Upcoming changes to the subreddit rules regarding AI-assisted software projects

As many of us have noticed, there are a lot of AI-assisted software projects being posted here. This is an issue faced by other subreddits focusing on tech hobbies, and some of them have implemented rules that I think will be helpful here.

The goals:

  • Control the recent influx of questionable "I made X, because Y" type posts, the vast majority of which are created entirely with AI, have no significant development history, and are generally not maintained afterwards
  • Establish a clear stance on and rule set for how r/ADSB has decided to handle these types of posts, as well as other user-created software
  • See how these changes impact the community, seek additional feedback, and continue to adjust accordingly

New Flairs:

  • Project Showcase: Software - Little or No AI Assistance - [AI only used as coding assistant (autocomplete, debugging, refactoring, documentation, etc), if at all]
  • Project Showcase: Software - Mostly AI Generated - [AI generated most or all of the code, working at a human's direction]

Both "Project: Software" flairs have a reasonably low minimum subreddit karma requirement to be able to post with them. AutoMod will remove any post with them that don't meet the karma requirement, and inform the user why their post was removed. The minimum karma requirement is only for these two flairs. Any software project posts that try to go around this by using a different flair will fall under the new rule #6 and will be addressed.

Rule changes:

New Rules

New Rule #6 - Software Project Posting Requirements

  • All software projects must be relevant to r/ADSB, use a "Project: Software" flair, disclose AI usage with post flair and in the text of the post, include responses to the prompt displayed when posting with one of the software project flairs, and the user must meet the minimum subreddit karma requirement. Posts that do not meet these requirements, try to bypass the "Project: Software" flairs, provide incomplete or misleading disclosures, or otherwise violate community standards may be removed.

That said, since we're now officially allowing some degree of self-promotion and requiring links, we felt that we should redefine rule #5 to clarify that it applies only to monetized and commercial advertising/links. Here is the updated verbiage, with the old one below for comparison:

New Rule #5 - No Commercial Advertising or Monetized Referral Links

  • Monetized referral links, affiliate links, product advertising, and company advertising are not allowed. Contact the moderators via Mod Mail before posting if you believe an exception applies. Non-commercial personal projects are permitted, but must follow all other sub rules.

New Rule #7 - Posts and comments which discuss circumventing a service's ToS are not allowed

  • Please review any rules on data access from the ADS-B aggregators used in your project. It is a Certified Jerk Move™️to scrape data from community-run websites when they disallow it.

Flair Prompt - As mentioned in Rule #6, when posting with any of the "Project: Software" flairs, the below prompt will be displayed:

Your post MUST include:

  • A link to the GitHub (or similar) repository, which must include at least one month of commit history and screenshots
  • A description of the problem the software project solves, and why it was created instead of using an existing FOSS solution
  • An explanation of how the software project is relevant to r/ADSB, or how it may benefit members of the community
  • If you used AI or an LLM in development, a description of what role it played and how much you relied on it

If you see any posts with a Project: Software flair that do not meet the four items listed above, please report them to the mod team under Rule #7 and we'll address them.

Additional things to note:

Existing posts will be grandfathered in, and previous posts that were removed may be reposted if they meet the new requirements. New posts will be required to comply with the new rules.

As with the existing rules, when a mod removes a post for violating this new rule, a canned response will be sent to the user to inform them why their post was removed. Mods are able to add on to the response if desired before sending it.

While we're on the topic of AI, we would also like to clarify that the above rules are specific to the use of AI in software projects that are being shared, and they do not apply to posts or comments that were written with AI. There is some dissent in the community, but the general consensus in the community has been that a reasonable level of AI usage is acceptable for putting a post together, correcting grammar or formatting, or for translating from a user's native language. That said, best practice is to not include all of the excess emoticons and outline formatting that LLMs like to use. If a post or comment is egregiously AI generated, feel free to downvote it and move on, but please do not report it to the mod team solely for that.

We're looking for community feedback as we all get used to this. We plan to apply rules conservatively and gently at first, and will be listening to user reports and comments. If your post is removed and you believe it meets the requirements, please chat with us via Mod Mail and we may consider either re-opening it or letting you repost it.

TL;DR - All posts where someone has made some sort of software (AI generated or not) will require a "Project: Software" flair, and these flairs should curb the vast majority of the low quality and spammy posts.

Thank you.

I built an e-Paper desk display that shows nearby aircraft and the ISS

Hi everyone! I’ve been working on this for a few months and wanted to share it here.

