🔔 Announcement Welcome to r/AceAttorney! — A new FAQ, updates to the subreddit, and more resources.
Hi everyone!
After lots of community feedback, we’ve recently updated our subreddit’s guidelines and did some general upkeep to the presentation. With that, we’re also posting a new FAQ to go along with it!
You’ve probably noticed some of the changes already, but here’s a quick rundown on the most important ones:
- The sidebar has been rewritten to be more clear and concise, with rules categorized by topics (discussion, art, etc.) so it’s easier to check whichever one applies to your posts.
- Rules are now more lenient on memes and jokes. We’ve lightened the threshold of what’s considered “low-effort” and further specified what kind of content is encouraged.
- Rules are now more strict on tier lists. The “Tuesdays-only” rule remains, but we’ve also made it so tier lists are only acceptable as a complement to actual analysis or discussion.
- We’ve updated the flairs to be more visually intuitive, and added flairs relating to humor and fan-created content other than illustrations, like music covers or handicrafts.
- Original fanart posted on the subreddit will be highlighted on the sidebar! We’ll be updating the rotation from time to time, with proper credits and links to the original posts (this is done manually and only allows 10 images at a time, so please bear with us).
With all that explained, here’s the new FAQ, this time reformatted for easier readability!

Play Order and Availability
Make sure to check our Recommended Play Order Chart! This includes info on mainline vs. spin-off games and platform availability. All games are currently available on PC and consoles via collection remasters, with the sole exception of the "Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright" crossover.
Any game is worth playing if you’re interested in the series. No game so far has been considered bad by general fandom opinion, and questions of “is this game worth it” are always unanimously answered with “yes”. Just go for it!
You might see the term “filler case” thrown around, but it's not recommended at all to skip any episodes within a game.
Game and Episode Abbreviations
The Ace Attorney fandom uses numbers as shorthand for game episodes. For example, 5-3 means "game 5, episode 3". This would be "Turnabout Academy" from Dual Destinies.
For spin-off games, fans usually specify the subseries before the code. For example, AAI2-4 or I2-4 would be "Investigations 2, episode 4". On a related note, some common abbreviations are:
- AAI: "Ace Attorney Investigations" subseries.
- TGAA: "The Great Ace Attorney" subseries (DGS for "Dai Gyakuten Saiban" is also used).
- PW:AA: "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney" (the 1st mainline game).
- AJ:AA: "Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney" (the 4th mainline game).
- VS: "Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright" (a crossover spin-off).
- The rest of the individual games are abbreviated per their subtitle (i.e. T&T for "Trials and Tribulations", SoJ for "Spirit of Justice", and so forth).
Special Episode Order
Dual Destinies's Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed, can be played after beating the main game as a bonus, but is often recommended to be played chronologically instead. This would be right after Episode 2: The Monstrous Turnabout.
Spirit of Justice's Special Episode: Turnabout Time Traveler, should be played after beating the main game, which is also its chronological placement. This would be right after Episode 5: Turnabout Revolution.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles features eight "Escapade" mini-episodes available under "Special Contents". These should be played at any point after beating the first game in the collection (The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures).
The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve, used to have two Special Episodes back in its Japan-only release on Nintendo 3DS, which are not included in the current release on modern platforms. You can watch a read-along-style fan-translation here (currently, this is the only format both episodes have been made fully available in English). These are best enjoyed after beating the main game.
Character Name Discrepancies
The 2011 game “Ace Attorney Investigations 2” went unreleased in the west for over a decade, and it was only playable in English through a fan-translation patch until an official translation was released in 2024.
Each translation localized the characters’ names differently. Due to the fan-translation’s popularity and longevity, some fans still use the character names from it. Key differences include:
- Eustace Winner (official) / Sebastian Debeste (fan-translation)
- Verity Gavèlle (official) / Justine Courtney (fan-translation)
- Eddie Fender (official) / Raymond Shields (fan-translation)
“The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles” features fictional detective Sherlock Holmes as part of its main cast. When these games were localized into English, the character’s name was changed to Herlock Sholmes, presumably to avoid legal issues with the Conan Doyle State, who retains partial ownership of the character.
The change was well received due to its humoristic nature, but both names are still used interchangeably amongst the fanbase.

