/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Visiting? Stop Here First!)
Hi all!
Welcome to r/MontereyBay
If you're visiting, moving here etc, this page should serve as a hub to answer many of the most frequent questions we see- where should I eat? What should I do? and so on.
Been meaning to get this page going for a while now after doing the original food-based one a couple years back.
On this post, I'll be linking to a number of community recommendation threads where we've gathered / curated advice for those looking for it.
These are not exhaustive lists, as there are many great places to eat, drink and visit in the area. They are just the recommendations that users made when the threads were posted. If you feel something is "missing," please realize that is why. Other websites like Yelp and TripAdvisor are also helpful for finding information from a broader range.
Where to Eat - (From 2022) - Thread
Where to Visit / What to See (Tourist-Oriented) - (In progress) - Thread
What to Do / See - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)
Day Trip Recommendations - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)
Have a suggestion in regards to how to make this post better / more helpful? Please leave a comment below.

/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Where to Visit / What to See - Tourist Version)
Hi all,
In an effort to build out the new sticky post, we are back to ask for your recommendations for the following category - "Where to Visit / What to See" - oriented for tourists visiting the area.
There will be more threads in the coming weeks where we will share similar recommendations for people who are living here, among other helpful ones.
For this thread though, we would like to gather your thoughts on where to visit and what to see for people visiting the area.
I'll be organizing it in the following way (since I think it will be the most helpful based on how people usually ask questions when they post here)
-Must-See/Do (Think the Aquarium, Big Sur etc. these are the things you'd recommend first if someone has never been here before)
-Highly-Recommend / Great Option (This category will serve as the most broad catch-all. Not something you'd consider a must do, but would be a great option for most visitors depending on their preferences).
-Extras (This category will be maybe more niche-oriented. Things you want to throw out there because people would enjoy it, but probably won't appeal to everyone.)
When replying if you could include the following information, that would be awesome:
Associated Cost - (if applicable)
Time Commitment - (1 hour / Half-Day / etc)
Website - (if applicable)
Family Friendly (yes/no)
I'll post an example for the Aquarium to get things started.
Thanks!

Missing Cat
galleryOur sweet girl Mochi has been missing since she escaped from a cracked window on Oct 15th. We are heartbroken and so desperate to get her home. Any info would be much appreciated <3
About Mochi
- 1.5 years old, female, calico, spayed, microchipped
- Lost near Fitch Village, Parks at Monterey, in Seaside, which is unfortunately filled with lots of outdoor cats, coyotes, and other wildlife
- Indoor, but with occasional supervised outdoor time while waking on a leash
- From prior experiences when she has been outdoors, she seems to know where home is located
- She loves the outdoors and is very curious, but she may be scared now if she is displaced or experiencing danger for the first time
What we’ve done
- Distributed flyers around the neighborhood
- Posted on forums, LoveLost, Facebook, Nextdoor, etc.
- Contacted SPCA
- Searched day and night, with flashlights, on all nearby streets and woodlands
- Left toys, bedding, and dirty clothes outside to attract her
Please let us know if you have a lead, any experiences, or advice!

Happy Sharktober
Video captured today by Sanctuary Cruises off of Marina shows how close these animals get to surfers.
If you want to learn more about our Great White Sharks in Marina check out the Monterey Bay White Shark Project at https://www.montereybaywhitesharks.org/
This shark is tagged and close to one of their acoustic buoys so I’m hoping they will have an ID on it.
I don’t think I’m going to be surfing at Marina any time soon.

Lost Cat
My neighbor’s cat went missing. She’s super sweet and it doesn’t make much sense that she “ran away”. I believe she was taken by someone and we hope she turns up somehow.

New friends to play Magic the Gathering with?
Hello!
I posted about a month ago about looking for some new folks to play some MTG with and I did meet some very cool people but would not mind meeting some more to play with.
I am wondering if anyone out there would be interested in playing some casual Commander games against random decks entirely made from proxy cards (if that matters to you).
I am a 33 year old dude who wouldn't mind playing some games and making new friends.
The people at Mythic and Sacred 8 are nice but too intense for me. Im not a huge fan of how seriously they take the game.
My purpose here is to see if anyone here would like to meet up and play.

Shark video is real: here's why
Many people called this Marina State Beach shark video fake. But a second camera, the Surfline camera at The Sanctuary Beach Resort, captured a breach in the same area at the same time, and California State Parks confirmed a shark breached there.
The video reached me first, before anyone checked a surf camera. For it to be fake, it would have to match a real breach in the same area, in the same minute.
State Parks confirmed the breach, not the phone video's authenticity. Species is not known, but they say it appears to match great white behavior in Monterey Bay in the fall and winter. Shark advisory signs will be posted.
My two reports on this have now been viewed nearly 4 million times across Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
Check the advisory signs before entering the water. If you recorded anything Saturday, send it to my tipline: chriscerney.org/upload

Monterey City Council meeting today, 4:00 - Put Flock Spy Cams on their radar
Afternoon session only. The Council has been hearing a little more about the surveillance cams in Monterey. They need to hear more. Public comments up to 3 minutes long can be made by Zoom or in person
Their HOWTO is https://monterey.gov/your_city_hall/city_council/participate_in_meetings.php
Their agenda for today is https://isearchmonterey.org/OnBaseAgendaOnline/Meetings/ViewMeeting?id=6393&doctype=1
It's nice the Mayor wants to
"Agendize a Discussion Regarding a Resolution Declaring Monterey a Welcoming City for Transgender and Gender-Diverse People and Recognizing Transgender Day of Remembrance (Not a Project Under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and Under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)"
But any jurisdiction that declares it is "welcoming" to non-conforming lifestyles, while subjecting everyone to constant surveillance to ensure conformance with norms, is just performing a stunt.
Come prepared to make short, coherent, punchy comment.

