feel like im invisible. I would go to local festivals and set up a table, but i cant afford that so i feel like im in a hard place. I wanted to do etsy but they make you have to buy a shop, and i didnt want to waste money on that. I also have a tik tok art account that i post my stuff on hoping views from there would transfer to ebay but i get nothing. Help a girl out what i can do next, or where else i can sell. I don’t want to stop trying because i hate how Ai stuff has diluted the art market.

I’d appreciate any and all advice! 🖤🖤

Artist Alley [artist alley] OC artists who have sold at galaxycon/animate: how well did you do?

i’ve sold at both galaxycon and animate before, selling solely fanart. i’ve always done great at these cons. however, since then, ive stopped making fanart and have shifted my focus into creating a visual novel with my OCs.

now. just because im curious: are there any original character artists who have sold at either of these cons here, and if so, did you have any luck?

i’m not talking about crochet artists or jewelry artists or similar, but i wonder, if i were to make little merch of my oc’s…. and maybe promote my game… is it a good decision? or are these cons particularly very bad for OC artists?

i hope that makes sense!

Advice [Artist Alley] Can I use sticker paper with yellow backing?

I'm thinking of applying to an artist alley soon, and it will be my first. I don't know if the con will have a lot of visitors and consequently if I can make a profit, so I'm trying to save as much as I can on stock and setup. I saw a pack of 100 sheets of sticker paper on Amazon for a few bucks, it seemed like a good deal and I have access to a printer, so I thought I could print out and cut my own stickers even if it took some time. However, the sticker paper appears to have yellow backing. I don't know if this is an issue or not, obviously the yellow backing has no impact on the quality of the sticker, but I'm worried it will drag down the sticker aesthetics or look ugly or something. And aesthetics are pretty important for sales, from what I understand. I'm also concerned because the one and only time I went to an artist alley, all the stickers I saw and/or purchased had white backing. Anyone with experience regularly buying or selling at cons, what do you think? Should I stick to using this or abandon it to get them made professionally?
