Giving Recommendations Hidden/Forgotten Gems - 🎃😱Horror Edition: October 2026🎃😱

This is a monthly feature in which we, the mod team, share the gems we've found in our reading lists. Here are last month's and last year's recs.

Once again, the season of ghosts and ghouls is upon us.

We're offering some series that will make you question if you should be reading at 3 A.M., when the barrier of the world of the living and dead is at its thinnest. Unease of the unknown is always something people are scared of, and romance tends to blossom between the leads.

We'd love to hear your recommendations. Please add them to the discussion in the comments. When doing so, please keep in mind to:

  • If available, use the English cover art of your recommended series.
  • Name of the series
  • Where to read it officially

We always recommend checking the official version; please do not name unofficial sources.

This Month's Ghastly Recommendations💀:

How to Survive a Haunted School - Where to Read: Tapas (for now)

Her brother Raven has died in the prestigious Saint Gloria Academy under mysterious circumstances. Melody has one chance to save him: turn back time a full year and become a student herself. However, what she walks into is a death trap dressed in prestige. Something rotten is hidden in the halls of St. Gloria. The students lie to each other, ghosts hunt the living, and while everyone feels something is wrong, only a handful know the truth. Those who know too much are buried like the secrets that the school holds.

Raven is alive, walking the halls, avoiding his sister, and the main question of the series is what did he see the first time, and why can't he tell her?

Melody has been given the ability to see the dead, and that drags her into horrors she never asked for, all for a brother who won't look at her. Her only real ally is Noah, the mysterious student council president. He's always one step ahead of the lurking darkness. But in a place so twisted, you can never quite trust if he's protecting her or playing a longer game.

The horror works because it’s not subtle. The ghosts have teeth, the art commits to the atmosphere, and the mystery is something that hooks you. So, if you enjoy horror that builds genuine unease rather than relying on cheap jump scares, this is worth your time. Just keep the lights on.

How to Survive in a Horror Game - Where to Read: Tapas (for now)

Our protagonist is suddenly thrust into her favorite mystery murder game as Arviche Green, a supporting character doomed to die. To make matters worse, she wakes up inside the house of the prime suspect, Duke Leikas Learmond, serving as the in-house tutor to his niece and nephew.

The stakes are set instantly. Arviche knows her virtual lives are dwindling, and she has to juggle dodging the main storyline while desperately trying to uncover the truth.

Arviche is intelligent, observant, and emotionally strong without ever feeling unrealistically perfect. The author nails that specific kind of tension where you know something is terribly wrong, but you can't say or do anything because it would only make you look more suspicious.

The male lead, Duke Leikas is in that grey flag area that makes him compelling. He has a subtle yandere vibe that lets him be both terrifying and a bit adorable at times. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, and the story's psychological tension can be heavy.

But, if you're looking for something suspenseful, different, and full of genuine psychological stakes, I really think it's worth giving a chance.

Brand New Series - How to Survive in the Horror Novel I Wrote

Writing horror was her passion. Now, it's her nightmare.

The beloved bestseller author Ha Ji-an has the most amazing story to tell you about her cursed keyboard. It's like a magic keyboard that makes her dreams come true. But when she accidentally summons Joo Woo-geum, the ruthless serial killer from her own book, he doesn't cut her down.

He confesses his love. It's hard for Jian to come to terms with the fact that Woo-geum is a monster who kills the people he loves. She really wants to change the story, so she tries to rewrite his fate. But there's this unknown force that keeps erasing her words.

I'm so sorry, but I'm afraid there's no way for you to escape a killer when you're the one who gave him life.

Discussion - Open The Mother Lives and the Siblings are Adorable. Rejoice and Fangirl with me Please [The Youngest Has Much to Hide]

• Upvotes

Short and Sweet

- MC is not an adult in a child’s body (i swear)
- The mother is alive! And cool!
- The MC was getting babied and loved even though they thought she was a son in the beginning
- ALL THE SIBLINGS ARE NOT ONLY ADORABLE BUT ALSO LOVED BY THEIR PARENTS
- The father isn’t a cold, unavailable duke of the north. From the first chapter he is joking around and showing emotion and does that with everyone. He’s not a 100% goofball just a nice, gentle, funny guy
- The MC, her siblings, and the ML are all treated like kids by the parents, grandfather, knights, and staff

—>So no threatening children or adultifying them or obvious bias other than being a bit more delicate and affectionate with the youngest (plus she’s the MC and they baby girls there in the north because they’re rare so they’re more delicate afterwards finding out she’s a girl)

—> They don’t do that thing where everyone only cares about the MC so spouses and siblings don’t matter

First things first!!!

