Hello everyone, it is almost that time of the year everyone looks forward to! I just wanted to share a few important things. Please be sure you safeguard your PII (Personal Identifiable Information) & FTI (Federal Tax Information). Over the last several years there has been a huge increase in Fraud and Identity Theft because individuals are not safeguarding or making good judgment calls when sharing their personal information. Protecting your private information is your responsibility. That being said, solicitation for personal information will NOT be tolerated. If it is seen, it will be delt with. Also, do NOT trust someone who promises to use your info for a big tax refund. In most cases your personal information will be used with Fabricated/Fraudulent tax data.

General Question Injured Spouse Claim -- 4+ years, not resolved

Post image
3 Upvotes

This is the most frustrating situation and I'm not sure if I'm handling it the best way. I was married very briefly several years ago and for 2020, I filed our joint taxes. From the refund, there was $1832 taken to pay his taxes from 2012. I filed an injured spouse claim because we weren't married in 2012.

I never heard anything from the IRS, was never able to contact a live person to find out the status of my claim, and gave up because I had a lot of other stuff to deal with. Then when I did my taxes earlier this year, I was looking at my transcripts and noticed the line that said the claim had been received in early 2022 but as you can see, there was no refund issued.

In June, I applied for help with TAS, was assigned an advocate and he was able to get the IRS to agree to release any of this money that they determined should be mine. I had to look at the transcript to see that the IRS was planning to release all $1832 plus interest.

But then they cancelled the refund and sent a notice that I need to update my banking info. I added my banking info on my IRS account on August 21, before the notice was even sent out.

A couple of weeks ago, I got another letter from the advocate that said the IRS would be mailing a check on October 9, so he has closed my case.

I received the check last week and it's in both mine and the ex's name, even though I did not check the box on the injured spouse claim to have the refund issued in both names. I have no contact with the ex and he lives in another state. It's great that I got the check, I guess, but it's unusable.

I called and left messages for the advocate twice last week. I called and left a message for his boss. No one has called me back.

At the end of the week, I contacted my senator's office and they have contacted the TAS on my behalf. I've heard nothing so far.

Is there anything else I should do here?

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question IRS requesting original signature for 2024 return despite e-filing and receiving refund

• Upvotes

Has anyone experienced something similar?
I electronically filed my 2024 Form 1040, and my return was processed. I also received my refund.
However, I subsequently received an IRS letter stating:

“Your tax return doesn’t have original signatures. Sign and return the declaration at the end of this letter.”

The letter also says the IRS needs additional information to process my 2024 return and instructs me not to file an amended return.

I checked my IRS online account, including my transcripts, and everything appears normal. There are no outstanding balances, notices, or apparent processing issues.

Has anyone received a missing-signature request after their electronically filed return was already processed and refunded?

Could this be related to a duplicate return or an IRS processing error? If you’ve experienced this, how was it resolved?

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Due to the High Volume of Callers...we are never answering again!

My Dad got a notice saying they have not processed his refund because his account # was not provided. LIARS!!!! It is on the return, I can see it! I verified it!

Also when I submitted the taxes there was a message saying because the refund was over $10,000 they would send a letter. That was the letter they sent.

WTF I am supposed to do?! Called every day this week and "Were sorry...."

Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes First time doing a tiered plan

• Upvotes

I set up a tiered payment plan over the phone last month. They said I have till 10/29 to make my first payment. It’s around $70 a month for the first year and then about $250 a month for the years coming up after that. I’m not seeing what I owe under the “make a payment” tab for the month but instead am getting a letter reminding me what I owe for 2025. I can make a payment towards the total just fine but I dunno if that even counts towards my total. Never got an updated notice from them with directions on what to do. At I least I paid what I said, when I said I was gonna do it, but I want tangible numbers I can see my money going towards with the terms we set, not just “pay us the whole thing please”. I tried calling them back but that’s kind of a joke right now without so much as a callback option. I’m worried and don’t know where else to turn. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

General Question Anybody else get a mass mailing, or just me?

• Upvotes

Could anybody please confirm if they also recently received a clear window envelope mailing from Ogden, UT? Was it just a general mailing?

I can't open or get to it now, and it's difficult and expensive to find out what it is otherwise.

Thanks.

State Local Tax Question Military Spouse State Taxes

I’m an activity duty SVM stationed in Virginia but a legal Florida resident so I don’t pay any state taxes. My husband and I got married last year and he has lived in Virginia his whole life and always paid Virginia state taxes. Does this automatically disqualify him from filing the same state of residency as me under the MSRRA since technically he is not “solely in the state to comply with military orders” since he was a Virginia resident before we got married?