It’s an ESP32-WROOM-32 driving a Waveshare 5.79" e-Paper screen (792 × 272), in a 3D-printed PLA enclosure I designed.

What it shows:

  • The closest aircraft in a radius you choose (10–250 km): type, airline, registration, route, altitude, speed, heading, vertical speed and distance
  • A mini radar with the other aircraft around you
  • An ISS mode with a world map, the station’s position, altitude, speed and distance from you

Data:

  • Aircraft: public community ADS-B data (adsb.lol, with adsb.fi as fallback)
  • Routes: VRS standing-data (CC0)
  • ISS: wheretheiss.at

It polls every 20 s and only redraws when something changes. A full refresh runs at least every 2 hours to clear e-Paper ghosting.

Setup is done from a phone through a captive portal (EN/FR), no app needed. I don’t run my own receiver yet, so I’m curious: would you find it useful to feed it from a local readsb/dump1090 instance instead?

Happy to answer any questions!

Project Showcase: Software - Mostly AI Generated Added a Dipole Ant - Amazing improvement

I was running just a piaware stick for a while. Got good results. Got a new Dipole with a booster and FM block (as I'm feeding 6 SDR sticks) The increase is amazing.

I don't have a before grab, but it was around the 100 mile mark. This is amazing https://imgur.com/a/95TL78s. Now I get things 250- 300 away!

The intial project was done using Piaware, and just a pi. The new project is (I didn't ask it to) using a new AI ADBS, and SDR trunk scanning program. It does run the Tar1090. https://imgur.com/a/RU53RWA

I also ask it to run an API pull on the airplane if (only if) I click it and get all the data, and not hide anything, as it's a private search. My own person Tar1090 map. With API pulls and images, Flights are below on the right side. https://imgur.com/a/Ut1V1gI

It's also fun to see that I can get sat images now.

This started years ago as an ADSB project. Turned into a Police scanner thing, now I figured I can combine both. (not that I have a need for the ADSB as it was a work thing) I also added Tide data, from NOAA and the county to my maps. A few captains I know asked for access. I gave them a month and said it's it helpfull

I have 5 SDRs.
2 for local County Scanner. 1 for another County Scanner. 1 that scans across NOAA, VHF Marine, ATC, and picks up Satalites when they are overhead (side project nothing there yet 1 for the ADSB.

I have all LEO and EMS/Fire calls mapped, and a Plane overlay with radar. Once I get the dish for the GeoSyn weather sat I'll add that.

I also have my weather station , and all Tide data.

home.odinassistance.com Tides.odinassistance.com Weather.odinassistance.com Scanner.odinassistance.com Aircraft.odinassistance.com.

Non should have ads. Please don't DOS me. I do run cloudflare. Some sights are being a google login, but that's just for saftey of what I share.

Project Showcase: Software - Little or No AI Assistance Native MacOS Flight Tracker: Radius Notifications, Airspace Replay and much more!

I'm an enthusiast that wanted a different way to track flights versus the traditional options.

Based on your current or manually set location with alerting when a flight is in the set radius, Inbounder Pro combines real-time ADS-B transponder tracking with a unique Airspace Replay engine—so you never miss what is flying above you now, or what passed through minutes or up to 2 hours ago.

Available in the macOS app store for free (macOS 15+):
https://apps.apple.com/app/inbounder-pro-flight-tracking/id6812617010

Front-end is Swift and hand-coded.
Using https://airlabs.co for ADS-B on the backend, running in Google Cloud based on Go which I used AI to help build out.

Would love feedback from this community as I prepare to launch on iPhone, iPad and Android with a freemium business model in hopes of recouping some of the backend costs.

Project Showcase: Software - Little or No AI Assistance I’ve built an air, sea, and space tracker on tar1090

Thumbnail map.mlat.uk
5 Upvotes

Hi all, I wanted to introduce my multi domain tracker to you all. I’ve been working on it for around a year now.

The platform is based around a modified ultrafeeder container by SDR-enthusiasts, utilising a modified tar1090 and readsb. Alongside it I also run Weidhopf’s mlat server, and an api service which I absolutely used Claude to help with. The map connects via web socket to my api, and streams live data for what’s on screen only.

The map offers a web app, shows live air, sea, and space objects, and has what I hope is a useful search feature. You can also view precipitation, wind, aurora, airports, and openseamaps via optional layers.

