You'll find a lot of answers to basic questions about BMT or enlisting in the AF here: http://afbmt.com/ and in the BMT FAQ

We don't know the answers to your obscure medical questions. We aren't doctors. Don't trust medical advice given by strangers on the Internet. Getting anecdotal information from other people that may or may not have a similar diagnosis or condition to you will not help you in any way. Everyone's medical situation is different.

Marijuana usage is not disqualifying. Just be honest about any usage.

No, we don't know what jobs are available at any given time, or your chances of getting said job, or how long it will take for you to get the job, or how long it'll take for you to get to basic training or OTS.

Yes, some recruiters are lazy. Keep hounding them or find another recruiter.

Being a pilot is hard. Most of them come from the Air Force Academy, then ROTC. Very few slots available for OTS. Highly competitive.

Instructions for how to receive "Verified USAF Member" flair in /r/AirForceRecruits

As I say there, if you're not comfortable sending an email from your work account, let me know what you'd like to do and we can possibly work out another way.

I will just add the flair and then delete the email, but I understand not wanting me to know who you are. Especially if you're an awful person that says awful things in other subreddits. :)

Let me know if you have ideas for other flair types or anything else!

Recruiter/process question Is this normal?

• Upvotes

Is this “normal”

I’m prior USAF and my son is trying to join and wanting to know if this is “normal”?

Son: 18M, 6’, 160 lbs, Eagle Scout.

Went to MEPS in May. 82 on ASVAB. Joined DEP. Recruiter called and congratulated him the next day. And that is the last time he’s really heard from the recruiter. There was one DEP PT session in September, October was cancelled. But outside of that nothing. Son has called and texted and nothing. No job list, no info, no anything. He got email to sign up for Air Force Connect app, but other than his personal info not seeing any ASVAB scores or anything like has been posted in here.

During the September PT session, he asked the recruiter about jobs and what is going on. Son said the recruiter looked on his computer and said he’s good on everything and that was the end of it.

Is this the “new normal”? Should he doing something else?

Not going to give the exact location, but we are located in Georgia.

General Advice Enlisted is not a dead end for the cockpit. My road from F-16 avionics to a pilot slot

I enlisted first. F-16 avionics, made E-6, and spent a few years as an assistant dedicated crew chief on the Thunderbirds. Somewhere in there I decided I wanted to be in the jet, not under it.

If you're shipping out soon and flying is the dream, here is what the road actually looks like from the enlisted side:

You need a degree. Mine was finished while I was in, using tuition assistance. No degree, no commission, full stop.

Then comes the AFOQT, the first scored gate. Took it once in Nov 2022: Pilot 98, CSO 94, ABM 99. You get three attempts max, at least 90 days apart, and super score keeps your best sections, so prepare like attempt one is the only one.

After that it's the TBAS and your PCSM score. Flight hours raise the PCSM, up to 60 hours. Here is the money-saving part most people miss: hours in an FAA-approved simulator count the same as airplane hours if they are logged in your log book with a CFI signature. That is exactly what mine were, 41 hours of instructor-logged sim time, a lot cheaper than renting a plane.

Selected for pilot on my first attempt. Now I'm a KC-135 pilot.

Nobody handed me a map for any of this. I had to piece it together from other people's posts, which is why I'm writing this one. If you're enlisted or about to be and the cockpit is the goal, it is a long road, but it is a real one.

Happy to answer anything about the process.

Jobs Creating Job List

I (25F) just went to MEPS for the Air Force and took my ASVAB, and I’m really happy with my result, I got an 88 overall. I had a bad cold so I wasn’t able to get my physical done but I’m trying to get a job list narrowed down based on my scores alone. My top two jobs right now are Public Affairs and Mental Health Services, are those good/realistic jobs, any others I should add to my list?

General Advice Graduating with my Bachelor’s in December – Considering Air Force Cyber. ASVAB or PiCAT?

What's up everyone!

I'm graduating with my bachelor's this December and thinking about joining the Air Force, hopefully landing something in cyber.

I'm pretty new to the whole military process and trying to figure out whether I should take the ASVAB or PiCAT. I've heard PiCAT is more chill since you can take it at home, but I'm curious about the verification test afterward.

For those who've taken either one, which would you recommend? How hard was the math section, and what did you guys use to study? Also, what scores should I be aiming for if I want to get into cyber?

I'm also looking into the Air Force Reserve. Since I'll already have my bachelor's, I'm debating whether to enlist first or try going the officer route.

Would love to hear from anyone who's been through this, especially people in cyber. Any tips or advice would be awesome. Appreciate y'all!