Am I dumb or doesn’t the letter from July literally state I should’ve received my return within 2-3 weeks of that date? Plot twist - I didn’t. Last month I filed form 3911. I went to check my account today and see photo 2 saying they received my amended return in July?? The third screen shot is my actual amend timeline and the fourth is my transaction sheet with dates. Can someone please explain to me what is going on and what I should do

General Question Aspiring EA looking for remote opportunity

I’m currently studying for my EA and looking to gain hands-on experience in IRS tax resolution. I’m also interested in tax preparation and planning, but I’m happy to start wherever I can learn and contribute.

I’m fortunate to have a stable full-time job outside the industry with a fairly flexible schedule. I’m available remotely after work, on weekends, and potentially during some weekday business hours.

Honestly, compensation isn’t a concern for me. I’d be more than happy to learn without pay if there’s a legally appropriate way to structure it. My main priority is gaining real experience and contributing wherever I can.

Does anyone here take on people in my position, or know a firm or practitioner who might be open to it? I’d really appreciate any leads or advice.

General Question Just a waiting game?

Filed for an extension and completed my tax return 10/06 for 25. It was accepted and has not given any issues in the past years and not a huge return this year. Federally getting back 2400, but we owe VA 2300. We selected DD federally and we would mail in the VA amount. Waiting on the refund to come in and curious if we’re gonna have to play the 60-180 day waiting game.

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Interest question on delayed return

I'm owed a 19k refund. I'm in the black hole of waiting for a manual review. Am I reading things correctly that the refund should start earning interest after 45 days? And that the rate will be 7% compounded daily? Considering I have about 100k in high interest savings accounts and short term bonds, none of which is getting more than 5.5% should I even be in a hurry? Seems like I'm getting a better rate letting them keep it for a while.

Rejoice FINALLY got our refund

We got our refund yesterday!! I've been following all the posts on here religiously to make sure any tips or tricks were followed. I had seen a few people post about contacting your representative and thought it might be too hard since we had just moved to a new state. I was so wrong. It was beyond easy. I just filled out their forms online and they took all of my information and gave it to the tax advocates. I waited a few weeks not expecting anything to happen but someone finally called me!! They had me send over a few documents that were holding the IRS up and it took less than 2 weeks for the IRS to process the refund!

I was never able to get through the IRS phone service and got very unhelpful mail telling me that my info wasn't in their system yet.

General Question Spoke to an IRS agent over the phone by selecting Spanish within 30 minutes

Thankfully, I speak Spanish fluently. After calling so many times and trying every “hack”, I called and picked the “Spanish” option. I got an agent within 30 minutes at 1:00pm and she solved all of my issues! It’s hard explaining taxes in Spanish though but so happy I finally spoke to someone.

General Question Calling the IRS

Does anyone actually know how to do get someone on the phone? I called 1-800-829-1040 and no matter what numbers or voice prompt I give it’ll never let me speak to someone. Basically I need to find out where my return is. It hasn’t come in the mail or direct deposit and I don’t even live at the house that the taxes were filed under. This is an amended return from 2023 and my accountant clicked direct deposit but I got the state return via mail so I’m thinking something happened and it’ll now come by mail.

If anyone knows a number or what I can say to the automated message to get a live person i’d appreciate knowing.

Tax Question W2 vs 1040

Hi all. Had a couple questions and I hope I’m posting in the right place. If not, please let me know and I’ll move where this would fit best. Appreciate the help and thanks in advance.

Long story short, I’m a full time hourly W2 employee who will be buying a small family owned retail store from our owners when they retire in the near future. In the interim, they’ve discussed passing a % of ownership in the business to me prior to their retiring. If this happens and I become part owner in the business, would I become self employed since I own part of the business at that point OR do I remain as a W2 employee? What other tax implications should I consider, if any, when this happens?

Rejoice Finally! Refund is coming.

I finally got the email (and my transcripts show) that my refund has been approved! The 810 freeze code was removed and the 570 additional account action has been resolved. The refund is expected next week (with interest paid!).
For those still waiting, it will happen. Just keep the faith…I got $368 paid in interest from ol’ Uncle Sam. So, just think about that as you are waiting for your money.

Tax Question FIRPTA? Am I on the hook or no?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Background
- Irish citizen , born in Ireland
- Became US citizen in 2024. So now dual citizen
- Selling $300K house
- House was in Wifes name, then was put into an irrevocable family trust name (Texas). Family trust belongs to wife and I
- at time trust was created I was a US citizen
- my name was never directly on the house, only as a custodian of the trust

Am we on the hook to pay FIRPTA tax on the sale of this property? Or does either being a US citizen or the property being in the trust, exonerate us from this?

Tax Question Tax Return

I’m an international student and work not many hours and only at my uni. Did my taxes in April but left during the summer break and received a letter requesting information about my tax treaty country (Double taxation?) in June. When I came back in August, it was 2 months overdue for the reply and did so immediately. I explained the situation and followed what they asked through an e-fax and wrote in an online pdf document. I tried to call to check, but no one answered. I called for an appointment for local tax service but no one answers because of high volume. It’s been months since I heard anything and it seems there is no one working there. How much trouble is this situation?
