Rant Stop assuming you got fired.

Please stop assuming the worst and thinking you were fired because you can't access the schedule or one of the websites, the manager doesn't respond to you, ect. Way too many of y'all jump to this first conclusion way too often. It takes alot to get fired from McDonald's and they will let you know if you are. Think logically not emotionally.

Discussion A post for new employees or for those who have just been recently hired! (US)

As an employee of McDonald's for several years, I thought I would make a lengthy post that you can read if you have just been recently hired at McDonald's and want to know what to expect as well as any advice you may need. Feel free to ask any questions that are not covered in this post.

Your first day: Make sure you are at least 15 minutes early on your first day. They will definitely be paying attention if you are late. You should be assigned a crew trainer, or someone that will be training you. Make sure you ask any questions you may have. Do not hesitate to ask questions, or ask to be shown something again if you didn't get it the first time. It's okay if you aren't picking things up right away. It's only your first day. The managers may get annoyed with you if you haven't picked things up in a week or two, but you won't lose the job. They will usually just give you a different position. Like for example if you aren't picking up running for front, they will have someone teach you how to hand out in drive thru or take orders in drive thru instead. You will eventually find a position that works for you.

Your hours and schedule: Don't expect to get full hours right away. If you applied to be full time, you may only get part time hours for the first week or two while you're being trained. Your hours will pick up eventually. It's extremely important that you are clear with the manager that makes the schedules what your availability and desired hours are. I recommend writing it down on paper for them. They will do the best they can to accommodate your schedule but you can't expect them to remember your availability off the top of their head when they have 30+ other employees to keep track of. They are generally very good at giving you the hours you want and remembering what days or times you can't work, but they do forget sometimes.

The work environment: McDonald's is an extremely fast paced environment. There is always something to do, or something that needs to be done. You may be expected to multitask or do multiple jobs at once. This normally isn't expected of you right away. When you're still being trained, you will only learn one area at a time. But the longer you are there and the more experience you get, the more you will be trained at multiple areas and be expected to do more than one thing. Expect rushes. There will be periods of the day where we normally get very busy. This is usually the morning breakfast rush when people are on their way to work between 7-9 AM, the lunch rush between 11AM-1 pm, the after school rush between 2:30PM-4:30PM and the dinner after work rush between 5PM-7PM. There are also days of the week where we normally are very busy. This is usually Fridays-Sundays. Mondays and Tuesdays are generally our slowest days and Wednesdays and Thursdays are in between. Obviously this will differ everywhere but that's the usual at my store. Managers often times get very stressed and it may seem like you are being yelled at or criticized. Don't take it personal. The problem with being a manager is they are literally responsible for everything during their shift. If anything goes wrong, they will be the ones that are blamed by corporate. Seems unfair, but that's how it is. If things go bad enough, they could even be written up. So they may seem strict at times because they will get in trouble if things aren't running as smoothly as they should be. Expect a stressful work environment. I will not sugarcoat it for you. McDonald's is a VERY stressful job. That doesn't mean you can't handle it though. The longer you work there, the easier it gets to navigate the stress and it becomes second nature. That being said, it's not worth sacrificing your mental health either. If the job truly is too much for you to mentally handle, do consider looking elsewhere. It's not supposed to be a toxic environment, but often times it can be. When everyone is under a lot of stress, it can sometimes create a really bad environment. Not every day will be like that though. It also largely depends on management. I won't lie to you, a lot of McDonald's has very bad management. That is what will make or break the store. So your work environment and stress level will depend on how good or bad management is at your store.

Discipline: There are three forms of disciplinary actions. Written warning, or a write up. You will be asked to read and sign a piece of paper that says in writing exactly what your offense was. You are allowed to disagree with a write up and explain your side of the story, but that dosent necessarily mean the write up is void. A write up is usually pretty non serious unless you're wracking up a bunch of them in a short period of time. It's basically just a written warning that this is what you did wrong and your signature on it verifies that you were told what you did wrong and that you were talked to about it. Just don't repeat your mistake and you should be just fine. There's usually no form of punishment beyond that. Those are usually the main form of disclipline. The second form of discipline is suspension. You will be asked to not come to your scheduled shifts for a specific length of time and you will not be paid for the time you are out. Another way this could be done is cutting your hours. This wouldn't be a full suspension where you are completely taken off the schedule for a length of time, but you will be scheduled less days or less hours, usually only temporarily. This is definitely more serious but usually isn't done as a first resort. Suspension is usually done if you have gotten several write ups and are continuing to make the same issues over and over again despite written warnings. It is possible for suspension to be their first form of disciplinary action against you but that's usually if it's quite serious such as drug use/alcohol use on the job, harassment of management or other employees, or stealing. The last form of disciplinary action is termination, or losing the job, aka getting fired. This usually only happens for severe things. In the several years I've been working at McDonald's, only two people have been actually fired. This usually follows a suspension if you keep repeating the same issue. The best thing to remember here is to learn from your mistakes. If you get a disciplinary action against you, just don't do it again. It is very unlikely for the issue to be pushed beyond the disciplinary action if you just don't repeat the same thing again. I've been written up twice in the several years I've worked there, but it never went beyond that. Writeups are sent to corporate and they can stay on your record, but nobody will push the issue if you behave. It's a requirement to keep your writeups in your employee file so if you DO get terminated at any time, they have proof that you were warned about your actions and that you know about it (hence the signature), and that you kept repeating the same issue and that they have a valid reason to terminate you. But it is extremely unlikely that a couple writeups will get you terminated.

