Gear Guide Gear Guide 2026 - Air Compressors

Hey, everyone! We are continuing our series on 4x4 related equipment and accessories as we build our own "Gear Guide" encyclopedia. This week's focus is Air Compressors.

Same as last time, we're going to do this in a specific way to keep things organized: the top-level comments for this thread should be the Brand Name (e.g., "ARB" or "TJM"), and subsequent child comments should be your specific model and your detailed experience with it.

Example Format:

"ARB"

"CKMTP12 Twin Portable"

"I’ve been using the twin portable kit for 3 years now. It’s incredibly fast on my 43s, usually taking under 2 minutes per tyre from 15psi to 35psi. It does get bloody hot though, so be careful with the hose coupling after a long run..."

"Nice one! Have you had any issues with the thermal cut-out on 40-degree days? I'm toss-up between this and the brushless version."

We are doing it this way to maintain consistency across the board. Every single Gear Guide discussion will be pinned in the Wiki for everyone, new and old, to refer to whenever they need real-world advice on what gear actually handles the heat of the Aussie outback.

Whether it’s a hard-mounted twin motor, a portable "ammo box" style unit, or a budget-friendly thumper—if it gets you back to highway pressures without blowing a fuse, let’s hear about it.

Let’s get it on!

Gear Guide Gear Guide 2026 - Recovery Gear (Straps, Ropes, Shackles, Kits and Recovery Boards.)

Hey, everyone! We are continuing our series on 4x4 related equipment and accessories as we build our own "Gear Guide" encyclopedia. This week's focus is Recovery Gear, focussing on Straps, Ropes, Shackles, Kits and Recovery Boards.

Same as last time, we're going to do this in a specific way to keep things organized: the top-level comments for this thread should be the Brand Name (e.g., "Saber Offroad" or "ARB"), and subsequent child comments should be the specific item or kit and your detailed experience with it.

Example Format:

"Saber Offroad"

"12,500kg Kinetic Recovery Rope"

"I’ve switched from a traditional snatch strap to this kinetic rope on my Ranger. The stretch is much smoother, and it doesn't 'bang' as hard when it takes the load. I’ve used it in soft sand at Robe and it was flawless..."

"Hey, I was looking into that! Did you get the one with the protective sleeve, or just the bare rope? How’s it holding up against abrasion?"

We are doing it this way to maintain consistency across the board. Every single Gear Guide discussion will be pinned in the Wiki for everyone, new and old, to refer to whenever they need real-world advice or opinions on what is arguably the most important safety gear in your rig.

Whether it’s kinetic ropes, soft shackles, snatch blocks, or complete recovery kits—if it’s the gear you trust when you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere, let’s hear about it.

Let’s get it on!

Gday, just looking at getting some bigger tyres for my navara, currently looking at a 33 inch mud tyre with +20 offset and a 2 inch lift. Does anyone know if this will work or if I’m still going to scrub on the upper control arms?

Advice Anyone running thermal dashcams?

Hi all

I drive 2018 Ford Ranger and do a lot of remote driving for work, heaps of it at dusk and through the night with hundreds of ks of empty road between towns. I just got my bull bar repaired last week after hitting a kangaroo.

I’ve seen vehicles with thermal cameras that help spot wildlife before it darts out of the brush. I’ve been looking into the Vanture P2 thermal dashcam, but I’d like to hear from people who’ve actually used it before spending the money.

At 100 km/h, does it really give you enough warning? For those using thermal cameras, when do you find them most useful compared to a decent infrared night vision camera?

Cheers.

I’m looking at getting a 12v controller for my setup, I have a kings 200ah lithium battery and I’m going to be running solar panels and a domestic 80L upright fridge. I’ll probably run some camp lights too.

I’ve had a look at the kings one with the 25A DC/DC and the tech world with the 40A DCDC charger aswell as the kickass one.

What else are people running and what can you tell me about them

Advice Gu Patrol ute

Hey fellas looking at finding a 4.2t patrol ute to go away with either building my own setup or buying someone else’s and just wondering if there’s anything you guys might think to bring up.

Things like fuel economy and reliability would be awesome for firsthand knowledge I’ve been trying to join some groups on fb to ask about em but my posts aren’t being accepted.

Also I know it might be silly with the way diesel is costing now but I miss 4wd so much

Advice Tyres recommendation for ford everest

After some tyres recommendation for my ford everest trend ? The OEM tyres have busted after 45k km. I do mostly city and highway driving with 2-3 trips on beach sand . Shortlisted pirelli scorpion all terrain plus and wildpeak at3. I like the look of at3 but not sure the impact on road noise and fuel economy.

