Last game turned me into an AP Kog believer. Even in a nightmare game when he was put so hard behind he looked completely insane. If someone finds the right angle for it, that's a legit pick.
131
u/trying2hide 11h ago
I think other teams just punish it a lot better. Kanavi is ganking you at level 3,5,6,7,8 etc
67
u/OnlyAnEssenceThief Worst Kai'Sa NA 11h ago
This is the way. Do not let the freak of nature scale, punish him and pop him at first opportunity. Bully him like Smolder.

Kog'Maw is a disgusting champion (always has been) who is only held back by his unpopularity and the misconception that he needs to be played AD with Lulu. Do not sleep on him. It's the same with Zilean.
195
u/deadedgo 04eva 11h ago
He's held back by the fact he can't do shit when the enemy team has reliable engage. We saw his damage but we also saw him be utterly useless for the longest time due to his obvious weaknesses. I'd think we'll see him more often now but I hope teams draft him when it makes sense
43
u/MrPraedor 11h ago
Yeah he has no peel for himself and no mobility. There are so many champions that can just run him down and he cant do anything about it. There are absolutely times when can be good especially if enemy has no proper engage he comes way stronger.
16
u/Thundermelons GALA Defense Force, returning IG fan 10h ago
People will also cite champs like Aphelios and Jinx as "no mobility" forgetting that these champs have some CC for themselves in emergencies and ways to contribute to fights from very long range (Jhin W/R, Jinx W/R, Aphelios R/green gun Q). Kog'maw has neither of those other than a slow on his E and a very mana-intensive R that IMO isn't as impactful on its own as say a Jinx R or Aphelios R. I do think he has a unique space in that he can build Zhonyas without losing anything, similar to Varus, but he has a LOT of downsides and needs a team constructed both basically to enable him AND an enemy comp constructed that can't punish him.

u/bluesound3 11h ago
I mean it didnt help that for some bizarre reason he not only didnt pick it last, but he also picked it into triple dive(Kennen J4 Rakan). If he only had to deal with one of those it would've been insanely broken

u/ChromosomeDonator 11h ago
Yeah every single ability of his scales with AP, and the ONLY ability that scales with AD is his ult... which you can't spam without going AP mana items, and it deals much less damage going AD requiring the spam.
Even W, his DPS %-health based ability, scales only with AP.
9
u/Substantial-Stay-451 11h ago
Yesterday Kog + Jhin was such an impressive show. Kog ults right after Jhin, finishing people at a distance. This kinda worked today in the late game as well paired with Lucian ult but they were too behind
5
u/loyal_achades 10h ago
As someone who’s played a lot of AP Kog in soloqueue (albeit poorly):
He is absolute shit early game and has some truly unplayable lane matchups. That said, if the lane matchup is playable and you can scale, his late game is legitimately insane with his range and damage output. I think a lot of pro teams will refuse to learn it simply because they won’t play something that concedes the early game so completely unless it’s clearly massively overtuned.

Nah this champ won't be able to get any items vs better teams. KC was trolling this game

Apparently the reason Caps and the rest of g2 came up with picking Kog cause they realized that Rekkles refuses to play picks that happen to counter it.
5
u/GenjDog 9h ago
That's not the case at all. Caps came up with it in a dream the night before the final. But that was also the only time Rekkles played Aphelios that entire playoffs.

Ap kog has legit some of the craziest scaling for a mage in the game. His utility and survivability are just so poor that it's a gigantic challenge to get there. If you can build a good protection comp around him to keep him safe, he becomes a walking orbital cannon that can zero out champs near instantly from crazy range.

Well, psychopathic poro gave him a 0/10 for game 2, so he might as well have shat the bed
Context: poro's grading system says that everyone starts as a 5/10. Good plays lift your score, bad ones lower it. Ending up on a 0 means you had a horror game
10

not that he was really the issue, but i don't understand why you're playing sansan a second time. the first game there was at least a very clear plan build around him, but when that doesn't work surely you go back to your stable jungler that has been on the main roster the whole year.
30
u/tuerancekhang 11h ago
this is the only bo that has little to no consequences if they had already planned for loser bracket. The only time a sub can be used. I guess their plan is to squeeze out as much international play time as possible
42
u/Jaime060304 11h ago
I don't think the coaches are very good at drafts full stop.
All 3 games were a complete draft diff.
67
u/Lacrimosss 11h ago
It's so obvious that they simply can't win with a normal draft, so they do weird shit
It's like Master vs Challenger players and u r blaming them for not drafting normal
The fact that they drafted like that for 3 games in a row, means they simply can't play normal shit vs KC
28
u/big938363 11h ago
A team like MVK isn’t gonna beat a major region team playing conventionally, especially when they’re almost all rookies. A good draft can only go so far when there’s hands and macro diff

Two pieces blocking the squares where the king can move. Checkmate.
MVK couldn't ignore Elder, nor protect their nexus.
Vietnamese players can have mechanics, but without pro game knowledge you can't compete at pro. It always has been that way.

