Sparks of Hope 100% No Damage Tier List (Characters and Sparks)
I decided to replay Sparks of Hope for the first time this summer and wanted to challenge myself to make the game more interesting strategy-wise. So I settled to complete every single battle (including side quests) in base game, The Last Spark Hunter and the Rayman DLC on normal difficulty without losing a single HP. And I am happy to say, the challenge was successful! I saw that some of y'all have been discussing tiers recently so I thought I would contribute with what I learnt in that journey, if some mad lad ever wants to attempt this on hard difficulty or if you simply want to get better at the game.
I am not trying this on Kingdom Battle since you actually have to take some damage to complete the game at 100%, either by Rabbid Kong, bosses equipped with the Rocket or by the Sherbet Smashers you have to bait to bounce you to some areas you must reach. The smaller maps and the RNG would make it hell anyway.
General advice
Now, your gameplay changes a little bit since you cannot take any damage. What Edge said about being toast if you rush Daphne blindly... applies to most of the battles you cannot complete in one turn (which you should try first!). Many of your first turns are gonna be spent by positioning yourself nicely to better attack on the second turn and cleaning your surroundings from anything that can hurt you. You do less but you do it better. The battle where you find yourself fighting some Lone Wolves to unlock Ethering or the giant enemy boss fights are a good exemple of this. You also skip a lot more turns to get enemies to come closer, making them more vulnerable when you eventually decide to attack. That also helps with the cooldown on your Sparks and Techniques.
Investing in your movement skill tree early is almost always a good choice. This will allow you to get more things done on your first turn. Exhaust, Team Barrier, Steely Stare and Ennui are also nice to upgrade early, and weapons can wait. The HP branch on the left is also useless so you can fortunately spare some skill prisms on that.
Even if I sometimes reset a few times to explore the ways to make the most out of the first turn, most battles were nothing nightmare-ish. The biggest brain-scratchers however, were R. Luigi and R. Rosalina's duo mission on Terra Flora and Coup in Kanya's HQ, since these go against my advice and must be completed as fast as possible with little opportunities for retreat and stalling. Feel free to ask me questions about any battle.
On the characters
Note that this new tier list is mostly for middle, late-game and the Melodic Gardens as you unlock more ways to avoid damage than Team Barrier. On Beacon Beach and Pristine Peaks however... yeah you use Peach a lot. Compared to normal gameplay, there are now two things you must take into account, that explain most of the changes compared to the normal tier list: crowd management and retreat opportunities. The best characters are the ones capable to keep enemies at bay and not find themselves in awkward positions while doing so.
Because of that, S Tier Characters to avoid taking any damage are easily Luigi, Edge and Rabbid Rosalina. Steely Stare with Ghost Bullet is great for crowd management, even more so when paired with Cryobolide to stay out of range from enemies. Pair it with Vampastra, and you can slay Fieldbreakers, giant bosses and the Mecha King Bob-omb like it is nothing. And of course, a 9m landing radius after a jump is huge to advance and retreat with no worries, as well as to keep your entire team more mobile. The whole team is more mobile with Luigi.
Edge is the best character for frontline defensive maneuvers. Have her team jump off a teammate to inflict four dashes and increase your movement to either reach an area or have a way easier time getting back to cover than other characters. Pair that with Ethering and that is how you reach most areas in the game. Flying Blade and Stormblade are just nice bonuses because her movement paired with the good sparks is just THAT good. That means her gameplay does not change much from Palette Prime to the Melodic Gardens if you fully upgrade her movement branch early.
And of course, Ennui allows you to nullify or ignore many obstacles. Just like Edge, you can rush R. Rosalina to the frontline relatively safely because of the sheer amount of disruption you cause, further enhanced in the Melodic Gardens with the help of Mayhem. Everything Ennui-related is important, including the dash. Upgrade these parts of her skill tree first.
A tier - Rabbid Mario is lowered a tier from the standard gameplay because of how much jumping nerfs him for this challenge. Being the only character with no gliding or area-enhancing upgrades, he only has retreat opportunities when his huge starting movement area is available, so he cannot get TOO far. Of course, he is still great when enemies are WITHIN that area thanks to the No Limits upgrade, which you should absolutely get as soon as you have enough skill prisms.
Rabbid Luigi is great because of Exhaust, which can be stacked with other damage reduction sources like Exosphere, Exhaust Dash, Reflector and passive Spark abilities to reach 0% and make an enemy (or a whole bunch of them!) inoffensive for a turn. The only problem is that you cannot do this at all times, when enemies are out of range or spawning through portals. As usual he also slays Darkmess Eyes missions.
B tier - as I said, Peach is mostly useful in early game. I cannot count the number of times I started the game by immediately burning her two action points with Starburst and Team Barrier, and then have her do nothing for two turns except assist team jumps. She would be an obvious S-tier if we were only talking about Beacon Beach and Pristine Peaks, but as the game goes on, being a support character is not that great since you want all three characters to DO STUFF while ALSO not getting hit. Gun sucks too.
Mario I found mostly useful on survival missions in late game, where his crowd management abilities finally shine with upgraded Hero Sight and Cryobolide to stop anything that dares come through portals. Upgraded stomps and gliding also help immensely to reach areas and buttons. He is nice but niche in this game mode.
D tier is for characters that do NOT help us with our objective. Rabbid Peach is mostly useless here because her entire skill tree assumes we are going to lose HP... and we are not. Triple troll and three dashes alone are not enough to justify her inclusion on almost any mission. On the flip side, that means you can upgrade her full Spark tree branch really early to be a good support character if that is your thing. But again, supports are burdens in late game.
Covers are precious for us in this challenge and Bowser's whole shtick is to get rid of them. That's a no thanks for me, sir.
Commenting on some sparks
The most remarkable change in this tier list is that, like with Rabbid Peach, the two Sparks that assume you are going to lose HP have virtually no use. That means Pulser and Regenesis were not needed at all for this challenge. Which was scary since I found myself picking Regen a lot during my first playthrough. But hey, not using it also makes you better at the game.
Ethering, Glitter and Selfie remain solidly in S-tier "game changer", even more so than usual. Rabbid Mario did not use much else than these three in the Rayman DLC. Mayhem and Oozer Master are goated for crowd management and even work on bosses you cannot kill in one turn, so they WILL save your life with enemies like the Giant Flamin' Stooge and the giant gold pipe bosses.
Starburst is lowered a tier as he is not as needed in late game except for the fights that you want (and can) complete in one turn (Midnite, Phantom). Cryobolide is amazing with Steely Stare, Vampastra is the bane of enemies and bosses who are otherwise resistant to everything, especially when paired with Steely Stare. Cryodash and Vampdash are in here for the same reasons when paired with Edge. Do not sleep on Zephyrdash with Edge for crowd control, plus it's fun. Aquadash is a tier lower since it CAN hurt you if you dash at the wrong angle, forcing you to reset. All other Sparks have their moments but they are not going to be in your rotation most of the time. You'll know it when you need them. Vampgeddon and Berserk I did not use but I just assumed there were better options than these two for the purpose they serve.
That's it folks, I love this game and I am glad if this little guide helped you in any way!
