MOD APPROVED POST ✅️ Reminders and Community Goals
Enjoy the meme, lol! Tis handmade ✨️
Hey everyone! We want to thank everyone who's participated in our community this past month for the engaging posts, thoughtful answers, and (overall) incredibly respectful conduct. It's been nice to watch the community come together so helpfully for so many people! That said, there have been a few incidents that have drawn some attention, and we wanted to go over a few things and hear input from you all.
App/Website promotion
For starters, we've had many people reaching out to our team about promoting their fishkeeping apps or websites. While we understand that you're trying to reach out to a community that will use them, we cannot endorse apps or websites on this subreddit when they are self promoted. There are a number of safety issues in doing so, and being a part of an app store does not eliminate those risks. In addition, we have to take into account that AI bots pull massive amounts of information from reddit. When it does, it may list our subreddit as a source for your application's information, which is an obvious issue as we have no way of vetting an entire app/website for it's accuracy. That could end up misleading people who trust us as a source.
Mutual Respect
A community is built on mutual respect, both of your peers and between authority figures. Reporting an automod comment is disrespectful, and downright unhelpful. If you believe an action was taken unfairly or accidentally, please message us with a link to the message and ask us why we took the action! We are more than happy to explain the reasoning behind every action we take and admit when we are wrong.
Being disrespectful towards a poster's pets, situation, and age is also becoming an increasing problem. We've also seen advice being given on legal matters and personal health. This is an aquarium subreddit. We will remove any and all comments pertaining to subjects not in that realm of knowledge. We will remove any unproductive or hateful comments. WE WILL REMOVE ANY COMMENTS THAT ARE HARRASSING MINORS. This includes but is not limited to telling them they are abusers for being unable to correct a bad situation, repeatedly suggesting options they are not financially capable of, or suggesting they start fights with parents or guardians.
Community Goals
Lastly we want to remind people of the goal of this community- for aquarists young and old, new and experienced, of nanos to monsters, to come together and share knowledge, fun moments, show off, or help each other. You've been so fantastic at this! As a mod team we want to help you feel comfortable and safe enough to share these things. We pose a question to you, if you want to answer- what are you looking for in this community? Knowing your goals can help us align the subreddit with them and grow even more.
Swim safe out there folks!

Discussion The r/aquarium wiki is now live!
After a lot of work behind the scenes, we’ve finally enabled the r/aquarium wiki!
It’s definitely still a work in progress, so don’t be surprised if you click on a link and it doesn’t go anywhere yet. Some of the pages listed on the index are planned but haven’t been published yet. The pages that are currently published are available to view and use.
We’ll be continuing to add pages and expand the wiki over time, with the goal of creating a helpful resource for both new and experienced fishkeepers.
And this is where we’d really appreciate some community input!
If you read through any of the published pages and:
- Disagree with something
- Think something needs more explanation
- Notice something we should correct
- Think we’re missing important information
- Have a topic you think should be added
Please let us know here in the comments! We want the wiki to be useful to the community, and feedback from other fishkeepers is a big part of making that happen.
You can check out the Wiki here.
There’s still plenty left to build, but we’re excited to finally have it available!

Discussion A First Look at My First Post-Larva Vampire Shrimp! I can’t believe we reached this stage at all, nevertheless at day 46! This is less than half the time recorded in the only documented successful captive-breeding project of vampire shrimp from 2013, and I have a theory about why…
It has officially happened y’all! Last night (on day 46) my first vampire shrimp larva officially morphed into a post-larva vampire shrimp! And I woke up to find at least FOUR more baby vampire shrimp that have officially made the transition as well!
I stayed up late last night watching my first vampire shrimp post larva work so hard to figure out how to use his brand-new pleopods. He was a real trooper and while he was still struggling by the time I went to bed, he definitely was not this morning. I dubbed him DJ Lock-In because I kept telling him to lock in last night when he was up against the glass struggling super hard.
Well, he did just that, because today his speed is unreal! I literally have no idea how in the world I’ll be able to catch them to move them to freshwater, but I’m here for it and all these exciting new firsts for these little filter feeding shrimp babies. 🥰
The freshwater move is the next hurdle, but I’m really excited to see this milestone! For those who aren’t aware, vampire shrimp are all wild caught and the only captive documented breeding project that any of us can find anywhere, is the 2013 report out of Germany by Sandy Brolowski and Martin Kruck. They successfully got I believe 50 baby vampire shrimp to transition to freshwater after a 3-4 month larval period.
That’s kind of where my day 46 excitement, awe, and wonder comes in because I’m now looking at possibly having these guys hopefully on freshwater in less than half of that original larval timeframe! I have several theories about the speed of these guys reaching this stage and they mostly revolve around them receiving plenty of food, especially after my tank turned green on day 31.
I’ve got so many photos and videos on my phone that I need to go through and get clipped together and documented officially so I can share more about this process, but for now, enjoy this video compilation from last night and today of my post larva baby vamps!