That's the best advice I have for you right now. Please comment on this post if you have further questions and I will try to respond to as many of them as I can. Any other specific things or concerns you have you should talk to whoever is in charge at your store. This post is just outlining the things that are most common at pretty much every McDonald's regardless of location. However keep in mind every McDonald's is different and runs differently. This is just a basic guide. I cannot tell you what is going to happen at your location. So if you post a question such as "I did this and this, what will happen to me, will I get in trouble/fired?" That will depend on your store and how they choose to handle it.

I’ve already organized it before and it got messed up when I came back the very next day… 🫩 I’m trying to make it as intuitive as possible but I don’t work grill so IDK what makes the most sense where. It’s just annoying to have to play Jenga with the dishes every close.

Discussion (USA) I impulsively quit (without a 2 week notice) a little over a week ago and now I kinda want to go back.

When I quit my manager said she said I could come back anytime cuz she really likes me. When I quit I just said I was having personal/family issues, my manager offered that I can come back 2 days a week but I declined and quit anyways.

In a few months I'll be starting a 6 month certificate program which will be 3 days a week and will have an externship with it. And when I was working at McDonald's they were really good with my schedule when I had other things going on ( like appointments and stuff).

I've already been removed from Lifelenz and the other app they use.

Discussion Our store has been McSold (AUS)

The store I work at is being sold by our large organisation to a first-time owner-operator.

Honestly, I’m disappointed by the decision, although I had a feeling it was only a matter of time and I understand at the end of the day it was what was right for the business. I’m relatively high up in restaurant management, and we’ve been told that if we don’t like the change, there are always opportunities to move to their other stores within the organisation. However, at this stage, we’re all have to stay on through the transition.

I’m interested to hear from anyone who has experienced this kind of change. Budgets being tightened significantly, the impact on day-to-day operations, and most likely having someone constantly breathing down my neck.

Apparently as a part of this process our management team will be meeting with him as he is just getting started, and will be present in the store leading up to January.

For those who have been through a similar transition, what was your experience like? Did things change much under the new owner, particularly in terms of staffing, budgets, expectations and management style?

Rant Breakfast Meal Prices (CAN)

The amount of times I've gotten yelled at for the prices of things when we all know that workers don't make the prices is absurd. I work at a location in Canada and for us we have a sausage muffin meal deal (muffin hashbrown and small coffee) for $5. Everytime I take a customers order they will say "I'd like the $5 breakfast meal deal." So I ring it up and most of times I'll have no issues, but sometimes I will. For example, someone will say they want a medium or large coffee with the meal and then get mad that it's more expensive (regular price for the meal deal is $5.25 and that's already including tax.) That no matter how many times I explain to them that there's an uncharge if you get a drink that's not a small coffee they still get mad. Also for deals on the app. It specifically says what size and what drink you can get with it so if you get something else there's gonna be an upcharge. Why yell at the minimum wage worker who doesn't decide these things.

Rant After almost 3 years I finally put my 2 weeks in (USA)

• Upvotes

This is genuinely just a pure unfiltered rant that may not even be coherent, but if there was a place to post this i'd hope it'd be here.

I've worked at my location for almost 3 years. I first got hired when I was 17 while in highschool as I had just moved to my state and desperately needed a job. I was practically hired on the spot and while I wasn't given an official schedule for almost 4 months, I was working just about 40 hours a week just being called in for the first year I was employed. I lived and breathed my location, I declined family vacations, missed my Senior Prom(although I didn't really have anyone to go with anyways) worked some overnights just to head into school 5 hours later and for a big chunk of the job was willing to come in to any shift with 30 minutes notice. I became less devoted once college hit and I needed more time to study, but all around continued to work as much as I could. I begged to be a Crew trainer for almost my entire time working there after the first year and was always told "learn this" and when I did learn it there would be some other reason I needed to wait. Despite this they continue to have me train new hires as all of our crew trainers quit.