Link to my post about a sibling scene from this comic yesterday.

I can only add so many photos but I swear it’s worth it and directly relevant to this conversation!

Plot

40 official chapters out right now! 52 unofficial if you’re impatient like me

A little kid finds out that they’re in a book (I promise mc is not an adult in a child’s body) and wants to save the world and their favourite character. So when he saves her she clings to him and asks him to adopt her. Eventually he does. However the dad thinks she’s a boy so he adopts her as his son.

I can’t think of how else to explain the shocking/cool parts without spoiling too much.

Discussion

I’m distraught I can only add 20 pics so please share your favourite scenes too and I’ll share some too!!

The mother and the older brother aren’t shown alot in the beginning so I can’t talk about them as much yet. But the whole family is so funny and sweet.

I really wish there was a sister too but I know that’s just being greedy at this point. Part of me wishes the MC was actually a son for the same reason. We rarely see the so s babied or older sisters (and honestly all the siblings) not treated like mini-parents or villains.

I can’t think of a similar book rn but I feel like if you like Dungeon and Crayons, I Became the Youngest Sister-in-law of the Ruined Reverse Harem’s Male Leads, or SpyxFamily then you’ll like this. But I’m biased so do you disagree?

Please tell me your thoughts or favourite parts or any suggestions you have.

Discussion - Open Most romances in OI are bad

I love romance. I really, really do! But it actually has to have romance, and the characters have to have chemistry.

Sometimes I feel like OI authors have never been in a relationship in their lives, or even talked to a man, or honestly, to another human being.

For example, the MC or the ML saves the other, and they fall completely in love. That's not how it works! In real life, if a hot shirtless firefighter covered in oil saves you, you don't fall in love. You might want to sleep with him, but love? Saving or helping someone does not equal love.

Or just because the MC and ML are gentle to each other, they instantaneously fall in love. Is like if in real life, just the other day, I gave bread to a man living on the street, and he instantly fell in love with me, kissed my feet, got a job, became a millionaire, and bought a mansion for me!

Sometimes it's just "admiration" because the MC "isn't like other girls." But admiration isn't equal to love. It can be part of it, sure, but it's not enough.

A good romance is one where you can put two characters in a room with nothing to do, and they can just talk, and it will still be entertaining and endearing.

But I understand why authors write like this, it's because the ML is usually so bland and his only purpose in life is the MC, so they can't even talk about anything real. Seriously, think about living with someone all your life without even having a proper conversation. How can you call that love? How would any woman want to live like that?

I like romance, good romance, but most of the time, the romance actually ruins the story. I'm just so tired of it.

Ludovika from gets way too much hate, and honestly, I will defend her forever. She’s not completely reviled in the fandom, but people love to blame her for everything when she was literally just a girl trying to survive.

First off, Elizabeth always drags her for being a poor viscount’s daughter who "climbed the social ladder" through Heidi to get close to Max, Albie, and Johan. But Ludovika wasn't out here seducing anyone or clout-chasing. Her bestie courted her, and she accepted. Marrying your bff who happens to be the future emperor is a no-brainer compared to being forced into an arranged marriage with a random noble who could turn out to be abusive (literally what happened to Shuri).

And the claim that she "led Johan on"? Bffr. She got engaged to the guy who asked her out and went to share the good news with her friend group. A guy being obsessed with you doesn't mean you owe him a relationship.

People also love to say she "ruined Shuri’s life," but Ludovika was literally dead while Johan was out here abusing Shuri over his own unhealthy obsession. Ludovika isn't responsible for a man's toxic behavior after she’s gone.

Lastly, blaming her for Albie neglecting his own family is wild. She didn't force him to abandon his wife and kid, she was a dying mother begging a powerful friend to protect her child so he wouldn't be left defenseless. Blaming a dying woman for a grown man's terrible choices is crazy. She deserves so much better.

Ludovika is just shuri who wasn't actually protected well.