20 year old college student desperate for part time job
I am a 20-year-old college student (male) currently enrolled at Monterey Peninsula College. I really need to find a job somewhere, and Indeed isn’t helping. I could work in Monterey (and the greater area), Marina, and Seaside. I just need anything tbh, entry-level as it would be my first job. I can work full hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sundays only as I’m busy the other days with school work. As I’ve never had a previous job I don’t have any experience which makes it so difficult. I’m tech-savvy, hard working, on time, and a well-kept individual. I’m desperate and just looking for anything tbh, anything helps!!

Looking for an Officiant and Photographer in Carmel-by-the-Sea for a Private Elopement 💍
Hi everyone! My fiancé and I are planning a small, intimate elopement in Carmel by the Sea, and we’re looking for an affordable officiant and photographer.
It will just be the two of us, our officiant, and a photographer, no guests or family. We already have our California marriage license and are hoping to use it soon, so we’re looking for vendors who may have availability in November.
We’re hoping to keep everything simple, romantic, and affordable. We don’t want a big production or an elaborate ceremony, just a beautiful, intimate moment together in Carmel or along the coast, with a few photos to remember the day.
If you have recommendations for budget friendly local officiants or photographers, or know someone who offers simple elopement packages, I’d really appreciate it! If you’re a vendor yourself, please feel free to share your pricing and availability.
Thank you so much! 💍🤍

PG City Council to vote on resolution prohibiting the use of City-owned facilities by ICE
Please write to the Pacific Grove City Council BEFORE WEDNESDAY 21 OCTOBER 2026 and urge them to approve the resolution prohibiting the use of City-owned facilities for federal immigration enforcement activities, as outlined in the upcoming Council agenda (6B).
Our city should stand for the dignity, safety, and rights of everyone in our community. Put your values into action and show ICE they are NOT welcome to kidnap and terrorize people here.

Honest advice around planning a wedding for July 2027 here?
I am Indian and have been planning a September 2027 wedding in Monterey. We have to get an auspicious time from our priest for the wedding, and I just learned that for some astrological reason, August-October 2027 may be blocked out.
I am feeling really sad right now because the entire wedding is planned around being in Monterey and enjoying the bay views. We are planning on incorporating the Perry house, the memory garden, and the ferrante ballroom at the Marriott. Would May or July be absolutely foggy and gray and ugly? Will there be any point to being in the ferrante ballroom in these months, or will the fog cover everything anyway and will we be looking at gray skies?
I know I am probably sounding a bit melodramatic lol but I have put so much energy into this plan. I just want some feedback around what the wedding in Monterey would be like in a month that isn’t August, September, or October.

Broken Social Scene @ golden state theater - benefitting Monterey HS music program, no promotion so far
This is mainly for my fellow 00s indie rock lifers- Golden State Theater quietly added a show with Broken Social Scene benefitting the Monterey High School music program, and has so far not promoted it at all despite the show being in 3 weeks. This is an amazing band and the benefit aspect is nice to see, i'd encourage everyone to check them out in case you might be interested in going.
Tickets are so far selling very slowly and having gone to the recent New Pornogaphers show at GST, it feels embarassing when we as an area cannot turn out to support these shows from notable independent bands and end up with a mostly empty theater. I assume those performers walk away with a feeling of "well we're obviously never playing here again" which is a shame since I appreciate that GST and the promoters/presenters that work with them do consistently bring a couple shows from this part of the music world each year.
All to say, if you already like BSS definitely look into going, if you don't know them feel free to give it a chance in case you might like to go.
https://goldenstatetheatre.com/shows/broken-social-scene/
Also GST staff if you're on here, the social accounts should announce & promote this show

Training exercise?
Walking with my 2 boys on the Pacific Grove trail this afternoon and we had to sit and watch this helicopter and boat. Helo was going in circles, getting close to the water, then taking off back toward land before doing a left turn and heading back out.
Just wondering if anyone knows who it is and what they’re doing?

STATE PARKS CONFIRMS: SHARK BREACHED OFF MARINA STATE BEACH
California State Parks has confirmed that a shark did breach in the area of Marina State Beach around 12:26 p.m. Saturday, October 17th.
I received this video from beachgoers. The file data shows it was recorded on an iPhone 17 Pro Max near The Sanctuary Beach Resort in Marina. State Parks staff reviewed the Surfline camera at that location, and I was told it captured a shark breaching at the time the video was recorded.
Some viewers questioned whether the video was AI-generated. State Parks has now confirmed the breach.
The type of shark is not known, but State Parks says it does appear to match the behavior of great white sharks that return to Monterey Bay in the fall and winter months. Shark advisory signs will be posted immediately.
Did you see it, or have video from the beach? Send it to me.

CLE (College Living Experience) in Monterey
I'm thinking about this program for my daughter, an autistic adult who's planning to transfer to a 4 year school next year. We're hoping for UCSC but if she needs to go further away, she'll need support. Does anyone know anything about it or have any experience to share?
Edit for clarity: I'm talking about a specific program for autistic college students called CLE here, not the college experience in general. You can see how it's very hard to search for reviews.

Does anyone know what happened today at Marina State Beach?
Around 3:40pm / 4pm today (Monday 10/19) there was an ambulance that rushed to Marina state beach (off reservation road) and then saw few other rescue trucks and one towing a jet ski. I’m assuming it’s a water rescue then? Just wondering since it was Saturday the shark breach happened there and coast guard was putting up the advisory signs. Hope whatever it is everyone is okay 🙏