Soft-Locked in a Game
The only known way to get soft-locked in Ace Attorney is to save the game right after making a choice that's about to grant you a Game Over.
If you believe to be soft-locked during an investigation or cross-examination, try going through a walkthrough and make sure you haven't missed any details.
If you saved your game during an imminent "Game Over" dialogue branch, you'll have to choose the "Episode Select" and/or "Chapter Select" menu from the title screen to restart the specific segment you were playing. This is available on all current-platform collections, but some older releases do not have this feature and you will have to restart the entire episode instead.
Framerate on 3D Games
For reasons unknown, both "Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy" and "The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles" are designed and capped to run at 30fps.
You may force these games to run at 60fps on PC by searching and installing community mods via their Steam pages (here for AJ:AAT, and here for TGAAC). Keep in mind mods are unofficial and thus not guaranteed to work properly.
Jagged Graphics on “Apollo Justice”
The version of "Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney" available on modern platforms has image scaling issues when playing on non-1080p displays. Here are some known workarounds:
- For PC Steam and Steam Deck users, open the game in your library, click the Options icon on the top-right corner, select "Properties" and set "Game Resolution" to 1920x1080 (if this option is missing for you, you might have to change your own monitor's resolution). Then launch the game, go into the in-game's Options menu, scroll down to "PC Config" and set "Resolution" to 1920x1080.
- For Nintendo Switch 2 handheld users, go into the console's System Settings from the HOME Menu, scroll down to "System", select "Nintendo Switch Software Handling" and activate "Handheld Mode Boost". Then launch the game.
- Sadly, there are no other currently known fixes. As other fans have done, you can submit a request to Capcom to complain about this issue and increase the odds of them eventually addressing it.

Over the years, there have been frequent conversations around the same topics in r/AceAttorney and the fanbase in general. If you’re interested in other fans’ opinions, we’ve summarized and compiled some previous threads so you can read up on the following:
What do we know about Ace Attorney 7?
In November 2020, a massive Capcom leak revealed an internal roadmap indicating “Ace Attorney 7” to be in production, with a projected release for Q3 2021. Unlike other Ace Attorney projects also leaked through the roadmap, this never came to fruition.
In December 2023, the Apollo Justice Trilogy producer claimed in an interview that “Ace Attorney will not be stopping as a series”. In May 2026, Capcom’s Earnings Report mentioned Ace Attorney as one of several “leading brands” they plan to expand. Any mention of new video games as part of this strategy was made by grouping all of these brands together, without clear specifications.
In summary, “Ace Attorney 7” has never been officially confirmed by Capcom, and the leak from 2020 is the only tell that concrete plans for it existed at some point. Still, Capcom does consider Ace Attorney to be a valuable brand they wish to nurture as of 2026, which many fans take as indication that a new game is likely to happen at some point, despite being long overdue already.

What do people think about Turnabout Big Top (2-3)?
This is the most controversial episode in the series, particularly due to featuring a love triangle between multiple adult men and an underage girl as part of its narrative. Fans unanimously agree that this is detrimental, but some people also question the leaps of logic within the mystery, or argue that the characters in general feel obnoxious.
Director Shu Takumi notoriously wrote most of Justice for All while drunk on whiskey. The later anime adaptation (with Takumi himself serving as script supervisor) completely removes the “love triangle” aspect and is overall considered a very big improvement.

What’s up with characters like Hotti or Sal Manella? Or jokes about Trucy’s panties?
When playing the older games, you might come across certain lines of dialogue that have aged poorly (or were already questionable back then), the most infamous example being characters expressing attraction towards underage women as a gag.
The Ace Attorney series was written in Japan starting from 2001, and as such features content that might not be culturally acceptable in the west, or in the present day. Localization director Janet Hsu opines in their blogs that, from a Japanese cultural standpoint, these gags are not to be taken as normalizing such behaviors, but rather ridiculing the people who perpetuate them.
Ace Attorney is generally considered to be progressive for its time, welcoming LGBTQ+ interpretations for its characters and being mindful of queer themes and gender identity as far back as the mid-2000s. Still, it could be argued the series makes little attempt at being politically correct. Much of its humor derives from dark comedy, featuring jokes at the expense of murder, suicide, fetishes, drug addiction, etc., generally in a deliberate attempt to make the player feel awkward or do a double-take.
All that said, characters displaying pedophilic or predatory behavior in particular have been phased out after Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, originally released in 2007.

