I've had a job offer in Al Ain and I'm trying to get a realistic picture before we decide. We're a family of 5 (3 kids primary achool) currently living in the UK.

The package is 90k AED a month with family medical insurance, but no housing, schooling or flight allowance. Our big fixed costs would be:

I'm planning to supporting family abroad: around 12k a month

A few questions for anyone living there:

1. Is that comfortable for a family in Al Ain, or are there costs I'm likely to underestimate? Summer electricity bills, kids' activities, car costs, a nanny or housemaid?

2. Is 150k realistic for a decent villa, and which areas would you recommend? I've seen Al Jimi, Zakher, Al Towayya and Falaj Hazza mentioned, but I'd love to hear what people actually like or avoid.

3. Is there a British or Western expat community in Al Ain? Where do British families tend to live, and are there groups, clubs or social circles worth knowing about?

4. Which British-curriculum schools would you recommend, and how hard is it to get places mid-year?