Advice Fuel economy with 2" bigger wheels

Hey guys, I have a px3 ranger and am about to go from my standard 265/60r18s to 275/70r17s. So essentially 30" to 32", and am wondering how much that really made to your economy, for those that have made wheel changes...

Right now I average 9.2L per 100kms, I suspect I'll realistically be getting 9.8-10.5L per 100kms after the change.

Or is my estimate way out?

I understand multiple variables come into it, but I'm just after a rough guideline.

Cheers

Advice Which would you choose

Starting to do some mods to Prado 150 2013.

Only has all terrains ATM.

Will be doing day trips and occasionally 1 or 2 nighters. Nothing extensive. Local to Melbourne.

I am getting Kaon underbody protection first.

After that I can't decide what to do next.

12V system with 200AH battery

OR

2inch Dobinson's lift kit IMS

Whats the more reasonable option?

I keep thinking of the 12v system because I want to have a fridge in the car 24/7 for drinks etc during summer but I'm unsure if that's better value than the winch lift for better maneuverability.

Reason with me criticise and help me decide

Thanks

Vehicle Buying Advice [BUYING] - [2012] [Toyota - SWB 150 Prado] [$35000] [Melbourne, VIC]

Post image

Hey Guys,

Have been sussing out some prados and have come across a nice SWB one that presents well but has some odd history.

It is listed for 34k with 270k km on it. Purchased from NSW with last rego being in NSW, Odometer history as follows

269,707 km - 11 February 2026

266,873 km - 12 September 2025

266,814 km - 11 September 2024

Seller says it runs well but hasn't had any time to register it since purchasing at the beginning of the year.

Since purchasing he has done a transmission service and the rear main seals - with the log book being allegedly 60% there.

Am aware of the mark up for the swb and am looking at both LWB and SWB Version

Will be looking at it on the weekend so just want some more insight, opinions and what to look for.

Thanks heaps

Looking for advice please! I’ve got a 2021 4x2 Ford Ranger XLT, and I want to do some beach driving. I’m not looking to do anything crazy, but it would be nice to access some of the driving beaches in WA. Is it possible with my Ute or am I better served getting a proper 4x4? Pic of my Ute included.

Advice Ranger Wolftrak - wheel inserts

For the life of me I can't find a product code for the wheel inserts for my 2026.50 Ranger Wolftrak.

I can find the centre cap, but I want the little triangle plastic bits. My dealer is a bit useless so if I go with a code (an online link would be amazing) it would be excellent

Advice Black v Silver Dual cab with Black Tray and Canopy

What the thoughts on an all blacked out dual cab, Tray and Canopy compared to a Silver Dual Can with Black Tray and Canopy. The last time I owned a black car I said I would never do it again because it’s a pain to keep clean. But that was a long time ago. What are your thoughts ?

Photo How I Prepare Bánh Mì While Camping 🏕️🥖

Thumbnail

Someone asked me what’s inside my 4WD that allows me to prepare Bánh Mì for my friends while camping. 😄

Let me take you on a little tour and introduce you to the different parts of my setup! 🚙🥖

Note: Preparing Bánh Mì in my 4WD is not part of my main business. I make Bánh Mì for free for my friends when we go camping. If you want to try my authentic Vietnamese Bánh Mì, you can find my Red Lady Banh Mi trailer at Oakleigh Rotary Sunday Market. ❤️

The purpose of this post is to share how I set up my 4WD, so everyone can get some ideas for their own 4WD builds and have fun with them.

I'm sorry for using AI in my banner design. As a small business owner, I have to do almost everything myself to save money and keep my business running during these challenging times. With the cost of everything going up, running a small business isn't easy nowadays.

I'm also not very good at food photography or designing attractive food images, so I use AI to help design the Bánh Mì images. The meat pie image, however, was provided by my partner, Glenroy Bakery Meat Pies.

The reason I included that banner was simply to introduce my small business, Red Lady Banh Mi, which I often operate at Oakleigh Rotary Sunday Market (you can see it in the last photo).

What I mean is that I'm not selling Banh Mi or making money while camping, and my 4WD is not a food truck. If I turned it into a food truck, the local council could revoke my licence because it wouldn't meet their requirements. The setup in my 4WD is primarily for camping. 😊

Of course, money is important, but I know when and where I should be making money. I just want to do something different and interesting while camping with my friends and have some fun along the way. As you know, life is short, so just enjoy it your own way, mate! 😎🤙

Thank you for your understanding and support of my small business. ❤️🙏

Advice Dealer bought BT50

*EDIT** here are some shots of the beast 🤙🤣

Okay brains trust. I am seeking guidance on a 2013 single cab chassis BT5O 4x4 6 speed 3.2l. purchased from a dealership with 3 year extended warranty comprehensive "C" with Integrity (coverage included in pics).