Does “The Great Ace Attorney” get better?
Though not a unanimous opinion, The Great Ace Attorney duology is frequently regarded by fans as some of the series’ best output in terms of narrative.
That said, the first game (“Adventures”) has a notoriously slow start. Episode 1 is the longest “tutorial” case in Ace Attorney, while Episode 2 does not feature a trial segment at all. The “Late 19th Century” setting and sociopolitical undertones also translate to slightly more verbose and rich dialogue, contributing to the feeling of a tougher read.
While some consider this to be a genuine pacing issue, others believe it’s necessary for the story to build up slowly to properly introduce the more nuanced setting and characters, and to ultimately have all these elements pay off in the second game (“Resolve”).
With this in mind, it’s often recommended to go into The Great Ace Attorney with the mindset to experience one single story told across the span of two games (10 episodes in total), rather than judging “Adventures” in a vacuum.

⚖️ Apollo Justice Trilogy Thinking about Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney and what didn't work for me about the individual cases: Denying the player a satisfying "Gotcha" moment at the end (Full game spoilers) Spoiler
With discourse turning to the Apollo Trilogy yet again and a vocal group praising AA4 while condemning the 3DS games, I, as a vocal fan of DD and SoJ and someone who's... somewhat ambivalent towards AJ:AA, I wanted to stop and consider something regarding the cases of the game and the themes tying them together, and why in general I don't think I found them to be a satisfying package. In the past I've talked a lot about the cast as a whole and how I feel like the new characters are underutilized and how I just don't care for how Phoenix was used or his big dumb grudge match with Kristoph, so right now I'm mostly focused on the individual cases and specifically how they tend to be resolved.
Turnabout Trump: Like many players I actually find 4-1 to be a highlight for the game, and it has a resolution that sticks with you. It seems like the typical conclusion to an Ace Attorney case, the player presents evidence that seemingly decisively takes down the culprit, they have a breakdown and go to jail. It's only after the trial that Phoenix reveals that he knew the evidence was a forgery but let you present it because he knew Kristoph couldn't challenge it without implicating himself. I actually like this moment, and at the time it made me interested in the dynamic between Phoenix and Apollo. Apollo thinks he's getting a big Phoenix moment where he presents a major piece of evidence from an unlikely source to close out the trial, but instead all he's done is play along with Phoenix's plan to effectively frame an admittedly guilty man, and he gets so heated he actually punches the guy. Great stuff, wish literally any case after that had that energy from Apollo.
Turnabout Corner: The case proper kind of feels the least connected with the others in terms of the recurring theme of how one man can't always be expected to singlehandedly steer the case towards the correct solution with nothing but his own detective work with a mystery that feels more in line with others from earlier in the series, which might be because the concept was conceived prior to this game. The final evidence presented is more of what you'd expect of a minor detail coming back to close up the last hole in your case (the panties in the tailpipe) with the only real wrinkle being that Klavier kind of nudges you towards this. Personally I'm kind of mixed on this moment, I feel like it both takes the wind out of Apollo's sails in getting to actually solve a case without Phoenix guiding his hand while also making "nice guy" Klavier look like a bit of a dick if he seems to already know the answer before you, but that's neither here nor there really. Overall kind of a middle-of-the-road case, good mystery with mostly weak one-off characters (Guy Eldoon is cool) and an awkward place to introduce the supporting cast.
Turnabout Serenade: I have some mixed thoughts on 4-3. I actually like that it has a lot of moving parts, I like that Kristoph actually seems to be playing to win at once so you have to catch him on the backfoot once or twice, and Daryan is a serviceable enough bad guy that you want to take him down. But I agree with a lot of what's been said about the implausibility of the prosecution's case against the seemingly blind foreign child and the case kind of loses steam about halfway through once Lamiroir fingers the culprit. As a result the second half feels like there's just not enough mystery left to solve and I don't think the buildup is strong enough for the payoff of needing to get Macchi to confess on Daryan's behalf. Maybe if they had played into the idea of Daryan using his connections to mess with the investigation or we had more supporting witnesses to obfuscate things more than just dancing around the one obvious culprit it could have landed better. It's a weird mix of both too complex but also too quickly resolved to feel like you need to think outside the box. The end result is a final confrontation that's basically a less interesting version of how Phoenix took down the bad guy in 2-4.
Turnabout Succession: Hoo boy. I can't help but feel this might be the most divisive final case in the series. I've seen some people put this in their top cases of all time lists, and others put it right at the bottom. As for me... I feel like this is probably the most disappointing case if not actually the worst overall. It starts out pretty strong, I would say most of it up through the flashback trial is mostly without many major flaws beyond my continued issues with Apollo's lack of agency. But once we get to the MASON system segment... yeah, that whole bit feels like it's standing where a second investigation segment and first half of a final trial with Apollo should be. Focusing on the trials and how they relate to the others in this game though, I feel like once again the conclusion of Phoenix's last presents a great setup in how Phoenix is set up to think that he's got the unexpected winning evidence he needs only for it to be a trap to screw him and his client over. This is a cool concept, it parallels how Phoenix gets back at the guy who set him up seven years later by ironically using the same girl who was used against him in the past (now his own daughter) as well as another clueless attorney to get back at Kristoph. It'll sure be neat when we see Apollo learn about this, potentially making him question everyone in his life for their involvement in these incidents, right? I could go on about what a missed opportunity this is but I'd be getting off topic, so I'll just say the final trial segment sucks and you just present a couple pieces of evidence that just shows the guy you know is guilty might be guilty. There's no big gotcha, just "Haha, it's actually the jury that's gotcha, this was what the game was about apparently. Fuck you Apollo and fuck you player, you're not worth shit". I don't care how "epic" Kristoph's breakdown is, Phoenix vs some asshole who's already in prison is not a Pay Per View event I want to pay for.
In conclusion I think besides not being sold on the cast as a whole I feel like a lot of my negative feelings about the game come from a game where the story is built around unsatisfying finales shockingly not having a satisfying payoff. It's an interesting concept but they still needed some way to make it feel like Apollo and by extension the player got to flip the script and make a choice that changed how things play out, because I don't think switching POVs to a different character for one scene to press a button cuts it, especially when that happens after what was already supposed to be the emotional climax of the case. You can tell me I'm not big brained enough to see what this game is going for, but I'll generally take a mid case with a satisfying conclusion over a case with a lot of potential that runs out of steam before the finish line, even if I'd prefer one that's strong from start to finish.
Sorry if this is kind of rant-y, I just felt like I needed to get off my chest why this game doesn't do it for me and generally I find more to criticize looking back on it. If you feel it aged well that's fine too, but I definitely can't say I'll ever like it as much as the games that follow it.