Maybe like, little miss sidekick (where fl and ogfl end up getting along). Or some stuff where villainess/misunderstood fl gets along with the ogfl who’s overprotected by male leads and constantly misconstrues the fl’s intentions. Thank you!!

Rant This story feels weirdly hollow, kind of strangely meanspirited, and doesn't make all too much sense. (A Marriage Chosen for Love Over Politics)

Post image
114 Upvotes

Actually reading the first 8 chapters. The plot feels like it wants to tell us one thing while showing us another thing.

I also realize just how many of these Other woman/scorned plots wouldn't work if the perceived perpetrator was just a normal person, and not legit the spawn of satan.

It opens with the usual breaking off of an engagement The usual slop of the genre, but takes a slight twist in being from mostly from the prince's and the 'other woman's perspective.

Yeah he was a shit bag, but the king and queen made sure he paid proper compensation for wasting the FL time.

But then suddenly the other woman just... becomes the most crazed vile person in existence. She is stupid. (To note she apparently graduated from the same school as the prince and female lead, and the FL legit said she was actually pretty charming and smart)

The story says and she herself says it was due to her being a lowly baron's daughter. (Ignoring the fact that she should still have enough common sense to not call orphans dirty ect)

The story presents as a failing due to lack of status, but she'd be insane regardless of if she was from a higher family or not. (I also like the page where the story pretty much slut shames her for practicing safe sex and using contraceptives so she wouldn't be popping out 3-4 babies)

Of course, I'm reading too much into this. This story was written for women who probably got cheated on by their boyfriends, or their crushes ended up with another girl so they can imagine them having a miserable life.

But it doesn't even do that well since the FL doesn't seem to... care. Not in the sense that she is washing her hands of them, but legit in the sense she doesn't even seem to mind.

There is legit one page where she is wishing them the best and hope their tea party is going well while being 100% genuine. She legit holds no grudges.

So we don't even get the satisfaction of the FL acting smug. She herself seemed to want them to succeed after she got her compensation. (Something she didn't even seem to care about either until her family insisted)

I think the cherry on top is that she married a guy that was 15 years older than her. Hell I don't mind large age gaps like that in most stories, but how its presented here is that she is the 'super smart girl boss that married into the proper family unlike idiots who wants to marry people they love.

This is ignoring the fact that if both history and fiction has taught is, being in a loveless marriage can bring about far WORSE problems than marrying someone of a lower status. (Affairs, attempting to kill your own spouse, child neglect)

Of course this is just ignoring the fact that there wouldn't really be a plot if the crown princess legit was just... a normal person. (Not even talking about their child ect.)

It's just weird misery porn with very little nuance or substance. It's try to subvert the 'marry for love' but the only way it can do that is to make the person who are marrying for love to be so vile and cruel that of course it would seem like a bad idea.

Ignoring the fact these would be all bad traits if the other person was of a higher status regardless.

Discussion - Open I genuinely don't get it-Why SPOON is being hated so much regarding her recent adaptation-The Forgotten Field?

Thumbnail
gallery
80 Upvotes

I saw tremendous amount hate for her in platforms like-pinterest (there's a huge hate wave) , ig , tumblr , comments , novel forum's and even in reddit.

  1. Apparently on pinterest it started from one misinformation on the character design of ayla (slide-3) and the fact ayla's physical description wasn't even mentioned much in the novel😭🥀 Ayla wasn't angelic beauty nor was thalia mentioned to have only seductive beauty [Thalia is literally compared to a pagan goddess and a ancient goddess having all delicate beauty]-so I don't think its spoon fault for making thalia majestic because she is indeed mentioned to be most beautiful woman in the empire besides her mother.
  2. On instagram she is getting hate for not drawing the blood and bone scenes accurately but I don't think its in her hands , the manhwa is literally 15+ rated , she can't go on to draw realistic gore scenes🤷‍♂️ 3)
  3. Also people are bashing her for her illustration of aged characters-Of senevia I can understand her drawing her young looking (since senevia is said to age backwards somehow). Of emperor , I guess she tried to draw lines and make him look old-Every artist have their own way of illustration characters , this is her first time picking up a dark psychological novel , but I saw people bashing her brutally (under her insta post) 4
  4. )Again , people say the illustration are similar to WMMAP , ummmm maybe cuz ITS LITERALLY THE SAME ARTIST😭🤷‍♂️ Disagreeing and criticism is fine but spreading misinformation just to disregard her credibility in character representation or bashing her (leaving hateful comments) is I guess too much? Maybe that is some part of the reason kakaopage is taking down any TFF related content on X
  5. I think sometimes the artist understand the character but takes up time in illustrating it 🤷‍♂️ bashing them brutally is too much tbh , WMMAP was much different then TFF , spoon is taking up a whole new type of story hence she might not be 100% accurate but surely she doesn't deserves to be hated.

