The Las Palmas Park Issue - your input

Las Palmas Park's disputed renovation project, in which city goals (especially construction of a cricket field) in it's perceived demand for park development has been hotly contested.

Express your opinions in this 5-minute survey: Survey Form (printable version)

The survey is designed for verifiability and privacy with the goal of validating the city's data which was contested for questions around process and special interest conflicts.

Why now?

The survey results will be shared with the city soon, in preparation for the city's announced public meetings November 16+18.

Content of a reddit Post from May Describing the Conflict:

What are we opposing?

  • The proposal to fence the entire lawn at Las Palmas Park to convert it into a dedicated single-use sports field.
  • The addition of stadium flood lights to the field.

Misconceptions:

  • “They are against cricket”.
    • We are against restricting a popular shared space, used by hundreds of people at a time for various recreational activities, into a fenced area to be used by some 20 adults at a time.
  • “The lights would actually be nice”.
    • These are tall stadium flood lights, taller than a house, not gentle path lights. They would be lit until 10pm. Imagine what this means for the houses adjacent to the park, whose bedroom windows face the park.
  • “Cricket enthusiasts deserve a place to play too”.
    • Sunnyvale already has two dedicated cricket fields, one at Ortega Park and one at Fair Oaks park.
    • Recreational cricket is also one of the sports played at Las Palmas Park today, without a dedicated field.
  • “The cricket field is similar to the baseball diamond at the park”.
    • No, the proposed professional cricket field is the size of two NFL football fields and will take up the entire lawn. Even the existing walking path would have to be shifted to make room for it.
  • “Well, if this is what the community wanted”.
    • The community voted for the mixed use open field as the most important feature of the park. (see June 2025 survey results)
    • Cricket was one of the least desired new features, with only 6.5%.
    • In fact, people asked for additional open space (14%).
  • “The NIMBY neighbors want to treat the park as their personal backyard.”
    • If you’ve ever enjoyed the green field for yourself, this affects you too. This affects anyone who has brought their kids to the park, attended a birthday party, played volleyball, soccer, baseball, had a picnic, or simply walked around. None of these activities would be possible anymore.
    • Hundreds of people from other neighborhoods use that space on a weekend afternoon. But fine, yes, the houses closest to the park care more because they would be affected by the giant stadium flood lights lit up until 10pm. This park is not isolated.

Why is everyone so worked up about this?

  • In June 2025 the city did a survey to understand community preferences for the upcoming renovation of Las Palmas Park. In those results**, the open lawn was voted as the “most important feature” and “most liked feature” of the park**. In that survey, only 6% of respondents asked for a cricket field. (see June 2025 survey results)
  • Following that survey the city is considering two options: (1) replacing the entire lawn with a fenced cricket field, and (2) renovation with minor changes (see page 11) The cricket field option seems to have come out of nowhere! The city haven’t made a decision yet, but why is this even one of the only two options considered, if the survey results did not support it?
  • Decisions are only as good as the data they are based on. People were also able to vote multiple times in one of the surveys. Also, people from outside of Sunnyvale participated in the vote. The results of this survey did not match the sentiment in the room and the results from previous surveys.
  • One of the Parks and Recreations commission members is and has been the president of the Northern California Cricket Association during this time (see NCCA officials, see Parks and Rec commission). Despite multiple calls from community members, he has not recused himself over this perceived conflict of interest.
  • The open field at Las Palmas Park is highly used by the broader community. For example, on a regular Saturday, hundreds of people use the Las Palmas Park field at a time: 10-15 volleyball games, youth soccer games, birthday parties, picnics, even cricket. If a professional cricket field were to replace it, these hundreds of people would be replaced by 20 adults playing a single sport.

What can you do?

  • Visit www.savelaspalmaspark.org to learn more.
  • Sign the petition.
  • Buy a yard sign to show your support and spread the word.
  • Spread the word to your friends who live in all Sunnyvale districts. Consider donating a yard sign to them.
  • Email the council members. They are the ones who will ultimately make the decision. See the website for details.
  • Show up at city council meetings to show your support. There is a meeting with the public every other Tuesday at 7pm. After some initial announcements, there is a 15 minute section for the public to speak their concerns. Simply your physical presence in support for those who speak helps convey support to the cause. You can speak for 2 minutes if you'd like. You can also attend on Zoom (and speak), but your physical presence would be more impactful. Find out the next meeting date.
  • Be sure to participate in future community surveys!

Anyone knows what happened to the elderly lady behind Safeway on Bernardo?

I often stopped by to give her fresh fruits and sandwiches (ready to eat stuff). She kept asking for recycling items so one time I brought her a huge bag of it so she can get some spending money. About three weeks or so ago, the parking stall was cleaned up. Her van and her pile of belongings are all gone. Anyone knows?

California DMV Knowledge Test: Online or In Person?

Hey everyone, I recently moved to sunnyvale(CA) from Texas, and my Texas driver’s license is about to expire. I want to transfer my Texas driver’s license to a California driver’s license.
For an out-of-state license transfer, is the online option for the DMV knowledge test still available, or is it mandatory to take the written exam in person at a DMV office?
Thanks!