⚖️ Full Main Series Are there any Ace Attorney characters missing body parts?
So this is a really random question but I want to explain
I was born missing a couple of fingers and toes. I've always been biased toward fictional characters that are missing body parts because of that. I've been thinking about franchises I like that have those types of creatures or characters
Are there any Ace Attorney characters that are like that? Whether born missing body parts or amputees? I've played up to 6-5 and the Layton crossover but can't think of any off the top of my head. Are there any in the GAA or AAI series?
Thanks

💻 Fangames LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO HELP WITH AN ACE ATTORNEY FANGAME!
First of all, thank you so much for the amazing reception my Ace Attorney fangame has received!
Some people asked me if it was normal for the witness to have no sprite. The truth is, I currently don't have an artist to help create the characters or new backgrounds the game needs.
That's why I'm looking for people who might be interested in contributing to the project!
I'm not just looking for artists. I could also use some help from:
- Sprite and background artists
- Writers (I've already written the story, but it still needs some polishing and refinement)
- Spanish-to-English translators
- Dialogue editors and proofreaders
If you'd like to be part of the project, have some experience, and know a lot about Ace Attorney, feel free to send me a DM!
I'd really appreciate any help!
(I'm not looking for voice actors at the moment, sorry!)

⚖️ Full Series (mainline and spin-offs) What are some plot twists you thought would have happened but didn't? Spoiler
I remembered that sometimes while playing the games, I made some wild guesses that were not true in the end, so I was wondering if that happend to any of you,if yes,I'd be curious!!
Ex. In TGAAC I thought that Pavlova was actually inspector Lestrade (they look the same first, second I remember that Pavlova wasn't in the credits at the end of the first game, when everyone tells how their life after the last case is going), and I was so sure of it until the end lol

⚖️ Full Series (mainline and spin-offs) Ranking Ace Attorney Culprits by how smart their plan was, Day 32: The Cosmic Turnabout! Spoiler

Welcome back, Aristotle Means got mostly good with some flaws. Not too bad, but could use some improvements.
Anyway, for the sake of simplicity, i am going to use the same picture for The Phantom for this and next week's case since he is the culprit for two cases in a row rather than a picture of The Phantom and when he was disguised as Bobby Fulbright. But yeah, not much to say, but we have a international terrorist who killed Apollo's BFF. So was his plan to bomb the rocket and implicate Athena good enough today?