I love stories which give me a life lesson and really change my perspective because that way I always remember them in my memory. I honestly didn't think I would like this manhwa so much, but it's peak. In this chapter, when fl said that it's okay to run away sometimes and that she will endlessly strive to love herself. She won my heart and taught me self-love too.

I reread the manhwa all over again, and I loved how realistic and brave she is. I also read the novel and it was even better.

As for the villain, I truly felt a little bit of pity for him until I learned that he didn't save Edward despite having the power and basically murdered him because Edward didn't say what he wanted. He also trapped his soul in one of his roses.

The background in this scene made this chapter all the more fun to read.

Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Please definitely try this out.

Just finished reading, and my eyes are all puffy from the last chapters of The Villainess Flips the Script. The wedding got me all in the feels 🥹 and LUCAAAAA MY BABYYYY 😭😭😭 Im so happy that Ruediger's past life was shown at the end too. It shows that he DID love Luca in his own awkward way. And the reason why the cake is Luca's favourite because his uncle probably always bought it for him during the first life 🥺 And the last panel where Ruediger woke up to see grown-up Luca just like he wished for during the last moments made me BAWLLLL. ABSOLUTE CINEMA.

It was the perfect ending for everyone 🥹 Luca deserves everything good in the world along with his aunty and uncle. Probably my favourite read this year!

Wanting Recommendations Similar manhwas like [You Are at the End of the downfall] FL doesn't want to marry ML again

Recommendations like this one where the FL is married to the ML in the first life where he treats her badly. He had a mistress/lover. He betrayed and killed the FL for the other woman. After she regressed and remembers her past life she did not want to marry the ML in the second life.

ML doesn't remember his past life but in the second wants to be with her but the FL is stopping that from happening.

Wanting Recommendations Is there any manwha with canonly autistic or neurodivergent characters?

More than half of the disabled characters from the manhwas I've read were faking it to survive, and while I understand their point, as an actually disabled person I wish there were more characters that I could relate to. It kind of makes me sad to get all happy about a small rep for it to be just performance:(

Characters with chronic pain also work!

Edit: I'm not specifically looking for only disabled MCs, side characters are welcome too

Wanting Recommendations I find 'head of the household' much better than any other title

• Upvotes

I'm just reading 'the crow's prince,' and I realized that I like the title of 'head of the household' much better, doesn't matter what it is, baroness, countess, duchess, whatever but I prefer the fl in those roles more than fls who got title through marriage, even tho it's 'queen.' Maybe cuz they got it through marriage, but yeah.

That's why I keep hoping for tia in 'i shall master this family,' to not marry perez, cuz then she's be the queen, well alongside, duchess, ofc, but nonetheless, ik how it ends.

Can you all gimme some recs for this?

Some that I've read,

  1. I became the male lead's adopted daughter
  2. i shall master this family
  3. beware the villainess
  4. reporting for duty duchess
  5. i became the villainess's favorite
  6. solitary lady
  7. the age of arrogance
  8. the villainess have more fun
  9. author of my own destiny

Fan Content [Who Made Me a Princess] Athanasia & Claude de Alger Obelia cosplay

My friend, who played the role of Claude, and I have been working on this cosplay for a very long time - this manga inspired us a lot, so we worked hard on the details. And we can say that the cosplay is over, although there is something to fix in the performance. Of course, we really wanted to cosplay-performance the exact moment of Athanasia's coronation in our performance. I would like to do this on a larger scale, but we are often limited by the time and rules of the festivals. We really wanted to show the result, and we hope to be able to shoot a photo shoot with these characters in the future.

Discussion - Open Has anyone that's a poc/black otome-isekai reader ever wonder what its like to wake up white?

