ANNOUNCEMENT Updating Rule 3

Hello /r/Dinosaurs! In the past we’ve received community feedback stating that our guidelines for what kinds of posts are and aren’t considered low effort were not clear enough, and that subreddit members were often confused or surprised at their posts being removed. To fix this confusion, we’ve overhauled Rule 3 in a way that should make our quality guidelines crystal clear. You can find the updated guidelines here:

TLDR; Certain types of memes which are considered low-effort are banned, and most post types will now be required to have body text. We will be using Automoderator to enforce body text requirements.

If you have any feedback, please feel free to share it by leaving a comment. Otherwise, happy posting!

DISCUSSION 3D Monster Maze Remake?

Thumbnail
gallery
315 Upvotes

This was just a fun idea I had a couple days ago. I know it probably won't happen, but what if there was a remake of 3D Monster Maze.

Basically it was this old game from the early 80's that had you running through a maze from a T. rex. It was rendered in using low resolution images of the player's POV, and is considered as the first horror game.

Now imagine if we got a full blown 3D remake; but this time with next gen graphics, and a lot more brutality. Not only that, but the T. rex isn't the only thing that's after you.

I was thinking it would be like a mix between Amnesia and 1916 - Der unbekannte Krieg

All of the artwork I created was done in Adobe Illustrator and the animation work was done in After Effects! Additional artwork used in this video was done by a group of talented fellow paleoartists, as part of my commitment to remaining AI slop free!

MOVIES/SERIES/SHOWS Dead Sound’s Dinosauria tier list

Post image
6 Upvotes

Now I just wanna say that I don’t think there’s a single “bad” episode of Dinosauria. I love all of them for different reasons, which is why the lowest tier there is here is C tier. Because at worst, they’re simple, effective stories that aren’t revolutionary or anything. But at their best, they’re some of the best pieces of paleo media to ever exist.

Quick one sentence opinion on all episodes:

Old Buck 8/10: Very unique and very awesome way to start the series

Our Frozen Past 8.5/10: I always love dinosaurs depicted in colder environments

A More Ancient Spring 8.5/10: Beautiful color palette and a beautiful story with some beautiful looking hadrosaurs

Sea And Sky 7.5/10: Definitely the weakest episode but still a really interesting story and great color scheme

The Last Tyrant 10/10: Arguably the best depiction of the KPG extinction event in all paleo media

Terrible Lizard 9/10: A very different and cool start to season 2 and I love it

Hunted By Moonlight 10/10: My personal favorite episode of not just season 2 so far, but the entire series

Monsters Down Under 9.5/10: An absolutely brilliant way of making marine reptiles interesting

Great Maia 10/10: Epic, heartbreaking, awesome, and just everything the Dinosauria series represents

I’ll update this list once Fighting Dinosaurs and Two Titans come out…in 2030…

DISCUSSION "Oh, it's smaller than I thought" she said...

...When she first saw the T Rex skeleton at the American Museum of Natural History. And she isn't alone, I've heard this remarked by several people when they see it. Which brings up an observation I've made about the general public's perception and expectation of dinosaurs, especially theropods: they always expect them to be BIGGER than they actually were.

This is mostly attributed to movies of course. Jurassic Park, as great of a film it was, depicts the T Rex as being a gigantic creature much taller and longer than it was in real life. Same for the movies that followed, all the theropods are supersized, while simultaneously reduced to movie monster status. So now that's what people are expecting when they go to see a skeleton display.

They're also not acknowledging the fact that a skeleton obviously is just that. It has no meat, and doesn't convey the sheer mass and bulk that a living animal would have. Most people still have the shrink-wrapped dinosaur depiction in mind, and the skeleton creates an optical illusion of a smaller animal.

DISCUSSION Why are species named after their genus the biggest of those genuses

I don't know that much but from what I know, somehow T. rex, Spinosaurus, Ankylosaurus, and Pachycephalosaurus for example are the biggest known species of their genera.

How is it that the one that's named such is the biggest? Is it that somehow, every other similar species discovered later grouped into a genus named after the same species will be smaller, or that other same genus species discovered earlier than the "flagship" species are labeled under different genera, then when something bigger comes up that one becomes the "flagship" species?