⚖️ Phoenix Wright Trilogy Godot's career as a prosecutor Spoiler
I am aware that he wasn't really trying to "win" and his purpose was to test Phoenix Wright, but I can't get over how his prosecution career is a complete disaster.
In a nutshell, he:
> Starts off as a rookie prosecutor
> Decides to harass one specific defense lawyer by only taking cases that Phoenix has taken
> Has a 0% win rate
> Gets arrested for murder in the end
and Gumshoe REALLY hyped him up in the beginning of the game for some reason, even though it was basically his first case as a prosecutor😭

⚖️ Phoenix Wright Trilogy Just finshed Case 3-5 and the wright trilogy and... Spoiler
Holy shit. This is without a doubt the best case in the entire game. This case has so many positives the couple negatives I have about it get pushed out of the way. To make it fair, I will talk about my negatives first before I say all the positives I have about the case.
The Bad: I think they went a little overboard on trying to keep bringing up DL-6 non stop as well as fey clan history, it was important to the story and I understand that, but it felt like they were force this incident back into another case. Larry Butz involvement in this case barley gives us anything except to give wright time to recover and a piece of evidence that is only twice and it barley helps the case (in a way). Dragging out the case with the "trick locks" kinda felt a bit disappointing, Bikini is a bit annoying but she's at least tolerable.
The Good: Edgeworth taking over the case on the first day of trial was a crazy change and it kinda felt like a Mia situation where it was only once and you got to play as someone new for a change and see how they acted as defense attorneys along with the fact that Phoenix almost died after he ran across a "BURNING BRIDGE TRYING TO GO TROUGH LIKE HE HAD PLOT ARMOR". The music during the entire case was amazing as I was thrown in different moods, with "Fragrance of Dark Coffee" calm relaxing music in the village, and a brand new remixed pursuit theme when you reveal the final evidence. The evidence was all different and all had either a tiny detail that anyone could miss to the case, or it was something that was so important and out of pocket is was crazy. The constant twists in the game also got me shocked and caught me off guard with Dahlia Hawthorne coming back after her death to seek revenge on Maya/Mia "AGAIN" and how it went so wrong for her again because of maya channeling her and Dahlia getting sent back to the spirit world after she un-channeled from maya. And the biggest twist that the plot was for Dahlia to kill Maya and be channeled by Peril, but Misty was there and stoped her from being channeled, was about to kill Maya, then Godot kills her and the only reason why he caught caught was his vizor lights, the vizor itself hiding his scar, and him not being able to see red which made him miss the blood on the pillar.
Overall this was without a doubt the best case ever, I will post a full review of every case on YT eventually, but for now this is a number 1 in my opinion and I can't wait to move on to the Apollo Justice Trilogy.

💬 Discussion Crossovers you'd like to see
What if we had another crossover before aa7? What would you like to see?
I think I'd like to see Phoenix Wright vs. Minamida Minamida: Ace Attorney vs Extraordinary Attorney, I'm watching the show and imagining it.
Case 1: Turnabout Isekai.
A reimagining of 5-dlc where Nahyuta was originally supposed to prosecute the whale, but gets killed by the Yakuza (the fanbase would cheer at Nahyuta dying lol) so Edgeworth has Phoenix prosecute the one case and Minami gets to defend the whale (since she's obsessed with them.)
Case 2: Turnabout Yakuza
Minami Namina (Alita Tiala in English,) who is Minamida's cousin gets accused of the murder of Nahyuta and Minamina has to defend her things Apollo keeps trying to get his brothers killer put away. He may not prosecute, but he would definitely be on their side.

⚖️ Phoenix Wright Trilogy Is the 'Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy' considered good?
I'm having a tough time getting through the trilogy and am wondering if it's worth it. I bought the trilogy a few weeks ago and have been steadily playing it, but there are parts I'm not a fan of that take the game down for me a lot. The trials aren't very realistic, with inconsistent rules, and the episode 5: Rise from the Ashes trial is taking forever. I like the characters and the current plot (besides episode 5), but I'm unsure if I want to continue. I get that I'm essentially asking an echo chamber, but is it worth playing? Does it get better later on?

Spoilers, be warned.
Currently playing Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, and the constant laughter of Ms. Yew annoys me.. it’s over the top. and it’s too frequent. 🫠
