Question/Discussion I built a free kendama tricks encyclopedia app — track your progress, browse hundreds of tricks, and find players worldwide

Hey r/Kendama!

I've been playing kendama for a while and always felt like there was no good centralized resource to learn tricks in a structured way — so I built one.

Kendamapedia is a free web app that lets you:

  • Browse hundreds of tricks organized by category and difficulty
  • Track your progress as you land new tricks
  • Discover kendama players worldwide

It's completely free, works in your browser, and you can sign in with Google to save your progress across devices.

Link: kendamapedia-ae79d.web.app

I'd love any feedback — something that feels off, or features you'd want to see. This is a passion project and I want it to be genuinely useful for the community.

Happy to answer any questions!

Question/Discussion What Kendama to get?

Ive been a sweets player my whole kendama career and ive never looked back, but now that ive bought a “Blackjack” Retro Anti skid 2.0 i feel a but ripped off. It cost 70$ and the anti skid was good for a day. Obviously it dropped a couple of times and the grip is awaful, the “Broken shape” doesent even let the tama fit fully on the spike.
Any reccomendations on what to build? ive looked at Okendama Revo clear tamas but idk what Ken to get. im very used to sweets big cups and the ken build.
Thanks in advance.

Clip Border balance!

This is a trick that felt impossible to me 13 years ago, and when I returned to playing kendama 2 months ago, it still felt that way. 3 days ago I looked at my Kusa Jet shape and thought “that tip is definitely squashed enough to try.” Now I have a new favorite trick!

Hi , @soshinkendama here again with another post. Made some revisions to the cross body bag idea and this is where I’m landing. Could I get the communities opinion on design?

The scale of the bag is modeled after a “5 foot 8in male 180lbs”

Thanks in advance everyone !

Clip After 6 years of no Kendama I re-found some joy

I got into Kendama about 6 years ago whist living in the Netherlands after seeing some people playing all together, seemed like a cool and easy going community. I bought a sweets Kendama but can’t remember the model name, it’s been collecting dust and hasn’t aged well. I cleaned the outer glue layer off which took a while but it’s cleaned up to use, although the bearing is pretty much finished.

I’ve had to relearn tricks but muscle memory has helped. I could never land the bird so here’s a video of me landing it for the first time the other night.

I’ve got a second hand Krom on the way which should help freshen some things up.

I’ve looked everywhere for one and am hoping to find someone on here that has one they’d be willing to sell. It’s my favorite tama I’ve seen so far. If you have one I can buy, please let me know!

Question/Discussion Kendama Cleaning / Restoration

This is how I approach cleaning and restoring my kendamas. With the new wave of players, I'm sure someone will need this. Please share your methods if they differ from mine; I'm sure there are many approaches to this!

Cleaning:

Materials:

  • Bowl of water with a drop of dishwashing soap
  • Clean Rag / Hand Towel (preferably microfiber, but any cotton rag works fine)
  • Bowl of clean water
  1. Wet a corner of the rag with the soapy bowl, then wring out until DAMP
  2. Rub the soapy, damp corner on the dirty areas until grime has transferred
    • TAMAS:
      • Rub a straight line from the string hole to the spike hole, then rotate the tama and repeat
      • Do not rub too much with chipped paint, as it can chip off further
    • KENS:
      • Separate the sarado from the ken while cleaning; start with the stall points, then the rest of the body as needed
      • Ken restoration can also be done at this point
  3. Wet another corner of the rag with clean water and wring out until DAMP
  4. Rinse off the residual soap on the tama and the ken using the new damp corner
  5. Dry everything off with a dry corner or allow to air dry

Restoration:

Materials:

  • Bowl of water
  • Paper Towels

Small dents and nicks:

  1. Fully wet a paper towel in the bowl of water
  2. Rip off small pieces and stick them on the problem areas
    1. The goal is to feed the wood some water to make it expand
      1. AKA: controlled waterlogging
  3. Let the wet paper towel sit on the dent for at least 10-15 minutes before checking on it
    1. It will not be 100% perfect, but it will restore it a good amount

Loose Sarado:

  1. Separate the sarado from the ken
  2. Wet a paper towel in the bowl of water
  3. Rip off a strip from the wet paper towel
  4. Wrap the wet strip around the indented area of the ken
    • Usually around the string hole
  5. Wring out the rest of the paper towel and shape it to fit the sarado hole
  6. Stuff the inside of the sarado with the damp paper towel
  7. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes before checking how it fits
    • Repeat steps 2-6 as necessary
    • Allowing it to sit for too long will cause the cups to sit higher or not fit at all

Side note: I only tried fixing a loose sarado after I missed a yank spike; the ken shot out and hit my knee at a funny angle. Don't wait till this happens to you lol