Help Stocking Question
This is my tank - I KNOW IT'S UGLY - that's not the point, it's the Fluval Vista 23 Gallon (87 L) - planted, AquaClear HOB Filter. I have 6 Kubotai rasboras, 6 Ember Tetras, 1 Red Cherry Shrimp, and 1 Assassin Snail, and I will have 1 Honey Gourami. My question is: do you think it would be okay to up my rasbora and tetra schools? Maybe to 8 each? More??

Help Neem oil on propagations
I could really use some help figuring this out, I had some plant cuttings that had thrips and I treated all of them with soap and neem oil, small amount of rubbing alcohol as well. The bugs are gone but I would really like to be able to put these plants in my tank again, what do I need to do to prep the cuttings to be aquarium safe again?

Discussion Do I really need a CO2 system?
My aquarium is 242 days old, holds 120 liters, and I've had a CO2 system connected to it from the very beginning. At first, I also had plants that really needed it. Unfortunately, they died anyway, and now I still have:
- Rotala rotundifolia
- Microsorum pteropus
- Cryptocoryne albida
- Hygrophila corymbosa Siamensis 53B
- Lilaeopsis brasiliensis
- Cryptocoryne crispatula
- Anubias barteri var. nana
Now for my question: Do I absolutely need the CO2 system? Or would it work just fine without it?

Help mystery growth in tank
so i’ve been trying to start my fish tank for a while and keep getting stuck with the cycling. stripped down the tank and completely started anew maybe two months ago. I got a piece of driftwood for the tank and I was about to get plants when I noticed the wood was fuzzy. I removed it from the tank, cleaned it off, and replaced it two weeks ago, just for the fuzziness to grow back!!! any idea what this is or how to deal with it??

Help First Aquarium. Looking for advice.
Hi all,
I got inspired by some YouTube videos on sealed jar ecosystems and decided to try one myself. I went with a taller column than usual to give myself some room for mistakes.
My question is about light. My local shop keeper says lighting will be insufficient, but every AI tool I've asked says the opposite — that I'm giving it too much sun and risking an algae bloom.
I'm aiming for something self-sufficient, or at worst low-tech.

Help Help
I’m cleaning and doing a water change today and notice a lot of little white bits floating around in the water column while I’m vacuuming the tank. After looking closer I’m seeing them stuck to the driftwood and plants everywhere in the tank. This is new for sure. Does anyone have any idea what it is?

Illness/Injury What's wrong with my platy?
I haven't been taking care of fish long so I'm hoping y'all can help me.
My platy's breathing through the mouth, sitting near the bottom(all my other fish are always near the top/middle), comes up to eat but goes right back- still swims normally but is preferring the bottom more than usual(he's hiding under a shell rn) Nitrates are at about 25ppm. No ammonia or nitrites and pH is fine. I have an air stone and I keep it on all the time
This is the second platy that seemingly has problems but I lost the other one. They don't look as if they are spiked, have white spots or overly red gills. But platies already have red gills so what do I know?
Tankmates are a dozen fry(fully coloured several months old), a couple platies and 3 danios.
What might be the problem? What do I do- is it flukes or something else? I appreciate any input :)
(first three pictures are from yesterday, last one is from today since my post got taken down)
edit: I have been looking at my fish and it seems that other fish have similar reddish gill spots as this guy but they aren't having trouble breathing?

Discussion How to stay loving the hobby?
Hey,
Sooo... I have a 30ish litre aquarium and I am setting up another slightly smaller tank. I keep shrimp, ember tetras and a few halfbeaks. My first issue came with water parametres and general set up and keeping plants alive. I got that sorted and got my embers, then one day they got sick and started dying rapidly. I thought I treated the tank and got my halfbeaks and some more embers but the embers started dying again, I treated again and I have 2 very healthy vibrant survivors.
NowI think I have some sort of nymph which is disgusting and I don't even know where they came from nor how absolutely giant they got. I got home today and there were so many in my dark tank. I am going to set up a trap and also try siphon/trap/capture them but I think they killed my shrimp.
So I guess my question is how you guys stay in the hobby because I'm feeling so unbelievably awful. Like I've failed even though I feel I do all the research needed. I feel like I try so hard to do everything right but then something happens. I also fell in love with these beautiful shrimp that may have died.
Does it get better?

Plants Best carpeting plants for a first timer?
Really wanting to get a carpeting plant for my new 10 gallon. Been looking at Monte Carlo, dwarf hair grass, and even some types of moss.
Will likely be dry starting, and then will probably have to get CO2 since that’s the general online consensus I’ve seen. Any recommendations?