I sent an email to the dealership Friday morning and am yet to receive a reply. After reading their 1 star reviews on Google I am anticipating an absolute shitfight to get them to action repairs. The consensus from disgruntled customers seems to be they will try weasel out of their obligations and then fail to rectify issues and take unreasonable amounts of time to address them through their own mechanic shops. I would like to use my own trusted 3rd party for any repairs that are to be carried out.

Obviously there are a fair few items on there that I'm not expecting to be covered but I am seeking to ascertain which items on this list that would render the vehicle unroadworthy/defective and then how I go about asserting that to the dealership.

The mismatched shocks on the back are laughable, they've spray painted the entire underbody black (without cleaning up the surface rust first). Also the trailer socket is not transmitting signal to any trailer, the socket/plugs all around the wiring loom are in pretty degraded state and the second set of rear lights mounted on the tray headboard have been straight chopped off.

No defects were declared in a section 5 form at time of sale.

I'll get some more pics of the vehicle itself and update this post later.

Any and all bits of advice on how to approach this is sincerely appreciated.

Advice India| Took on a project lately 2010 Pajero SFX. Need some recomendation.

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m currently restoring a 2010 Mitsubishi Pajero SFX in India and would appreciate recommendations from fellow Pajero owners and 4x4 enthusiasts.

I’m looking for:

- Suitable all-terrain tyres for the Pajero SFX

- Strong, reliable steel or alloy rims

- Refurbished or used Pajero parts at reasonable prices

- Trusted sellers, dismantlers or garages that can ship parts to Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh,India.

The tyre size currently fitted to my vehicle is 265/70 R15. I’ve seen owners mention sizes such as 265/70 R16 and 275/70 R16, but I’d prefer to confirm the correct size before purchasing. I’m particularly interested in tyres that work well for a combination of highway driving, occasional trails and monsoon conditions.

For wheels, I’m open to both OEM replacements and rugged aftermarket steel wheels, provided the **PCD, offset, centre bore and brake clearance are correct. I’m not looking for an extreme lift or a setup that causes rubbing.

I’m also trying to source refurbished or used parts, including alternator, lights upgrade, antena etc. I’ve checked online used-parts marketplaces and social media listings, but recommendations from people who have actually bought from a seller would be very helpful. Delhi-NCR/Mayapuri sellers are also an option if they can reliably ship to Kanpur.

Please share:

  1. Tyre and rim sizes that have worked well on your SFX

  2. Brand/model recommendations and approximate prices

  3. Trusted used-parts dealers, dismantlers or Pajero specialists

  4. Any sellers or garages I should avoid

  5. Photos of your own Pajero setup, if possible

I’ll verify the tyre placard and wheel specifications before finalising anything. Thanks in advance for helping with this restoration.

Advice QE Pajero Sport - Exhaust upgrade for extra towing torque

Has anyone here upgraded the exhaust on a QE Pajero Sport?

Thinking about this upgrade to give it a bit more grunt for towing but don't want to end up with other problems. Is it worth the cost to upgrade?

Advice 120 Series Prado

Hi, I have my own 2008 120 series land cruiser Prado, and I’ve started kitting it out with drawers, fridge, dual battery etc. Prepping it to go touring and medium-heavy 4wd.

I’ve been wanting to get an awning and roof top tent however I read that the weight limit for the roof is only 100kg. And most awning+rtt+roof racks would be close to if not passing 100kg. Without even the weight of a person in the tent.

Now my problem is I don’t know weather or not to believe this because I’ve seen people put rtt on a 120 series before.

Are they just risking the weight limit or am I missing something?

Advice Drilling a cable gland

Post image
17 Upvotes

I know for a lot of you, this is a DIY job, but I’m building my troopy in NSW from a donga in the NT, so I’m going to need to pay.

I need to remove the roof lining, drill about a 20mm hole in the roof skin, debur and prime/cold gal/whatever the cut edges, fit a cable gland, seal it up, then reinstall the roof lining with a matching hole cut in it. I can run the cabling myself or have a sparky do it, that’s a separate job.

The auto sparky I usually use is reluctant to do this.

Is this a job a panel shop could take on as a cashie? Marine fitter? I can get the car to either of those.

Or do I just need a better sparky?

Unrelated pic for attention (my old 200 up here in the Territory)
