The problem with cleaning up an iPhone gallery

• Most of us don't notice how much unnecessary media we've collected until the iPhone starts warning us about low storage.
• You might have 20,000 photos, hundreds of videos, screenshots from years ago, and multiple pictures of the same moment.
• The frustrating part isn't finding the Photos app. It's figuring out what you can safely remove.
• You don't want to spend an entire weekend comparing photos, and you certainly don't want to accidentally delete a memory you care about.

That's the problem we wanted SpaceFresh to help solve.

1. Similar photos: When you take 10 pictures but only need 2

• Imagine taking several photos of your family, pets, or a sunset. The pictures aren't exact duplicates. Someone might be smiling in one, blinking in another, or the camera angle might be slightly different.
• Apple's built-in duplicate detection doesn't necessarily solve this problem because these are different photographs.
• SpaceFresh analyzes visual similarity and groups related photos together so you can compare them without searching through your entire gallery.
• It also suggests a best shot to make reviewing easier.
• You still make the final decision about what to keep. We don't believe a cleaner should automatically delete photos simply because they look alike.

2. Duplicate photos: Stop storing unnecessary copies

• Photos can accumulate through saving, downloading, sharing, and editing.
• Over time, you may end up with multiple copies of the same picture without realizing it.
• SpaceFresh identifies duplicate photos and brings them together for review, so you can remove unnecessary copies without manually hunting for them.

3. Video optimization: Keep the memory, reduce the storage problem

• Videos are often the biggest storage consumers on an iPhone.
• A few long recordings can take up more space than thousands of photos. But deleting a family video or an important recording isn't always an option.
• SpaceFresh includes video optimization tools to help manage storage-heavy videos, so you can review your options instead of immediately deleting something valuable.

4. Swipe Clean: For photos that aren't duplicates but still need cleaning

• Not everything taking up space is a duplicate.
• Sometimes it's an old restaurant menu, a random picture, a photo of a parking spot, or something you saved months ago and never needed again.
• Finding those pictures through similarity detection alone isn't enough.
• That's why we built Swipe Clean.
• You can review your photos one at a time, swipe right to keep them or left to mark them for removal.
• It's a much simpler way to go through ordinary photos without constantly opening and closing pictures.

5. Eight cleanup categories: Because storage problems aren't all the same

• We didn't want to build a cleaner that only finds duplicate photos.
• SpaceFresh organizes cleanup opportunities across eight categories, covering things such as similar photos, duplicate media, screenshots, large videos, screen recordings, and blurry photos.
• For example, screenshots are useful when you take them, but many become irrelevant after a few days. Screen recordings can be even worse because a recording you made to explain something once might still be occupying hundreds of megabytes months later.
• Having these items organized separately makes it easier to decide where to start cleaning instead of searching through everything manually.

6. Fast scanning: Approximately 10,000 assets in 4–5 minutes

• This was one of our biggest development priorities.
• Finding similar photos across a large library requires more work than simply listing files by name or size.
• We spent considerable time optimizing the scanning process because nobody wants to wait forever just to find out what can be cleaned.
• In our testing, SpaceFresh scanned approximately 10,000 photo and video assets in 4–5 minutes.
• Actual times will vary depending on the iPhone, the library, and the media being analyzed.
• We also designed the scanning experience so you aren't stuck staring at a loading screen. You can continue navigating the app while scanning progresses, and newly added media can be detected without starting the entire process from scratch.