Really fun showing from MVK. If they had any macro I think they could've taken a game
Also game 3 made me realize that Drakos is a really really good caster, he was able to switch from "easy 3-0 stomp lets fuck around" to "oh shit they might make it interesting" very well

If Canna just kept his ult for Baron or for a tf instead of using it to try to 1v1 people this game would have been 15 mins shorter. This whole series I constantly had this feeling like MVK could have won if they just were a bit more experienced and played a bit smarter. The compositions they drafted seemed awkward but once it played out in game, it didn’t look that bad. It feels like MVK are cooking something that another team could latch onto and dominate with if that makes sense?

Interesting, I had the exact opposite feeling. Even in game 2, it never felt like KC were in trouble. The opponent made super dumb plays that resulted in fairly low gains and bleeding money left and right. Once KC adapted to this unreasonable guerilla warfare, they demolished them.

Sadly for MVK, they only had some mechanics,
some good skirmishes and a few teamfights.
MVK lacked everything else, so they naturally lost in a pro match.
14
u/Virtual-Can-5678 10h ago
I don’t get why people are acting like KC played badly despite winning 3-0. They played slowly, they controlled the games and won trough good macro, the last game is a great example of this.
I’d rather have them do that rather than over force things and lose just like C9 did.

u/Bisketo 12h ago
The team with yorick losing to a splitpush base race with their Yorick grouped is down atrocious
3
u/Rawdream 11h ago
No pro game knowledge and they play like solo q, anyone moving to cover any lane.
I don't remember if Yorick had TP when MVK didn't have inhibitor in bot, but instead of sending Yorick to clean lane, Lucian covered that, so KC just started the Baron.
In a different meta, they'd have just lost there, in this Season's metas, you can still make something in teamfights in any stage, if there's still damage.

u/Sirhaddock98 Never a dull moment 11h ago
I feel like they weren't really actually doing much to get draft advantages though, they picked "weird" things but they didn't really make sense in the context of KC's comps. You need to actually have some method to the madness for it to be respectable, otherwise it's just madness.

I don't know man. If you're a KC fan you've won 2 series but can't be feeling good about what you're seeing.
19
u/Maximum_Platypus_272 11h ago
Completely the opposite. It has been two years in a row that KC starts every single international like a snail, and eventually ramps up. Them winning a very close series yesterday into completely annihilating MVK today is a very positive sign, especially after going the exact opposite route in LEC.
11
u/AmadeusSalieri97 11h ago
Also, I don't think people are very good at judging skill in a vacuum. They see a messy game between MVK/KC and think it's super low level but if it was the exact same gameplay between GenG/T1 it'd be an amazing display of skill.
I think KC is obviously worse than the top LCK/LPL teams, but I don't think these two games mean that they will just get steamrolled. As usual I would bet on some close games that end in throw and a 2-1 series that leads to elimination tbh.
7
u/Objective_Offer2257 11h ago
I think the laners are doing pretty good. Seems like Canna just disrespected a bit this series because he is like 2 lvls ahead of the enemy laner.
Yike on the other hand is sad to see. I think both series he hasn't made a single play that got his team ahead. The trundle game was fine.
Like, in this game again on the baron. You have ga and you are up so much. Your teammates can't really enter because of the annoying kog maw poke. Just send it on him and they ace, get baron and win the game there. In the jungle too. Canna nearly 1vs4 the enemy. Just sent it, even if they get away you at least get 2 flashes from the carries and it's unplayable for them after that.
He is playing like he is on a big losing spree. First couple games you lost and it wasn't even your fault, just shitty teammates that day, but then you start doubting your plays and actually start playing bad. It gets in your head. He plays like this at every international. I don't know how he can break it, probably needs 2 games in a row where he hardcarries against top tier jungler.

depends on their goals. if its to do well at worlds its cooked, if its just to make it out of playins who cares because I think C9 is just as bad

as eu third seed i'm very very happy if they just make it to swiss.
if i were a kc fan though, looking at the whole year, that would still be pretty meh i imagine.

C9 is def worse they lost to the worst form possible of KC (the one that lost 3-0 vs KOI)

Okay but where is KC even going from here next year? They are in such an odd spot roster wise.

I wouldn't say that. The win against C9 was a bit lucky but this series it felt like they were just playing safe and taking as little risks as possible because they knew they were just straight up better. They were completely in control.

I mean, all is good as long as we are in the worlds. yes, it could have been better, but for now it's still 2 days alive

Why does this kog champ deal 5000 damage per auto with full ap items

u/RukiMotomiya 11h ago
Kog'maw's W has an AP ratio on the percent health damage. If you're not stacking up some strong MR, it hits like a truck.

u/ficoplati 11h ago
Well I know that I'm just not sure it's a good design for a champ that has 50 billion range ult to also have 50 billion range attacks that deal that much damage.
Xayah literally couldn't get in range to auto

This is the kind of game that makes you think of both teams in a worse light.

Now im wondering how good TSW are because they ran thru this team way harder than KC did

Classic Sofm's garbage draft, MVK got giga gapped in draft every single game in the LCP for the last 2 years but nothing changed

u/Friendly_douchebag 11h ago
Don't let this make you think KC is a good team
If MVK macro is at least decent then KC is doom.
Like how the hell can you lose a baron at 7k lead. KC is lucky most of them got out alive and only lose baron.

Respect to MVK, very fun team and actually they can beat C9 on a very good day. I think KC, when they are confident, are a bit too good mechanically for them (except Yike), that doesnt fit well their aggresive gameplay.