Medical Seeking Military Advice

I, 25 F, had spoken with a Space Force recruiter about wanting to join up. I have a HS Diploma, AA in Accounting, and BA in HRM. The recruiter had told me that I was already disqualified from signing up due to my Anxiety and for the fact that it was prescribed medication. I had only taken the medication a week when it was given, then stopped afterwards. It's currently been 6 months without the medication.

Is there any possibility that a medical waiver can be given? Am I going to need to wait the 3 years regardless? Or are my chances at enlisting out the window for good?

General Advice Do I have to go to recruit calls if I’m not in DEP?

Hello, I was supposed to go to MEPS last week, but I was sick and had to reschedule for two weeks from now. My recruiter sent out a mass text to me and approximately 17 other people about a recruit call. Unfortunately I do not have child care the two days he has asked for people to show up. My question is do I have to go if I’m not in DEP yet? Should I go? Will this affect my future MEPS appointment or anything? Thanks in advance

General Advice Reached out to recruiting officer via call / email. No response.

Been about 4 weeks since I reached out to the nearest air force recruiter (in another city) via phone and email. No response yet. Is it normal to not get a response for weeks or do I need to call / email again?

Recruiter/process question Should I join the air force

Hello I’m 18 years old and I’m considering joining the Air Force for 4 years. I wanna have a career in law-enforcement and I was considering security forces. I currently work as a shift lead at papa John’s and my family is telling me to stay there but I don’t wanna pursue a career in pizza. I would go to college or a trade school but I really can’t afford it. I have no prior medical history or problems and I have a clean record. Should I join the air-force or wait for a while?

Recruiter/process question What is EDPT test and does it determine my fate in terms of specializing in IT?

Hello y’all. I passed my ASVAB but I was told that I have to take the EDPT test as well which will determine the cyber careers I get. I worked as a contractor with the Army and Air Force both CONUS and OCONUS and have a very strong lineup of professional certifications as well as a strong experience background. I was confident that with these certs, experience & IT knowledge, I would easily get an IT job in the Air Force, however, I was told that the EDPT will determine if I get into Cyber or not. Is this true? And is there any way to prepare for it? Would appreciate any tips. Thank you!

Jobs How does the list work?

Im thinking about joining but I don’t know how the list works?
Is it just pick some jobs and hope for the best?
And are you allowed to pick 1 realistic job and 10 ultra rare jobs or how does that go?

Recruiter/process question Top Security Clearance

Hello. So I am planning to get in the Air Force since I was told it was the best branch. But still open to other branches if they are better. I am from Cameroon, and wants to do Cyber security in the the Air Force. I learn I need to be a citizen and get a top security clearance. Which is fine. However, my parents and siblings are all caneroonians, my parents live in Cameroon, my siblings live in Canada and Germany. None of them have affinities with the government, military or police. My mother is a market vendor and my father has a beer store. I’m pretty intelligent so I know I will get the required asvab score with some preparation to be eligible to do cybersecurity.

  1. So my question is, with my situation, can anyone know, if I am clean, then can I get the TS/SCI after investigation or is it a lost cause because of relatives being cameroonians?

  2. My second question is, having read a lot of people waiting close to a year or even more than a year to get a top security clearance, let’s say I get in the air force or Navy, sign contract for cyber, and complete basic training after 2 months and then it’s time to go to school training for cyber but top security clearance is still not completed, what happens then? Will they still send me to school with an interim clearance while I wait or will I be in limbo not knowing what to do? Or will they reassign me to another field?

Medical What are my chances?

I got 95 on my Asvab, and did really well with my physical tests (they were specially impressed that I got perfect hearing with all zeroes). But the CMO disqualified me because he found one doctor's visit where I "complained" about chest pain, migranes, and dizziness.

The thing is, I don't have a history of any of those. My wife pushed me to do this visit after I got tired quickly after running (I've been working from home and not exercising for 6 years).

I got my doctor to write a letter explaining that I am in perfect health, that those were my wife's concerns, and attaching perfect test results from the time.

My recruiter sent the documents back to MEPS and he is hoping that the CMO would clear me without having to go through the waiver process.

What are the chances of the CMO clearing me? And how long would I have to wait for a waiver otherwise?

BMT Question about exodus following BMT

Hello everyone, I’m shipping out for BMT November 2nd, my projected graduation date is December 23rd and after that I’m going to Monterey to be a crypto linguist (1N3X1). However, DLI will be on exodus when I get there. Will I have the opportunity to visit home during this time or will I have to just stay there and wait til it’s over? My recruiter recommended asking an MTL when I arrive for basic but I have a feeling I’ll get made fun of for asking 😭 I thought it would be worth asking here. Has anyone experienced something similar after BMT graduation? Thanks!
