Having played the 6 available episodes of SuperFails, i have some thoughts. It's a long one, spoilers ahead duh...
Let us get the obvious out of the way: yes it's a comedy, yes it's not supposed to be serious, yes it's called Superfails ofc it'll be cringe. I know. I'm painfully aware of AWH's recent writing approaches. But even then, this story is just inexcusable lvls of godawful.
People also have mentioned that it's largely based on Invincible, i haven't watched it, i can't comment. But who here is genuinely surprised AWH ripped off yet another existing series instead of coming up with something original. All that subscription money must be used to pay off lawyers because they're sure as shit not buying licensing rights.
------------------------THE MC.
Once again we play as a dimwit of barely legal age who has absolutely nothing going for her. She's so average, you guys, can't even wake up on time for classes teehee. Frankly, i'm tired. Tired of the idiotic plot being justified by 'well mc's young/inexperienced, ofc she'll do dumb shit'. Tired of mc not having the brain capacity to draw simple obvious conclusions. Tired of mc knowing nothing, being unable to do anything, and just standing there dumbly hoping for some guy to come save her.
I am infinitely frustrated that in the year of our lord 2026 romance game writers still have not learned to write anything better than dumb useless fem mcs.
SO what do we have in the end:
-mc is a very average student;
-can't wake up on time for classes (and her family won't wake her up either despite her apparent struggle with it, they just pat her on the back and encourage her to keep on keeping on, dont we all want parents like that, eh?);
-can't keep track of her school responsibilities ('omG i nEEd To hAnD in My EssAy that i was given an extra week for, but i totally forgot, busy as i was partying and drinking, better go hide in the basement');
-has no powers, and once she gets them, has no control over them.
Great start.
The powers, sigh... now lets be all real here for a moment. The only reason mc has cloning powers is for romance/sex scene shenanigans. That's it. That's all the thought process that went into it. More so when we are told mc can feel her other clones. More so when these clones can be honest about their feelings and 'do what mc herself wanted to do, if only she wasn't such a shy uwu girl'. OFC.
Most of the romance scenes are, as expected, driven almost exclusively by mc's foolishness/ clumsiness/ other inadequacies. Slips on the floor so a guy has to catch her. Stands under a falling sign so a guy has to save her. Gets drunk so a guy has to rescue her from a harasser. AccIdEntAlLy puts Viagra in a guy's tea then proceeds to stare at his d. Actively goes after a dude that told her to f off then gets mad he won't be nice to her amazing self when she won't leave him alone.
Love it.
Far as the stats, i'm not a fan of how Hype works. First of all i wish there were 2 stats: anonymity vs hype, because why is being popular the endgame here? Why can't we want to keep away from the camera without it being viewed by the game as the wrong choice? Mc didn't seem like a particularly attention seeking person?
And more importantly why is it a stat at all. You want to tell me that mc, being the daughter of one of the most famous heroes isn't already by association famous in her own right? That they don't know who she is, where she is, don't keep track of all the questionable things she does that bring disgrace to the family? That the rich kid who propositions all chicks didn't look at her until now? Cmon be real.
---------------------------------The love interests... BOI.
Sky: i confess i found her the most annoying character so far aside from mc. The hero team feels like kindergarten daycare and it's like 75% because of her. Very unserious character that makes this unserious cringe story even more cringe. Doesn't help that she always yaps and won't shut up. Doesn't help that her yapping has 0 charm. She's written like a joke, hell they even gave her an unironic fear of clowns, what more is there to say here??
And that introductory scene of 'i want the croissant' / 'no, i want it, i saw it first' / 'ok lets just share it and be friends'.......... what is this??????
Alan: now here's my beef with this guy. He, being the immortal centuries old being, comes with the trope of age gap. And the question thus is: what is it that this ancient fossil finds in mc, specifically, with her 0 brains 0 skills 0 anything else stats. What can she offer him in this relationship other than sex with clones. Ah no my bad, how could i forget, he thinks she's the moSt inTeReStiNg pheNoMenOn he's EvEr coME acRoSs. Not her mother from another planet. Not anything else he saw in his gazillion years on earth. HER. OFC.
Frustratingly we yet again get a relationship where mc is a baby that needs to be taught the ways of the world by the old wise experienced man, and be in a rel where she'll never be his equal... truly never has this been done before, and here we are again.
And where do i even go with the whole Viagra debacle.
Miles: he's fine i guess? He's some bloke, who most likely has superpowers of his own that he hides from mc, and feeling for mc that he also hides from mc.
Zane: now he is the most interesting char to me so far for the potential that his setup has. He has destructive powers that he hates and lives in constant fear of losing control and inflicting irreparable damage on those he loves. Cool. Too bad he's stuck in this story, that won't take anything seriously, and certainly won't approach his issue with any kind of understanding. To have the narrative, the mc and every other character basically hit him over the head with 'why are you ruining the mood bro, just get over it' is, i'm sure, very helpful. 11/10 guys, he is now cured.
I also found him to be the most relatable, solely based on the fact he had no desire to be on the team and take part in this circus. And honestly me too, dude, me too.
Jace: his joker cosplay aside.. what a joke of a character. As if the story was lacking in those.
What exactly am i supposed to take away from his super deep monologue of 'aren't you tired of the rules, debt, obligation and bling obedience to fbi' .... and he directs that at mc. MC OF ALL PEOPLE. A chick who has lived a life of privilege and wealth, with a loving and understanding family that allows her to do anything? A chick who is 1st day on the job and has no understanding of how fbi works and no real beef with them?
"Join me and it'll be a world of you, your clones and me walking besides you".. to what end? What does mc really gain from joining him and why would she be interested in dismantling a system that has benefited her all her life. But what am i saying, looking for logic in a story where the logic boils down to 'but he's hot and i want his dick'. Bleh.
---------------------------
The world setup is.. questionable, as is the plot as a whole. Big shock.
So in a world full of super heroes all we have is one group of 6 people doing everything? There is.. no backup? No additional groups? No heroes in training? No nothing? But we do have a whole ass prison of villains that constantly have to be kept in check. Makes sense, ofc.
And so the FBI, in their moment of genius, decide to recruit total noobs from the street who have no training, no control over their powers, no loyalty, who are as much a liability as the villains they'd be fighting. Makes sense, ofc.
And it's not mc's mother who's behind all this, ofc.
---------------------------
In the end... look, again, i'm not surprised that this story is what it is. AWH clearly decided to go down the route of mindless plot as mere background noise for the real money maker - the sex scenes. It shows in all of their recent stories. And i don't mind the hoeing around, i enjoy the love triangles, the jealousy, the messiness of it all. But it stops being fun when it's the only thing you get with an mc you can barely tolerate all wrapped in layers of AI.
And where do i even begin with their ai usage this time around...... UNSKIPPABLE at that.