Due to some things in the workplace that don't even apply anymore, we got a new GM which gave us 3 different AGM's the one prior to this one being a former manager who became an absolute monster of a human being when working when she became the AGM. The new GM has single handedly lost 2 entire nightshifts since starting working here last December and almost our entire veteran staff has quit since she started working. On her first day working she sent 2 people home and had them talk to the supervisor later to "show she in charge" She constantly undermines the managers would leads to new hires being unwilling to listen to them and ever since I had the audacity to get a doctors note for something has had a personal vendetta against me. She decided 3 months ago that all of the veteran employees had to go and that people being late and calling out was now a huge issue. Other employees who are 2+ hours late every day got warnings and me being 30 minutes late twice in the last month for genuine reasons (that were already discussed and solved with the shift managers) had me get a one week suspension but delayed because she wanted me to still work the next 2 weeks scheduled shifts. She builds and fosters exclusion towards any employees she doesn't like has made our location a genuinely miserable place to work at.

She has personally turned me from someone who would work from 8am to 11pm just to help out into someone who barely wants to work 3 hours when she is there. I used to love working here and while there are some people I will absolutely miss I can't continue working for a place like this.

Rant Anyone else never been trained for the register(USA)

The first time I worked at McDonald's (my first fast food job) I remember being trained to ONLY use the Kiosks, if a customer was to approach the register you'd be told to direct them to the kiosk. I obviously followed this rule as closely as possible but there were times when it was super busy or a stubborn customer would refuse to use it so I'd have to use the register. Only problem was I was NEVER trained to use the register, and I've never even used a register before, so I made a lot of mistakes and somehow it was always my fault 🫠 eventually one of my fave coworkers showed me during her break which was a lifesaver, but man it was super annoying

Rant Im tired of working g here (USA)

They depend on me way to much. To the point where they are changing my schedule so i work weekdays and am off the weekend. My coworkers are like friends to me, i love them, but sometimes they say or do something that makes me question them. Ive had multiple people ask me if a quarter pounder was a double quarter pounder. Like just READ the box, heck even the color of the box is different. Or they'll ask if the regular quarter is special, when the special one is sitting in the black tray on the side. -_-

We (night crew) had a meeting with the morning managers where one thing they talked about was our times. "I get it, we get rushes too, but we keep our times up." They dont get rushes like we do. Sure they get people going to work/school, leaving school. But they dont get the sports games every night, the kids getting dinner and trashing the place, the parents that dont feel like cooking dinner so they order 50 things for the family.

For the past month, every night, weve had a line of cars wrapped around the building. They say our rush hours are from 5-7, but its actually from 4-10/11, ALL NIGHT. And im not bragging when i say this but i am the best crew member on table. It is genuinely killing me. I get headaches every night, some dont fully go away when i take medicine. I just cant do this anymore.

My gf is thinking of getting her masters degree in a different country, I just have to wait one more year.

Employee question How long do Paradox emails take? (USA)

I had my interview two hours ago and I accepted the job offer and put in my personal information including my SSN. He said I should get two emails from paradox but it’s been two hours and I haven’t received them. I had a job at a different locations in my town back in 2024 for a day. I only did my training videos and never went back. Could that be the reason for the delay??

Discussion (UK) The amount of customisation that people are able to do in USA, I feel happy working in UK.

From the recents posts I saw on Reddit, the amount of customisation you can do is just insane.

Bevs might be a nightmare. I don't usually work bev cell but I think we just have remove things, not add.

Here food is just, extra of something or just add sandwich sauce or bacon or cheese. I have seen someone post "no salt" like you want to cook a fresh patty?

We sometimes do get some weird requests from customers, so we used to use "Ask me" and just do it but it's strictly against rules now.

Is it regular over there? Or am I just seeing one of many?

This woman is thin as heck, always DT, always orders the same nuggets and 2 burgers.

Shes also quite rude. Doesnt say hi or anything. Very short words, very few of em. Ive only worked for bout 2 months but already know her to be a regular.

Saw her come in. Tapped the items she wants before even saying anything, shes aghast, but drives to next window

Ask her how shed like to pay: "card" (just like every other time)

Just wanted to share as i had a shitty day otherwise
