In GTA 2, one of the first gangs you encounter in the Downtown District is the "Loonies." They are, quite visibly, completely insane patients from the Sunnyside asylum who have taken control of the place. The gang’s symbol is a yellow smiley face with one eye winking. In Manhunt, the "Smileys" are a group of demented, armed inmates from the Darkwoods Penitentiary who have taken control of the asylum. Their most striking feature is the use of yellow smiley-face masks.

Looking at concept art from the early stages of Manhunt’s development, there's a variety of color palettes in the environments, vivid shades of blue, green, orange, and red. While some buildings and structures are imposing and tall, everything aligns perfectly with a grim, raw urban "20 minutes into the future" aesthetic much like the setting of GTA 2’s retro-futuristic metropolis, "Anywhere City" (especially when playing with the "Dusk" lighting setting).

Of course, while this is likely just a coincidence, with no actual connection between the titles, as they belong to distinct universes, it is interesting to note that the concept of "asylum patients who go mad, take control of the asylum, turn it into their base, and begin walking around heavily armed" was revisited by Rockstar in a later game. Perhaps the idea simply appealed to the developers enough that they decided to use it again.

I know that GTA 2 was released in 1999 and that the development of Manhunt didn't truly begin until around 2000, even so, it’s not that large a gap in time. I’m not saying that Rockstar drew inspiration from the "Loonies" to create the "Smileys," but rather that this was a concept they decided to repurpose later on in the development process since I doubt the "Smileys" existed during the game's pre-production phases.

Hi :) I‘ve been thinking a lot about what a good Manhunt 3 would look like, so I’ve come up with a protagonist: Eduardo “Eddie“ La Hoya. He’s a local young man who’s disgusted by what Mr. Nasty and his ring are doing to Duke City and its residents. This is what motivates his tracking down of Nasty (I haven’t figured out if he goes after him first or gets kidnapped) but as the game goes on, the player’s actions through Eddie will determine if you get a virtuous or rage fueled ending. Hope this was an interesting concept, lmk what you think of the design and personality :)

So this has been bothering me for years, on the bonus section that shows off the head models there's one that I've not only never seen in the game.. but have no idea what it's even supposed to be. Lower left, between the Smiley and Journalist. It kinda looks like a BDSM style mask but I can't entirely make it out, and that doesn't explain what it's doing here. What's even weirder is all the head models shown are ones in-game, no beta or unused models are shown so it really stands out

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I've always been curious about it

Hi! I’ve been thinking a lot abt the best setting for a potential manhunt 3, and I’ve landed on a southwestern city inspired by Albuquerque: Duke City! The districts shown here are Downtown Duke, the War Zone, Duke City Intl Air, Penalosa, and North Valley, all based on real ABQ neighborhoods! Also featured is the DC RIDE bus, based on the ABQ RIDE bus, and some real life businesses from the city (like tewa lodge) thrown in! This took forEVER, but I think it paid off! Hope you all enjoy it!
