Modeling Topology Megathread

Topology is the geometric structure of a polygonal mesh. It is the layout of the edges and vertices which define the shape of a mesh. A particular shape can be represented by many different topologies.

Mesh topolgy can never be considered without context. It is necessary to consider how a mesh will be used and modified in the future in order to say anything true about the suitability of its topology.

There are no hard rules when it comes to topology. Some people will say n-gons (polygons with more than 4 sides) are always bad. Some will say triangles are always bad. Some will say that non-manifold geometry is always bad, or that meshes with holes in them are always bad.

None of these are true, because mesh topology serves a purpose, or multiple purposes. It is not a goal in and of itself. If the purpose(s) is/are served by some particular topology, then that topology is good, whether or not it is itself aesthetically and technically appealing.

Often users are advised to avoid triangles or ngons when building topology--to keep to quads. This is good practice, because quads are easier to work with, easier to edit, easier to create UV projections for, they subdivide more predictably, and, most importantly, easier to produce aesthetically appealing deformations from.

However. If a mesh will not need to deform, then there is far less pressure to keep to quads. If the mesh will not be subdivided, even less. If the shape is well-represented by the topology, and it either already has a good UV projection or will not be needing one, then quads and ngons don't matter, unless the mesh will be altered in the future.

It is much harder to modify a mesh which isn't quads than one which is. Especially if you want to alter topology. However, altering shape, to a small extent, usually is not sensitive to topology. It's also generally easier to do UV projection and alteration of quad topology than triangle/ngon topology.

It is still important to point out that having SOME non-quad (especially triangles) in your deforming, high performance mesh which may be altered and have UVs applied, is still just fine in many circumstances. If the trangle won't interfere with these things--then it DOES NOT MATTER and you should spend time on other things. Same with n-gons, although those have a higher chance of causing technical issues.

Regarding non-manifold geometry: it is generally a bad thing. Many, MANY operations and programs will not function correctly when passed non-manifold meshes. However, if your mesh is serving all your purposes, and you don't see those purposes changing, then non-manifold geometry doesn't matter. The circumstances where this might be true, however, are extremely rare, and it is best to avoid it.

Regarding holes in the mesh: again, context matters. Some advanced simulation or mesh operations require "watertight" meshes. Most don't, and it doesn't matter. Context and circumstance will dictate what's appropriate.

Mesh weight matters, as well. There's generally not much call for more geometric detail than your mesh needs to create the shapes you need, either statically or deformed, and it is best to keep poly counts as low as possible while not compromising on these things. However, this must be balanced with the effort it requires to reduce detail. If you have a poly budget of 100k triangles for an object, and it's 50k but a lot of those are not necessary, it's still not worth the time to reduce it further. People hours are worth more than computer hours.

Where topology really starts to matter a lot is in efficient hard surface modeling, especially where the asset will be subdivided. Not having your edge flows follow surface details will make life difficult, and having too much mesh detail will make modification increasingly difficult.

The point here is that every situation is different, and no real determination of acceptable mesh topology can be made without all this context. If you look at an image of a mesh and don't know anything about what it will be used for or how it might be modified, you can't say anything true about the quality of topology. These and other questions must have answers, in order to judge *overall* topology:

  1. Will it deform?
  2. If so, how?
  3. Will it need to be edited in the future?
  4. If so, how?
  5. Will it be subdivided?
  6. Does it have or will it need a UV projection?
  7. Will the UVs need to change?
  8. If so, how?
  9. Will it need to be exported into another application?
  10. Will it be used in any type of simulation?
  11. Does it meet performance (budget) requirements?

These questions must have answers in order to come up with useful conclusions about how good the topology is or is not. And again, there are no hard rules. Topology is not a goal, it is a tool to help reach other goals. If a triangle doesn't affect those goals, there's no point spending energy removing it.

This thread will be a clearinghouse for information about topology, both in general, and specific to Maya. It will be heavily curated and updated as I encounter more/better information on the subject.

Eventually it will be turned into another wiki and be the redirect for the majority of topology threads we get here, in order to avoid repetition.

So i assigned different shaders using Material Manager to objects.Same material objects have same assigned shader and they are combined .Is this the right workflow for substance painter or do yall organize same material objects by udims? (for example UDIM 1001-UDIM1002 ETC has objects's uvs that share the same material type aka wood and then u assign one shader for each different material)OR I MIGHT speaking some bullshit here .Im kidna confused with oraginizing cuz the way i did it seems messyyy.I have one million godzilion textures list now lmao.

Finally in a spot where it's good enough that I can start working on my own groom project with it. Smooth collision, instancing, fur shader improvements, crazy new wrap style groom transfer, nifty lil reference viewer for matching up reference photos with the model, and a ton more!

Again, this is a work in progress, so expect things to change and improve as I get feedback and work on my own project.

Plugin [Work in progress] A plugin for Maya 2025 that allows you to import XPS / XNALara models.