Sunnyvale Police Confront Armed Suspect Following Reported Gun Threat at Local Liquor Store

I was sitting in my apartment when I heard screaming outside my window. At first, I thought it was just children playing, but the screaming continued and became increasingly alarming.
Then I distinctly heard someone yelling, “Help! Help! Help!”

I immediately called police dispatch to report what I had heard, then went outside to investigate.

As I walked down the street, someone across the way began whistling at me. I initially ignored them. When police arrived, I approached the officers and explained that I was the person who had called dispatch.

Seconds later, I heard the exact same scream again. To my surprise, it was coming from the same individual who had been whistling at me.
The officers approached the individual, but as they got closer, they noticed the person was holding a gun. The officers immediately began backing away.

That’s where the video picks up.

After the suspect was taken into custody, I spoke with the officers and provided my contact information.

They explained that the suspect had reportedly pointed a gun in someone’s face at a liquor store around the corner. Police were already searching for him but hadn’t been able to determine his exact location until my call to dispatch came in.
Apparently, they also had a drone searching the area overhead.

It wasn’t until I approached the responding officers and pointed out the individual who had been screaming and whistling at me that they were able to confirm his location.

What started as me hearing someone screaming for help outside my apartment turned out to be part of an active police search for an armed suspect.

Not sure how many are you aware of this book. While this book is kind of a memoir by the author, it also describes Sunnyvale in the 70s. I enjoyed reading this book!

Does anyone have a recommendation for a licensed C27/D49 contractor who can help us with Sunnyvale street tree permit? The city requires us to plant a street tree for a home remodeling project.

FUHSD Trustee Candidate Jason Lin says being inclusive is “preparing students to fail”

REPOSTING FROM CUPERTINO SUBREDDIT

Ok y’all. I posted about this guy yesterday because of an ad I saw where he showed the UC application stats for Monta Vista and Homestead. I went digging down the internet rabbit hole and found an hour-long podcast interview and some of the stuff he said seriously concerned me.

The phrase “in real life, you don’t get a participation trophy” is true in some ways, but we ABSOLUTELY cannot apply that as a blanket statement to inclusion. Cupertino (and the whole Bay) is a wonderfully diverse place, and governing board members should absolutely support inclusion in our schools. It’s disappointing to me that he views it this way. His emphasis on UC Berkeley and UCLA acceptance rates also tells me that he only gives a shit about the kids with high grades who go to a prestigious college and get a prestigious job.

Also, on another forum, when asked about student mental health support programs, he said ‘support is not success’, and that we should evaluate the effectiveness of these programs. I do agree that we should always look to improve upon these programs, but based on his tone it felt like he was basically calling them a waste of money, and I don’t think he has any intention of supporting new initiatives or building upon existing ones.

Suicides in the Bay among students are dramatically high compared to other parts of the country. I think Palo Alto High has had four suicides in the past 6 years, and although FUHSD hasn’t had one since 2022, I still remember finding out about that poor boy from Homestead who jumped off the golden gate. It was such a devastation to our community and I can’t help to think what could have been done better by our district to prevent this.

Students NEED these programs and they need to know they’re safe in their schools. Although Rosa Kim isn’t the perfect candidate, she’s pretty damn good and LEAGUES better than this guy. Jason Lin certainly does not have my vote for Trustee Area 3.

If you are an FUHSD parent or community member, look up your trustee area on the map and VOTE!

Car accident - looking for footage

Post image
37 Upvotes

This is a long shot. I’m was involved in a car accident yesterday night 10/13/26 at 10:00pm at the intersection of W Maude and N Mathilda Ave. I was a blue Toyota driving on W Maude, while the white suv infinity was driving on N Mathilda.

In my lane and across from me, the green turn signals turned on with cars turning left. Then the turn signal turned red and the signal to turn straight turned on. I was stopped at the light and then proceeded forward. Next thing I know, I see a white infinity suv coming at me in my blind spot and I swerve trying not to get hit. Thankfully no known injuries for either party, we were able to pull off to the side of the road, and we were able to drive our vehicles home.

I did call the police to document the incident, but because we were not blocking traffic and no injuries reported, they said they weren’t going to show up. We did exchange information and I have a claim open with my insurance. But any additional footage would be awesome. I have contacted Valero, but no response. And the great gas station doesn’t have a phone number, but will go in person to ask.

I’m looking for camera footage if anyone has it, as I
don’t have dash cam footage nor does the other party.

1b1b apartment recommendations

Hello,

I’m moving to mountain view area for my job and would love to get some apartment recommendations.

I’m looking for a 1b1b in Mountain View, sunnyvale, santa clara areas

My budget is ideally around 3.5k

I’m looking for a luxury building where both my car and packages are safe. I’ve been reading a lot of reviews where people complain about these 2 things.

I want good amenities like a gym, pool, jacuzzi, tennis courts

All the prometheus apartments which is in most reddit recommendations seem to be 4k+ which is out of my budget.

My shortlist:
- Monticello
- tamarind square
- windsor apartments
- Encasa
- mansion grove

There seems to be one called Eaves middlefield which is cheaper but it doesn’t have in unit laundry