I ask this because there was one time some years ago around the start of when I picked up rofan/OI and randomly got the thought while reading ,"man so if she was actually from Korea , then that must mean she's white here and like... not Asian anymore??" and of course that's pretty obvious but hearing yourself say that loud it's kind of freaky ...

And I'd think "doesn't she miss her family? Well, most of FL families in this are crummy, but doesn't she ever miss her culture or anything?"

One post on twitter confirmed my thoughts on this, the paraphrasing version of it being "Imagine waking up in a world that doesn't resemble your home at all with little to no people that resemble your race or folks from your home."

I mean before I had these thoughts I would obviously imagine similar scenarios and Daydreams where I would just wake up looking like myself in pretty dresses and everything. And some manhwa have it so the FL looks the same as she did before just with a different hairstyle.
But I don't know it was just after that thought, I started thinking to myself holy crap imagine waking up white that would be horrifying.

Unless it'd be like a situation of since I'm black, I'd wake up in a Beverly Jenkins novel or something.

Idk, what are y'all thoughts?

Thought this is a unique otome story I found. But BOOM, around chapter 40 the writer is out of ideas on how to make the fml stands out and just did what other otome Isekai protag did... Stealing inventions from their original worlds. Booriiing, how does she even know how to reverse engineer medical scalpel and the composition of stainless steel just from seeing vague memories. 💔🥀

Discussion - Open [Clockwork Lovers] Wholesome romance, healing journey, and green flags abound Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
13 Upvotes

This manhwa is very new, relatively speaking. There's only been 11 chapters, and it's an original work not based on a novel (which annoyed me no end because I wanted to read ahead!).

The story/setting is as follows:

The FL is one of four princesses from the royal family of a holy kingdom. Their family had been the rulers of the most religiously significant region of the continent for 1,000 years. It only fell when the FL's father succumbed to greed and heresy, and a revolution rose up to overthrow him. That led to the deaths of her parents, and her imprisonment in an underground dungeon for three years. She spent those three years in almost complete isolation, reading religious texts and writing materials based on it for her atonement.

Her uncle is the emperor of the neighbouring empire, his sister was the queen of the holy kingdom/the FL's mother. After those three years he writes to her telling her to enter a political marriage with the Duke of an independent duchy close to both the empire and the holy kingdom. The purpose is to try and work towards restoring the royal family of the holy kingdom as reputations and public sentiment towards them have changed in the three years since the revolution's success. It's not really clear yet why this marriage is supposed to help with that.

Anyways, if she doesn't go through with the marriage, she'll never be able to leave. She agrees, thinking that the Duke is still a guy she had known in her childhood and had a crush on. Only to find out that guy went missing two years ago, and his mysterious younger brother has been made into the Duke by her uncle. And that is who she is to marry.

She carries a lot of trauma and angst, not just from the revolution. She is the kind of FL who got trampled on by her own family, though at 11 chapters in we've only just caught some glimpses of it and have no idea why they treated her so poorly. But rumours were spread that she was a wicked woman, delusional, selfish, stupid, incapable, and spitefully jealous of her oldest sister. But of course in reality she is quite intelligent and kind, but because of her reputation she has very low self-esteem.

The central theme of the story seems to be, so far, one of healing for the FL... maybe for the ML too. She assumes everyone around her buys into her reputational faults, but the ML is clearly on her side and the people he is surrounding her with are (for the most part) wanting to treat her well too. She's being able to go outside and see scenery and people she never could, even before the revolution. Her world is expanding, and you can see the ML's efforts to see herself differently starting to work in an early stage.

The ML we know very little about, but so far he is treating her like a pure green flag albeit with some awkwardness and social cluelessness. It's hinted at that he has some history with her that she doesn't seem to remember. Both the FL and the ML's expressions, for the most part, have been pretty stoic and cold. But you've started to see some expressiveness come out the more their relationship grows early on, and I've already had some tickling in the heart moments.

I really wish that there was a novel for me to read ahead, because what's been shown in the 11 chapters has caught my attention fully. I'm all in already. I tried capturing some hints of the vibes in the assembled collages without showing everything. Anyone willing to invest early please jump on board with me, or don't be an idiot like me and let it marinate until there's more than not even a dozen chapters to read lol.
