Hi all! this is a decklist adapted from a post on October 8th by @ The_Verd29 on twitter. Check out the original list if you're interested!!
Mega Dragonite has interested me ever since it released in Ascended Heroes. It kind of seems like this card was created to be good, right?? 330dmg is a very common benchmark for stage 2 ex's and stage 1 megas (starmie, lopunny, sharpedo), and pecharunt has shown how powerful force switch abilities can be. Not to mention, it has a titanic 370hp, along with a Dragonair with a very powerful ability of its own (if it has an energy attached, it can search for any evolution pokemon and put it into your hand).
However, for as many strengths as it seemingly has, it also has quite a few weaknesses. That dragon typing isn't doing it any favors, as it can't benefit from hitting for weakness, and is in turn one-shot by Lillie's Clefairy. Its energy cost can be very difficult to fulfill as well, which isn't helped by the fact it discards two of them after attacking. It definitely doesn't help its setup that the only dratini available is 80hp and can't be searched with poffin. Also, shockingly, 330 damage comes a bit short on some relevant megas, like greninja, excadrill, and lucario.
Despite its really cool ability, I dismissed mdnite almost immediately after release, mostly because of that freebie mega dragonite + dynamotor eelektrik deck. I know some others experimented with pairing it with Blaziken, but either way, it was just inconsistent and suuper slow.
I came across the list I based this on, on Twitter, and immediately had to check it out. I know Crispin has been a very successful card in a ton of different lists, but I wasn't sure if it plus powerglass would be enough to fund Dragonite. And it turns out, it actually works surprisingly well!!
Evolutionary Guidance Dragonair is able to propagate pokemon in the same way that Champion's Call Gabite is able to, except it doesn't have the Cynthia's pokemon restriction. The optimal setup can feel really strong, with Mega Kanga sitting in the active, being fat and drawing cards, while filling out your bench with Lumiose City (works extremely well here since you aren't attacking for a couple turns at the start of a match!!). Volcanion ex is a great tech for making up the extra damage needed to snag the KO on all of the 340 and 350hp pokes, with the extra benefit of denying fezandipiti on KO.
As for my changes to the original list, I thought a 1-1 Mega Lopunny would really help Dragonite out. Along with offering shred damage, it also gives the deck a quick and efficient attacker that can be super helpful for going against basic box and picking off lower hp pokemon that would just be super inefficient to attack using dragonite. Not to mention it has great synergy with dragonite's ability!! it's really cool!!! I would just use rapid fire combo, but it requires a lot of energy commitments in a deck with a scarce energy economy and no great way to recover said attached energies.
My question for yall:
Secret Box feels difficult to use here!! The tool and supporter search is really useful but I have to wonder if there's any other one that would be a better fit.
I would also really like to make room for a Psyduck given that my locals has a bunch of Dusknoir roaming around. However, I'm not sure where to cut cards without cutting consistency. Maybe a boss?