I started with my own station as most of us do, before moving to a net injest instance which I sent my station data to, so I could share my data with some friends and family. That quickly grew after my dad asked if it can show ships too, initially via ais catchers native integration, and later integrated into my api container.

Today I’m tracking typically 1500+ aircraft, 3000+ ships, and anything upward of 11000 satellites.

I’d welcome your feedback, and if anyone finds the site useful and is willing to contribute that would be awesome too!

Absolutely no commercial benefit to this, it’s my own project, solely owned, controlled, and occasionally broken by me.

What open ADS-B data can and can't show about a big airport: a month of Istanbul from the adsb.lol archive

Post image
1 Upvotes

I rebuilt Istanbul Airport (LTFM) from the adsb.lol daily archive: every position within 50 nm, turned into arrivals, departures, runways, go-arounds and holds, with a browser replay.

Things I learned about the data:

  • The archive is thinned. Most points are about 5 s apart, but straight legs can have 3-minute gaps.
  • Near LTFM there's no ground coverage. Arrivals are tracked to about 300 ft, but departures are usually first seen around 11,000 ft, 12 nm out. Coverage near runway 36 also ends around 2,000 ft on some days.
  • The result undercounts DHMI's published average by 11.5%, mostly from those unseen departures.
  • Suceava (LRSV) in Romania is worse: in 10 days nothing was seen below 14,800 ft within 47 nm, so every flight looks like an overflight.

If anyone feeds near Suceava, or has a view of LTFM's runways, that's the gap.

Raw 1090 Mhz signals

Which service provides free 1090 Mode S and ADS-B signal data? I am trying to look at samples to count how many signals are seen in each area, and also look for fields within the Model S/ADS-B message blocks that aren't always easily available.

How to debug 978MHz operation?

I've got a piaware system running with 1090MHz receiving that is working well. I recently added a second receiver for 978MHz operation but I'm not picking up any signals. I'm pretty sure I should be receiving UAT signals in the area.

What's a good way to debug the system?

I'm away from home for a few more days but I'm trying to plan out how I should attack this. I have an AirNav Radar FlightStick UAT - 978 MHz USB Receiver. The antenna is a repurposed 2m ham radio antenna, which I believe should work fine (it works great for feeding the 1090 receiver).

I've changed the serial numbers on both the 1090 and 978 USB sticks using rtl-sdr / rtl_eeprom and modified dump978-fa and dump1090-fa init files with those serial numbers.

One thing I noticed while organizing my thoughts for this post is that I'm using dump978-fa even though I have a RadarBox USB receiver. Should I be using dump978-rb instead of -fa, even though I'm posting to FlightAware?

Should I be loading up some other receiver software just to hear some noise to confirm receipt of something??

Edit: I’m in the Los Angeles basin. I should be picking up some contacts from either Torrance or Santa Monica GA flights.

Edit2: I'm on a Pi 4, (B+ I think). Using the flightaware web site I can see there is UAT traffic, but I'm not picking it up. Yes, less common than 1090, but still present.

Real MLAT still needs physical receivers, measured clock calibration, authorized feeds

I’m building an open-source receiver registry with an experimental multilateration (MLAT) application. MLAT estimates an aircraft’s position by comparing when several ground receivers hear the same radio transmission.

The application currently works with synthetic observations and historical replay. I have not yet validated it with a synchronized physical receiver network.

I’m looking for people who could help with:

  • Access to authorized, raw, timestamped Mode S or Beast-format observations.
  • Receiver clock synchronization and calibration.
  • Planning a trial with at least four receivers at different locations, with overlapping coverage.
  • Suitable reference-position data for checking the calculated results.

If you operate one receiver, your experience could still help. Ordinary ADS-B reception alone may not provide the timing precision required, so advice from people who have worked on MLAT would be especially useful.

I've been building a flight map with detailed 3D airports – what would you improve?

Post image
67 Upvotes

Hey all,

for the past few months I've been working on map.flights, a free live flight map without ads. Lately I've spent most of my time on the airports: 3D buildings, aircraft taxiing to their stands in their real liveries, ground vehicles around them. (Screenshot is LAX)

I'd really like some honest feedback. What feels off, what's missing, what would make you actually use it over what you use now?

https://map.flights

And btw, if anyone here runs a receiver and would like to help: I'd be grateful for every single feeder. Stations close to airports make the biggest difference, that's where the ground movements get smooth. If you already feed somewhere else, adding us takes a few minutes and doesn't change anything there: https://map.flights/en/pair

Thanks!
