Discussion Math REU summer 2027 — any updates yet?

• Upvotes

Hi all, current third-year here. I'm hoping to do the Math department's REU next summer (2027), but I can't find a 2027 page on the department site, and nothing has shown up on Handshake yet either. Does anyone know when info usually gets posted, or who to contact about it? Thanks!

Classes This is such a shot in the dark but does anyone have the syllabus for any of neuroscience electives?

I'm a high school senior applying to UChicago and I'm trying to write my "why UChiago" essay and I was hoping to be able to get a syllabus of a required neuroscience class. Any help is greatly appreciated 🙏

(I'll also just take general advice for either of the supplementals, that would also be greatly appreciated!)

Classes Okay… is delta epsilon a bump in the road or are we cooked?

I’m aware of the school’s reputation for the math classes being kind of a pain. My question is, how screwed am I if I genuinely, unequivocally, cannot understand these stupid fucking proofs?

I hear from other people in other schools that it’s not really a relevant part of calculus but it also seems to be a frequently brought up part of UChicago’s math rigor.

If i (or we, if my peers are anything to go off of) simply cannot grasp this level of abstraction, is this a simple issue of failing a Pset or is it gonna cripple the foundations of all the calculus we take after?

Fuck epsilon delta.

Discussion The silence and lack of action surrounding SA on campus

I’m an undergrad here and I’m disappointed by the lack of action taken in response to the SA at AEPi recently. Beyond the initial community alert sent to our Outlooks, has admin even acknowledged and communicated to students what happened? To what extent has this been a media ploy — over the past few years the Maroon has highlighted the harrowing statistics of sexual assaults on campus (ie here and here) but what have admin done in response, if anything?

All I’ve seen were reposts from various offices about “sexual assault awareness month” (ie CARES) and recruitment for peer educators that go around with presentations about SA prevention, but very, very little direct acknowledgement of the case beyond mentions in candid conversation.

Please tell me what I’ve been seeing isn’t representative of the institution; have I been missing out on communications? Or is this another symptom of the university’s face of “neutrality” and avoidance of responsibility, similar to what the campus saw during the Palestine encampments? Does the institution officially recognize Greek life, or does it consider them semi-autonomous, because the media’s wording of “off-campus frat” really sounds like the twisting of language for the university to avoid taking action. I know it’s not unique to our campus, but gosh is the silence deafening; and the lack of energy, lack of student organizers are demotivating.

Alumni & students alike — what is the most effective thing we could do right now? Is anyone interested in building coalition, coming together somehow to protect our peers to a greater degree? Are formal peer educator etc positions actually strategic or will students not take them seriously; and how can we work from within the institution?

Hi everyone! The Grad Music Collective, formed last year, is back for our second year as UChicago’s only graduate student focused music collective. We focus primarily on vocal music of all styles including choral, international, a cappella, and theater. We are also open to instrumentalists! We provide a space for grad students from across schools to find a creative outlet through music and perform at divisional events as well as hold a bi-annual concert. We are currently auditioning for the fall of 2026! Please see the attached flyer for details and sign up for an informal audition date on October 21 or 22nd. Link will be in the comments! Sign up by October 18th, and please feel free to comment with questions and encourage your friends to sign up!

It has been a phenomenal way for us all to make friends in other divisions and look beyond our own bubbles.

No experience is required and we welcome musicians from all musical traditions!

Discussion Lemonade?

Hi guys. So, because of the way my gut is built, I can’t have caffeine. Despite this, I love hitting up the cafes, so I’m wondering if any have decent lemonade options. I love the strawberry lemonade at Plein Air but obviously can’t hit that up everyday … just wondering if anyone has any on campus recs.

I saw it in the Grubhub app, but haven't been down there yet. Is it worth it? I saw it has a mix of regular and new things. Is it any better than in Hutch?

Hyde Park Best Hyde Park barber shop for longer hair?

I’m a man with shoulder-length hair looking to get a haircut. I know some barbers are more comfortable with shorter hair, so I’m curious if anyone has recommendations for me.

Discussion MPCS students — how does CPT work for a summer internship after first year?

Has anyone in MPCS actually gotten CPT approved for a summer internship? I'm a first-year (F-1, started Fall 2026), applying for Summer 2027.
If you have, I'd love to know:
Did Autumn + Winter + Spring count as the "one academic year" requirement?
Which course did you register for, and did it cost extra tuition?
How long did OIA approval take?
Thanks!

Discussion USHIP and odyssey scholarship

I know the odyssey scholarship covers USHIP, but does anyone know if I would still receive my refund every quarter if I opt in? Or is that refund just the money that would have been used to cover the insurance?

Discussion storage scholars reviews vs uhaul - anyone used both for summer storage?

my boxes came back fine through storage scholars last month but nos that I've actually looked at what a summer of sitting in a warehouse cost me, I'm second guessing it for next year. the uhaul plus a monthly unit route sounds way cheaper if you can move everything yourself. did anyone here do it that way instead, and was it worth the hassle or is the door to door pickup the thing worth paying for

Discussion Fridge on campus

I'm currently living off campus and bringing my own food to campus every day. I know of quite a few places with microwaves, but I was wondering if there are any refrigerators on campus where I could store my food to keep it fresh throughout the day. I know there's one at Crerar but it's a bit far from my classrooms. Are there any other options available?

Classes What to major in for Quant Trading?

Hi all!

I have gotten commited to uchicago through SSEN(so excited!!) and my main goal is to break into quant trading(i also genuinely find this interesting btw, not just for the money(i mean some part of it is that obviously but its a mixture) ). I really don't want to do pure math major so I'm wondering what should i study to break into quant trading.

I'm currently considering:

1)caam: pros: Most ideal for quant trading from what I've researched so far, kind of combines all of cs, math, and stats into one. cons: I don't feel like there are that many backup options with this major if i don't break into quant trading? I could do caam+econ for backups, but I really don't want to go into investment banking/consulting even if monetary compensation is similar as that is just something that doesn't interest me.

2)caam+cs: pros: This is also perfect for quant trading, but with cs backup opportunities like swe. cons: Probably a lot of overlap that is redundant, Uchicago recommends on their website to not do a double major in caam with cs or stats.

3)CS+Stats: pros: I think this is still decently optimal for quant trading, with crazy good backup options. Cons: I feel like this combination might prepare me for quant trading a bit worse and hurt recruiting a bit, but maybe I can supplement the learning part by taking a few math classes I'm missing in quant trading prep as electives, idk??

Additionally, what should I study between now and before I start college to get more prepared?

Any advice is appreciated, please don't clown on me ; I'm just a pre-frosh whose interested in quant trading and trying to figure out what to study in college!
