A few weeks ago, me and my wife made a stop at a small game shop while on a road trip to go see family. We weren't even in there to really buy anything, mostly just to poke around and look at the nerdy stuff.

The guy working the register asked us if we had ever played Magic. We both said no, (unless you count me playing one of the MTG games on the Xbox360 when i was like 8). The guy proceeded to launch into a little discussion about how its a great hobby to make friends or socialize, then he tried to sell us on a 2 pack of commander decks, i explain that money is tight for us and that we can't really afford to drop $50+ on games or anything like that. He understood and gave us a full color set of welcome decks, one of each color.

We kinda forgot about them until a few days after we got home, when i found them sitting in the bottom of my backpack, we busted them out and attempted to play a match while both of us barely knew the rules.

We had a blast just slamming cards down on the table and screaming at each other because we misread a card, forgot to tap/untap a card, or some other dumb thing.

Soon enough, it kinda became a daily thing where we would play a few rounds of magic before bed, and to be honest it's the most amount of fun i've had in years, and especially since we are going through a rough patch, im really grateful that a couple pieces of pretty cardboard could bring this amount of joy into our lives.

I think the hobby has consumed us both.

A 4/4 flyer for 4...with a built in gamble?

Tolarian Academy - Make all of these lands game changers and encourage nonbasic land removal in play. It'll never show up in Bracket 1/2, but if I have to see one more Gaea's Cradle effect making someone 700+ mana off a Scute Swarm, I should be allowed to get some bonus mana off of my Myr's in the 99 of a Bracket 3+

I feel like this is the last thing MTG needs. I wouldn't mind if they turned down the life gaining for a set.

I've realized just how lacking a bunch of creature types are whether its just in commander options or cards in general.
Sharks have 6 commanders and only 22 cards as a whole (what the fuck?)
Werewolves which I always saw as this parallel against vampires in Innistrad only have 5 commanders and 80 cards
I could've sworn Scarecrows would be more popular but they've got 4 commanders and 52 cards

What creature type do you think needs more commanders?

When I first started playing MTG, I was like 10 or 11, and this card was something I pulled. Recently some friends got back into MTG, and I read about this card and checked its price, and it was really cheap, which is surprising because personally it seems pretty good. But that's just my opinion. What do you think?

Recently reorganized my collection and finally put everything into Moxfield, and the very last thing I put in was my old Gyruda Standard deck that morphed into a weird Pioneerish deck that obviously I can't really play with anymore. Forgot that I stuck these two cards in, and of course combined they're worth more than $200. Finding myself dedicated these days to not selling much or any of my collection unless I'm in dire financial straits, and obviously don't want these to just sit in a random deckbox. Is it conceivable to build Bracket 3 Sheoldred without becoming the archenemy on turn 0, or should I just embrace sweatiness and make a Bracket 4?

I was building a Swarmweaver deck on Archidekt and saw alternate arts and realized all that changed between two of them was this thing in the background. Is this a character in Duskmourn or is this just a random easter egg they added? Do other cards have this?

I have a question regarding the Jace, Multiverse Architect Precon Commander. A newbie friend of my bought the precon and is asking me to help her upgrading her deck. We're playing bracket 2-3.

But I struggle to understand how that deck is going to get stronger. I understand the general strategy. But isn't it super slow?

Jace costs 5 CMC. Starting with 4 loyalty counter. The card draw is +1 and the polymorph is -3. So you can only polymorph a creature every fourth turn. I don't understand how you can ever get strong with the polymorph effect.

Maybe I'm missing something

To someone who plays magic mostly for the art, this set was a major concern, and it proved to be what i expected, negatively. The most anticipated cards are just celebrities in colored shirts, in the exact poses they did for the TV show.

This is not the artist's fault. Mtg artists are still the best fantasy illustrators in the world as of now, IMO. But they clearly had to follow strict guidelines to feature everything, like the faces and poses, exactly as seen on the show. Nothing reimagined or redesigned. I do believe it would upset the hardcore fans, but for players like me, it's a shame.

You might have guessed I don't care for Star Trek, but i know enough from Osmosis that bald man here along with spock are fan favorites. I mean, look at him he's just a dude. I see them gathering in the background, but where is the magic? At least put in cool lightning or poses, Dr. who solved this issue in a broad sense, even on celebrity cards. (I'm not a dr who fan if that adds to the argument for you)

The lands are great, as usual, and some of the wildlife creatures are more on par with mtg's excellency, so much so that they clash badly with the celebrity cards.

This isn't UB rant specifically, but if UB artwork is going to be like this going forward, sure, get the torches and pitchforks.

Let's say all of the tokens SoS created are destroyed during combat. Since everything is happening simultaneously, would Cadira still be able to generate rabbits from these destroyed squirrels?
