Mod Announcement Owning A Hedgehog Reality Check
Since hedgehog owners consistently buy hedgehogs without setting reasonable expectations here are some expectations to set. Adapted/expanded from u/ArcadeRivalry's post.
- Don't believe social media. Every single one I see there are obviously ridiculously posed pictures, maybe it's just me but I refuse to believe one could stay still for that long.
- Hedgehog are spiked covered prey animals prone to anxiety. While belly rub/cuddle posts get a lot of attention they are the exception due to good breeding/luck not the rule. It is very possible a hedgehog will never be comfortable being handled even after concerted effort.
- If you want to bond you need to put in a lot of commitment, patience and time to socialize them. I've seen a lot of people in groups I'm in need to re-home a hog before the first year as they can't put the time in. You need at least an hour a day socializing but realistically a lot more for them to be comfortable around you and others. We recommend getting a snuggle sack or putting them in your hoodie pouch to spend time together.
- You need a specialist vet. A lot of places might not have an exotic animal vet near you. This is vital. So make sure you have to this.
- It may not be legal to own hedgehogs in your area.
- You need heating to ensure they don't hibernate.
- You will likely be spiked, bitten and pooped on. It can be really really disheartening being spiked, hissed at or even bitten when you feel like you've made progress. Huffing and popping are natural, they are scaredy little animals.
- Hedgehogs salivate frothily on themselves when they like scents, males often have "boy time", they poop a lot, have terrible sight and will bite things that smell yummy/interesting, and require consistent cage cleanings.
- They are carnivores, while feeding fruits/vegetables can often be done safely, please feed them mainly meat-based foods ( cat food, insects, etc.)
- Since they have very limited vision they operate mainly on smell and are at risk of falling/walking off elevated areas. It is wise to assume they are making decisions based on what they smell rather than just mainly what they see. They will still try to climb and are prone to hurting themselves climbing horizontal cage bars.
- It is very likely they will dislike baths and nail trimming. We recommend trimming nails during foot bath time when they can't curl up or just holes in a towel to put their legs through.
- Hedgehogs should not be housed together. High likelihood of fighting or babies.
- We recommend heavy water bowls or chicken nipple bottles as ball water bottles can hurt them.
If you know what you are getting into, they are the most wonderful creatures ever and bring many people on this sub joy. If you feel like your hedgehog "hates" you they are just being their grumpy/terrified selves! You may be lucky and form a close bond.

Question tumor found
This is NOT a request for a diagnosis!
Hello everyone, Today is a day I have long been dreading. I was cleaning my sweet girl's cage and I took a good look at her in her carrier and saw quite a large sized tumor by her hind left leg. She's about 4 1/2 years old and otherwise has never been sick. She has still been eating fine and doing all the things she normally does so I didn't notice it, plus she isn't the friendly sort so I'm not easily able to pick her up and examine her regularly for such things so I'm glad I noticed it.
Luckily, I have an exotic vet I take her to for nail trims and money isn't an issue if she needs care, thank goodness. My concern/question for all of you that have experienced tumors and surgeries is what the after care is like. Because since she isn't a fan of being picked up she balls and will certainly stay balled until I put her down. So if I have to give her something she has to be given orally in a syringe, I have no idea how on earth I am going to do that (assuming a surgery is to be had of course). Or even if it's something topical, with a possible wound there and how she likes to ball that just raised even more questions. I thought if someone could give me some info it might calm me at least a little before I can get her over to the vet (which is closed atm because it's Sunday). Thank you in advance for your help.

I bought a home for it that i'm hoping it might use in winter. I've ordered barley straw and collected leaves that are drying in she shed.
I've been leaving a small amount kitten kibble in the tunnel part that its been taking most nights but its sleeping elsewhere at the moment.
Looking for further advice of how I can help out lil critter.

Question why wonāt he trust me?
iāve been hesitating on posting this because i feel so guilty and i feel like people are going to convince me iām doing something wrong. iāve had my hedgehog stormy for 3 years now. heās 3 years old now. iāve tried everything to bond with him. heās sat by me, on me, i got one of those pouch things, i give him treats iāve tried everything you can think of to bond him with me and nothing has worked. itās just like heās never going to like him. i make sure heās comfortable and healthy and he has a very nice home and i take very good care of him. i just feel so guilty because i love him so so much and i just want him to trust me and i donāt know what iām doing wrong. is it just possible that some hedgehogs will never like their owner and never bond with them? and what can i do?

Medical/Health (see a vet) Hedgehog medical advice
I came home tonight and my hedgehog who otherwise has been completely fine, had a swollen part of his mouth where āmolarsā would be (idk what theyāre called on a hedgehog.)
I took him out of the cage, checked the cage because I didnāt know if he fell off the wheel or something and hit his face, didnāt see anything. My wife checked his mouth using a sterile Q-Tip (sheās a nurse so theyāre pre-packaged), and heās bleeding. It soaked a Qtip pretty good, and as I was holding him he was wiping blood from his mouth on my hand.
Thereās no vets in the area that see small animals and are open at 9PM, has anyone had this happen?
My first thought is: he broke a tooth and the swelling is from the trauma of the tooth. Second thought is heās got an impacted tooth thatās now bleeding and the swelling could be an infection.
I did put him back in his cage, triple checked for anything that might have hurt him. He went and started eating, drank water, and went to hide. He was running on his wheel when I came home, and he always comes to the edge of the cage to say hi and thatās how I noticed the swelling initially.
Since heās eating and drinking, the bleeding isnāt āflowingā so I feel like maybe advice on what I should do now might help.

Question Havenāt posted in a while so hereās an update lol
galleryBro got nerfed with eye proptosis over a year ago. Heās been alright but still a little asshole.
One thing Iāve been wondering is if it was a good idea to switch from bedding to dog pads. Because since then heāll only go underneath them and get them all wadded up. Iām not sure if Iād be able to train him since heās an adult and was always used to bedding. Should I just switch back?

Welcome to the Pack! Hello hedgie peeps!! š
galleryI think this is going to make this my official hedgehog community. We adopted Quilliam (i know i know probably overdone) Sunday!
Heās a wee lil guy still only about 180 grams (6weeks) I donāt think the breeder introduced the wheel yet as she told me to give it a few days to make sure he was eating. When I put it in there he didnāt seem familiar with it. He definitely used it the first two nights, but last night Iām pretty sure he slept all night. I had the stomach bug so I was up often and he was always in his hiding spot. Should I worry? Or is he just still adapting?

SPLOOT! My baby is turning 5
My baby is turning 5, I am doing my best to make her senior life as comfortable as possible. Last winter I bought a heat mat for under her sleeping bag and she loves it, sploot all day, everyday. (Yes she also has a heat lamp with her own thermostat).
To encourage her to walk I dim the lights/darken her terrarium at fixed hours and wake her up, otherwise she will just stay on the heat mat. š gotta work those old bones for osteogenesis and what not.
I have been realizing this year but also last year that this might be her last fall with me due to her old ageš it makes me incredibly sad but also incredibly motivated to keep her comfortable and healthy as possible.
