Playing catch up

• Upvotes

I see I'm very late to the game but here are some thoughts on a few AR offerings I have recently seen.

Seminar

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiQlRSVmxa8

For some reason the default subtitles here are in Russian, but that can be fixed in the settings. The quality of this production on youtube is pretty bad--seems like a bootlegged copy. Not much to say except I really enjoyed this play. I also appreciate the fact that AR was still interested in doing theatre after Hollywood success. I don't think finances were a concern--he just loved acting and it's a good script.

Someone in the comments said they brought their two little kids to this backstage autograph signing, (due to Snape), and Rickman asked if they all came for the play or just the signing. It was just the signing. AR said something like Thank Goodness. I concur.

Something the Lord Made

This could be a controversial movie, not so much anymore for its unblinking look at racism in the WW2 era, which these days is widely condemned, but for the experiments in medical research done on dogs. Having dated a medical student way back in my day I had to personally come to grips with this practice long ago. It's a hard watch for several reasons.

I'm not up for a PETA argument, but I do want to say that this is an important movie. It's a solid, well acted and well-made movie and I applaud AR for taking on the role of the imperious doctor. It is a painful slice of life I hope people continue to find.

Playing the baddie has its rewards if said baddie has say, Hans Gruber charm, but this Dr. Baddie had nothing but intelligence and persistence to admire. His grating personality completely occluded any pleasant physical resemblance to Alan Rickman. The attention all flows toward the doctor's ill-treated, go-to-the-back-of-the-bus assistant Vivien Thomas, and I admire AR's willingness to play a role that probably didn't accrue him many fans. It's all about how things really were and it's worth being reminded of on occasion.

Song of Lunch

Never seen anything like this before. Watch it with a glass of whine, I mean wine. Just one though. Rickman plays a struggling writer meeting up with an ex-lover. What a sardonic sad sack he is in this. But I still think Emma Thompson's character lost out because I've developed a huge predetermined unsupportable bias. I enjoyed it.

Dust

Seven minutes of WTF? Interesting, but for me it's a no on several levels.

Anyway, I'm sure you've all been there, done that, but I thought I'd share my moments of "catch up". Feel free to push back.

A new ‘low’ for the fandom

Can we please STOP the disrespectful posts on social media about Alan and Rima. A couple of days ago some ‘fan’ posted on TikTok a supposed photo of (this is so appalling) Alan’s ‘ashes’ around a tree. She has titled it ‘Our beautiful Alan’s ashes’ and is claiming the photo was taken by Alan’s friend Dexter Fletcher “who took some of his ashes to a special place for both of them.” Dexter Fletcher has (of course) NEVER posted any photos of Alan’s ‘ashes’. The whole thing is so obviously fake, but the fact that someone thinks it’s perfectly acceptable to do this in the first place is just disgusting. She has been criticized heavily for doing this and has been asked to remove the post, but is just ignoring the comments. Honestly this fandom is just getting worse and it saddens and depresses me that so many people don’t have the decency, respect or maturity to just honor Alan appropriately. I know TikTok particularly is a cesspit of horrible AI videos using Alan’s face in vomit inducing sexual scenarios which is bad enough, but this is just as bad quite frankly. And no, I’m not ‘overreacting’ 🙄

UPDATE: The appalling post on TikTok has finally been deleted.

Pancreatic Cancer UK Double Donation Event

Hi all,

As you’re likely aware, Alan Rickman’s wife, Rima Horton, is an ambassador and trustee for Pancreatic Cancer UK. Alan died aged 69 of pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers and late diagnosis is common.

The charity is currently running an event at the moment where they double your donation. International/ non-UK donations work (I’ve just donated from Ireland).

FYI: Donations can also be dedicated to someone. I’ve just donated in dedication to Mr. Rickman. I’ve included the link.

Alan’s Radio Plays/Productions

Hello All, massive Alan fan from way back I don’t post much as I tend to shy away from social media. I am currently hunting down any recordings he did pre Die Hard for BBC radio plays etc.

I have found :

The Contemplative Life
A Good Man In Africa
A Trick to Catch An Old One
Rope
One with African Folktales

I’ve researched and there are plenty more - just wondering has anyone tracked any down?

I have been trying to locate Gridlock with no success.

Gridlock by Nigel Gearing — Alan Rickman as Charles, Anna Nygh as Carrie, directed by Cherry Cookson. Carrie and Charles meet once a year in a hotel bedroom to consummate their friendship and love, and this particular meeting brings a surprise. It was first broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in May 1985 and repeated on 23 February 1986.

Interviews theatre

I know there's many interviews where Mr Rickman goes into his film work, but does anyone know if there are any where he discusses his work in the theatre at length, either directing or acting himself?

Help with finding where to watch a few movies?

I've wanted to watch some of his stuff recently and made a list of films I haven't seen yet, I was able to fine all but two. "An Awfully Big Adventure" and "Truly, Madly, Deeply". I've checked online and with libraries near me but I can't find either anywhere.

Truly, Madly Deeply--just saw it.

How have I never seen this film before? What a thoughtful, uplifting and sweet experience. I'm feeling very jaded with modern movies, and I couple of nights ago I run across this oldie.

I've seen Alan Rickman in a few things and he was on my radar somewhat. That voice! But he wasn't even using That Voice in this movie and he still hits it out of the park.

Journaling

So, ironically I've started writing more since reading his diaries. He carried pocket diaries, right? I've seen photos of them. Sleek little black books, usually. Does anyone know the brand and if they're still in production? The only pocket-sized books I can find locally to carry with me are frilly little decorative address and schedule books 🫠🙃 so I'm willing to buy something online instead but I was curious about what he used specifically, if anyone happens to know

Just came across this gem on Disney Plus. An 8 minute short film narrated by Alan. I hadn't known about it before even though I consider myself well informed on Alan's work 😅 so I thought I'd share if anyone else had missed this until now. ❤️

Do you think he would be disappointed in me after 10 years without him if I found a new favorite actor whom I love almost as much as him? 🥺🥺

He said that he had known actors and friends whose lives and careers had been badly affected by facial injury and disease. He understood how profoundly a facial condition can affect speech, eating, appearance, employment, confidence and social life.

The Alan Rickman Professorship of Facial Surgery campaign was launched to help surgeons research better ways to treat patients with Head and Neck Cancer, Facial Injury and Disfigurement.

The fundraising campaign is still trying to reach the £5 million endowment needed to make the professorship permanent. The current campaign reports £78,504 raised.

Alan Rickman goes full Rasputin on a Bully

Sir Ian McKellen recalls "On my first day before the camera, he didn’t like the patronising, bullying tone of a note which the director gave me. Alan, seeing I was a little crestfallen, delivered a quiet, concise resumé of my career and loudly demanded that the director up his game." (The Guardian, 15 Jan 2016)

Alan Rickman and Friends fight to Preserve the Rose Theater: in 1988, the remains of an Elizabethan period playhouse was discovered after the demolition of a 50's office block in Southwark London. On May 14, 1989 people assembled on Park Street to protect the site.

Actors included Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Ralph Fiennes, Dustin Hoffman, Timothy Dalton, Alan Rickman and Sir Lawrence Olivier, who spoke in support to save the site.

The result: the office block was redesigned to preserve the site to allow it to be fully excavated in the future.