So I've started to work on an XPS importer for Maya, since I work with these models a lot, and I was tired of having to import them into Blender, then export them to FBX, and then import them to Maya, where I would have to fix materials manually. This plugin is made to fix this irritating workflow. This is still work in progress and for now the plugin can only import raw geometry and normals, but new features are already being implemented (currently I want to get UV maps to work). If you are interested, you can check the project here: https://github.com/Nova-Europa-Software/Maya-XPS-Importer (I don't know if this matters to you, but the project isn't vibecoded).

This one was a challenge, all these multiple points of contact points and interactions were tough to carve out and then adjust as the project went on.

It's been a stressful few months, I've been head down with a contract. Creature workshop and working on moving my portfolio away from a single entity to specific Creature, Gameplay and cinematic showreels.

Fast Rigging – New 4-Arm Character Mode

We've just released a new 4-arm character mode for Fast Rigging!

This mode allows you to rig characters with four arms using a simple guide setup. The tool automatically generates the full rig, including skin weights and controls, without requiring manual weight painting.

We're continuing to improve the tool and expand support for different character types.

For the next mode, we're thinking about either 6-armed characters or centaurs. Which one would you prefer?

Hi, I'm asking for help since this is my first time installing the program and I need it for university.

I'm attaching the screenshot I get on my Mac. I've already tried restarting my PC, installing Rosetta 2, redownloading the .DMG, and clearing the cache, but it still gives me the same error.

I've done it several times but it always gives the same error.

I hope you can help me because I don't have much time...

Neither of them is in the Skin Cage layer, and the one deformed by the SkinCurves is not the same one I can move using the rig. It was fine before i added the hair.

Question How to render with flat lighting, without changing the texure?

I want the render to look like this, all flat and nice (which the viewport lets me see easily for some reason TT)

Hellooo, so I've been wanting to try a new shading technique I've just learned with an old file I made, but for that I would need a flat light pass with the bare colours, and another pass with a single sharp light.

I've been searching many tutorials but they all mention to change the color output by making a new material, but I think it would be a pain to change all my textures and then go back and change them again for the other pass which actually is affected by light.
I'm currently working with an aiStandardsurface as base.

Is there a way to change this in the rendering settings or maybe even a script?

MASH Issue with MASH - Instances Appear Far Outside the Target Plane

I've been trying for the past day to use MASH to make a Chinese roof. It didn't work for some reason, so I've been troubleshooting a lot. The tile I want on the plane won't stay on the plane surface, but it goes way off the grid. I think I fixed it a bit, but now it's slightly offset from my plane. I can't understand why it wouldn't work; I reset and froze transformations, and also deleted history. I also already checked, and my Maya version is in centimetres.

I honestly don't know what else to try.

Question Help with shooting gallery simulation

I have to do a kind of shooting gallery simulation using Mash and Maya Dynamics. I made one with MASH (Random, Dynamics, Offset, Distribute, etc.). This is how it's looking so far, but how can I make the arrows stick into the targets and not falling down?

I tried increasing the friction, and it works on the floor, but not on the targets or the walls. What can I do to improve this?

This was my midterm project that I had 5 weeks to do but decided to cobble together in about 17 hours. I made some Shinkansen rolling stock, In order: E5 Series, 0 Series, 500 Series. The project asked for three models one animated and 3 renders of each. I started working with Maya this semester and am still fairly new to 3D so they are rough, but I'm still proud of them. Any tips would be welcome (as long as they aren't too mean).

Plugin extrudX for Maya, extrude/offset without overlap faces

Maya extrudeX v1.0
https://youtu.be/n41ZJ96CyaQ

I'm working to improve the extrude tool and reduce overlapping faces when extruding edges.

Testing it with all kinds of geometry, from flat surfaces to curved shapes, including messy meshes and tricky corners, to see how well it handles different situations.

The algorithm has limits, and finding the right balance across cases is always a challenge. Still, I'd love to see more people try it out and share their feedback!

Animation rmGimbalMonitor - real-time gimbal lock monitoring tool for animators

Hello everyone! I’d like to share my first tool - rmGimbalMonitor.

It monitors how close character controls are to gimbal lock in real time and shows the result directly in a table with color-coded progress bars.

At the moment, it includes Biped and Quadruped presets, but the setup is fully customizable. You can edit control categories, change which controls are monitored, add skip rules, and assign custom category icons.

The tool is completely free and available on GitHub. The repository also includes installation instructions, compatibility information, known issues, and the development roadmap.

Animation Help—How do I make the wheel spin on its own?

Thumbnail
gallery
13 Upvotes

I have been trying to figure this out for hours. I have searched the internet, YouTube, and even sadly resorted to AI to attempt to tell me what's wrong in making this wheel work, but I just can't get it. I have tried using the Expression Editor and a few other things. I want the wheel to move automatically instead of having to painstakingly animate it myself when it comes time. A lot of people are saying to have the meshes and NURBS parented together, but with the tutorial I followed to make this control rig, it hasn't been possible thus far. I have provided images of my outliner and an image of the wheel/rig to give better context. The green wheel on the outside is my global controller that I want to move and have the wheel rotate with. The yellow Wheel_Base, blue is Wheel_Frame (Rim/arm), and red is the wheels themselves (CTRL_Wheel). I am still fairly new to Maya, and this is my first time rigging anything, so please go easy on me in the comments.
